Hello all. I was doing some searching around about these turbos since i just saw them yesterday. They seem to be a great idea using variable exhaust speed to spin the turbo faster. I see that they are derived from diesel tech. I was searching on this form for more info in a miata application but surprisingly it came up with less than 10 threads on them. At that the only thing that came up was begis aerocharger that people are saying failed horribly after 6psi. On paper they look to be the ideal turbo to use. Self contained, and self monitoring to a point. Although i would like to have an EBC on it just to keep things from getting to wild.
I wanted to know if any one has had experience with the new aerochargers that came out with the new material to handle the higher egt. But from what ive read that was the main problem. It just that the would no longer produce boost. Another question i wanted to see an answer to was why? I did see somewhere about carbon build up but if i keep regular maintance that shouldnt be a problem.
I was hoping to purchase a 66 series so that i would have the power i would ever want. Even though the turbo is a little pricey. But hey if it gets me the spool of a small gt2554 with the top end of a gt3xxx then I dont see why more people use them. Which is why i am here to find out.
Also since it has its own oil supply. that mean i wouldnt have to drill lines to my oil supply right? Just monitor oil levels in the turbo.

if there were indeed turbo's with the spool of a 2554 and topend flow of a 30r+ we'd all be running them.
go check out the dyno sheet section of the media forum. I believe just recently a guy dyno'd somewhere around 200/200 with one of those. spool looked instantaneous, not a whole lot of topend though. I do believe he was switching to a bigger "normal" turbo due to reliability issues with his current one and wanting more topend.

But why didnt they is what im looking for. I already see one aspect showing up lol.

If you are really hard up for a VNT turbo, look around at holsets. I have a friend that ran some sort of freakishly large hx30/35 family turbo with VNT on his 2.2l mx6 (seriously, JayL looked at it and went 'holy ****, that is a huge turbo'). He was always super happy with its manners on the street.

I think it was something about not being able to handle high egts. Do some searching over at miata.net and read up on them. I've seen a few, none seemed to ever live over 10psi.
Corkey used to sell them, I'm sure he's seen more dead aerodynes than anyone else, maybe give BEGI a call.

Now if these things are dying after 10psi that got to be some sort of design flaw right? it it because the moving "vanes" just explode lol?
Also rotrex is a nice idea but id rather stay turbo than having parasitic lost on the engine. Since i like to us A/c and thats already detrimental on a stock enigne lol

There are some big engineering changes in the big diesel turbo world that will be trickling down to the gasoline aftermarket in another few years but they won't be inexpensive and therefore probably won't be getting much attention from most of us.
I want reliable and cheap. It doesn't need to defy gravity to get my attention.

When you talk to Corky you need to distinguish which generation Aerochargers are being discussed. e.g. "our last few 'chargers sold failed back in xxx and were built in xxx, which make them the xxx generation, long before this new crop of designs came out to address the EGT issues".

Since i dont want to make a new thread about this. But would this type of turbo help make more torque and horse power sooner? Ive been looking through the dyno charts and im seeing that our engines barley make it over 100lbft of torque at 3000 rpm.
still couldnt find the dyno plot on one of these. All i have to go by is whats on the aerocharger site.
