Thanks, no real mystery, just plumbing a dw300 and boost reference regulator. I will post some progress soon.

 

Drilled pan for turbo drain and oil temp.

 

Haven't been this excited since a turbo showed up on my doorstep:

 

Got my bungs welded in. Hoping my oil temp sensor isn't too high. I mistakenly drilled the oil drain for the OD of the bung instead of the ID. Welder was none too impressed, but he made do. Very low pro, but a little **** eyed.

Like most of the car, it looks decent from several feet away.

 

I has oil pump. Time to start putting the motor together. I'm kind of dreading the 1/2 moon gaskets on the oil pan. I think I'll RTV them in in stages: seal them to the block first, and just pin them in place with the pan, and then once they dry up, seal the pan in. Last time I did a pan, I fought the 1/2 moon gaskets pretty hard.

 

As I recall, I just smothered them with the locktite grey stuff that was on my gloves after carefully smearing it on the oil baffle plate. I stuck them in place and put the oil pan on top then proceeded with the fasteners, my motor doesn't leak a drop. What kind of trouble did you have with them?

 

Last time I had permatex ultra black on both sides of the half moon gaskets when I torqued down the pan, and they got squeezed out. That's why I'm thinking of doing it in stages, so one side is already bonded.

I have a 7 month old kid now, so I'm mostly doing this build & swap after everyone goes to sleep... apparently including me. Sleep deprivation is a thing. I've made just about every mistake I could. Thus far I have:

1) Torn the speedo cable while pulling the old motor
2) Realized I forgot the head locating dowel pins after torqueing down the head
3) Realized I forgot the oil pump/pickup gasket after sealing the pan
4) Realized I forgot the bell housing plate end after installing the flywheel and clutch
5) Realized I forgot the front lower dust/timing cover after installing the crank pulley (ok, ok, I always forget this one)

What will be next???

 

There's something to be said about realizing these things before you start the motor. I've done a couple after the fact.

Dude. With an infant, this project is crawling. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll have it started this weekend.

I need to button up the last of the install (IC pipes, drive shaft, shifter, oil temp gauge, wire open wastegate, install heat shield, mount coils, etc.). I also need to do the driver's front suspension bronze bushings, new brake lines on all 4 corners, fluids, and an alignment check.

 

Didn't get finished over the weekend. Here's the remaining work:
replace rear brake lines
Install under tray
Install hood
Wire in oil temp sensor
Install shifter
Fluids
Final alignment check
Summer wheels/tires

I Have a hard deadline by Thursday night, because I have to move the car out of the shop for construction scheduled on Friday.

 

If you install the undertray before the first start and leak check I 100% guarantee it will leak and you will hate yourself.

Ok. Weight on wheels. Need to calibrate O2 sensor, prime oil pump, install coil bracket and spark plugs, drain out old gas, and double check alignment.
