Mufflers

we have welded up some of the summit 2.5" turbo mufflers and had some really good responses out of them. We went from having the stock system with basically a bell series 2 and a stock exhaust system to that and there was a huge difference in spool and power. if i were you and in a budget i would defeinately go with the summit muffler. It may wear out faster, but you can replace it for so cheap.

If I have a Summit Racing Turbo Muffler on my Altima, and it's not any louder than stock, then it's not a good turbo muffler.
a "turbo" muffler usually has 2 or 3 resonated tubes the airflow has to pass through...
a real turbo muffler will be straight through (inlet to outlet)...
If you're going to do a "turbo" muffler, the dynomax looks to be the least restrictive:

+1 on what Gompers and others have said. Magnaflow spiral metallic cat, resonator, and a straight-through muffler (big, like the stock one), 2.5" all through, and my exhaust is quiet, not much louder than stock. No droning on the highway, not ricey at all. Mellow, even sound. And according to the comparisons on the spool thread my GT2560 spools just fine with a 2.5" system.

What I'm most curious about regarding the muffler is just how much does a regular say, magnaflow oor whatnot aftermarket muffler that has chambers in it effect power output/spool etc. on a boosted miata vs. one of the straight throughs?
I've got the generic magnaflow upgrade muffler, and I plan to keep the high flow cat I have but am considering chopping the muffler off and welding in a straight through 'tuner' muffler - I'm thinking it wouldn't have any rasp as there would still be a cat.

Question: just how restrictive is the stock muffler? I've got the exhaust off as I'm turboing the car. I know you guys say the turbo will make it quieter, but straight open is too loud for me. So it's either buy a $30 summit turbo muffler and install that or put the stock muffler back on. I mean seriously, is the stock muffler that restrictive on a turbo car at ~250whp? I'm afraid even a 3" turbo muffler will still be too loud, hence the stock muffler idea. Just wondering if it would cost me 20whp or 50.
And the 3inch exhaust has a fart can. It will shake the paint off the walls!
I would bolt the turbo up. It will change everything. Then you can decide before spending $$$$.

I've got a 3" cheapie turbo style muffler on now (like the center/offset brainy posted) with a 200 cell metal cat and 18" glass pack. I hope to be installing the king kong magnaflow over the holiday and will report back with some spool plots.
I went with the offset magnaflow thinking it would give me some more room to make the turn at the diff to muff area. But after looking at Pat's photo, I might try and see if I can cram it in diagonally.
My cheapie muff has about 2yrs (2000 miles) on it and it's already twice as loud as when installed. I think the short trips has kept the moisture from cooking off internally and it's already eating up the inside. Stainless will fair much better.
I'll back up the claim that the chambered (flowmaster etc.) muffs suck for turbos. I went from a chambered to the cheapie turbo and spooled 200-300 rpm sooner across the rpm band.

pat says it's the 22" one. perhaps the NB has different under-*** features? In either case, get a spare 90 and 180 as tight a radius as possible and a flange/v-band so you can get it on and off easy and you can do it my way or his--whichever works best.

As it stands right now I've got a 3bolt flanged junction right at the diff/subframe with my current setup and my hopes were to set somthing up that would bolt to that. Of course if it looks like I could go more diagonal with the 22" at the price of cutting up the existing junction I would. But looking at the brainy photo, I can't see how it's possible. That's an 18" can and it's tight on both ends. As it stands now, the magnaflow should show HUGE flow improvement over my current muffler. So the additional bends won't hurt so much.
Based on the photo below, I'm skeptical that Pat's is actually the 22" can. It looks very similar to the 18" (12259) photo above when compared to Y8's (and Jason's) install.

Not to thread jack. But Diy funds are being watch by the little lady. LOL
My 3inch exhaust is straight pipe with a fart can on the back. I thought I would install the round 22inch 3inch straight through magnaflow muffler, instead of a resonator. And leave the fart can. Or do you think it would burn the packing out?

Basically you hurt some spool time and hp with a smaller than 2 1/2 exhaust. And your Cat needs to be a 200 or 300 cell count, and your muffer needs to be straight through.
3" is the best power, but for my dd I wish I would of kept my 2 1/2.
That price I think you can get flying miata or begi.
I would start a post in meet and greet post.
And look under the DIY section and read the "all your questions in one" stickey.
Good Luck!
