I thought this post was kinda funny -

I've dynoed all of them--one has valve pockets machined and some porting work, close to the seat where it matters-- but ,they all dyno out well, I even made a special plate so I could isolate leak down, they seal perfectly even after many long track days where I routinely, turn 7600, and the work stands up; the car is fast! The labor cost on these heads has never exceeded $300, and I'm a retail customer!!
Find a shop with modern CNC stuff, and don't get hustled. I've been doing this stuff a long time, and I've done most of it myself- I know how much it should cost!
On the other hand, if you guys are talking flowing every port to the absolute max, you're wasting time and money.
Oh yeah, After the head has been disasembled it takes about 5 minutes to replace seals.

Hobie has become -
HOBIE - "DEFENDER OF THE HIGH PRICE SPONSORS"
It's almost like he gets a kick back from making sure that everyone buys from the sponsors.
I have observed this phenomenon quite a bit with him lately. He must be getting discounts from them........

Seriously, check your attitude. You've been warned.

FM doesn't even do their own ******* head work, they farm it out to a local machine shop just like we all would do. All these ------ interweb shops are the same. They don't want you to know you can take your head to virtually any machine shop and have it rebuilt for $150 as long as the guides and valves are good.

i have heared many versions of this story, i dont know which one is the real idiot that started it all with his ingenious idea, so far the search on m.net returns nothing, so it may be another forum that hosts this bright individual

Good. I'm not going to be the one to pull the trigger though. I just don't care enough. Also, they may have agreements with FM that they charge the same amount if people try and go direct. When I said someone charges $150 for what FM charges $500 for I wasn't speaking of that specific machine shop, I don't know what they charge. But I do know that when a lot of places were charging $500 for a DSM head (very, very similar to the Miata's) that a local shop to me was charging $150. This was for a thorough disassembly, inspecting, cleaning and valve job. Nothing fancy but as good as an OEM head provided the valves and guides were good. They said they always tried to find used stock valves for free when people needed them and that a guide job was about $90.
