well mainly, you need more fuel in boost, but there is more than one way to skin a cat, and I am too lazy right now to tell you what all is involved, but it can be summed up as two different methods. The first method (and most crude, but at a lower cost) involves raising the fuel pressure under boost. The second method uses large injectors at stock fuel pressure. The first method is cheaper to implement, but in most applications is much less accurate than the second. The second method requires electronics in order to tune it, but is far more accurate and as an added bonus, the stock fuel pump is up the the job to a certain point at stock fuel pressures (like 275ish hp?)

I'll bet the OP doesn't realize he needs a manifold to add a turbo. Doesn't sound like it.

It's worth it if you already have the turbo cheap and are doing a JGS manifold or building a DIY manifold. WRX turbos are cheap. STI turbos aren't that expensive either. Around $400 and 16Gish in size.

I've driven both a 1.6, and a 1.8 with a stock wrx turbo.... it works great with the miata motor. Spools nice, and then seems to pull nicely to redline. Lowish boost though, probably around 8psi. But you can then do the "scooby" upgrades... so go to a VF-34, or one of the STi turbos. Lots of choice.

turbo, manifold, downpipe, charge pipe (can usually use stock x-over pipe if not using intercooler kit) piggy back ECU, injectors, water lines, oil lines, heat protective material, bov, boost gauge, possibly fuel pump, any other guages and mounting devices you might see fit, clutch. I could get into the nit-picky things like hardware, clamps, silicone couplers, etc, but I won't right now, this'll give you a good enough basic idea. but don't ignore that stuff when considering a turbo build, that hardware/small stuff can up the price anywhere from $50-$200.
getting the turbo was a decent start, but its only about $300 of around the$1000-2000 you'd have to spend on the whole system.
