Is stock MSM rad any different? Never heard of anyone swapping one of those in. Mine appears to be quite new/good condition. Haven't had overheating issues yet, but I have also not driven it super hard, and moar cooling never hurts.

Mishimoto rad sounds very enticing. Why do you have a spare one again, did one not end up fitting right or something? I thought I remember you talking about some rad install issues, but I can't remember exactly, or I'm thinking of someone else.

You have google talk or anything?

FM claims the msm one is better, having trouble finding the link right now, but I actually have an email from Brandon telling me, the mishimoto may not be that much of an upgrade over my stocker. But I found a good deal, so I went ahead anyway.

The mishi one did have 2 fitment issues. The first, one of the fan shroud mounts had a stud broken in it when I got it, I tried to extract it, and broke a bolt extractor in it. The other, one of the fan mounts was off by like a quarter of an inch. Other than that, it's fine, doesn't leak, and has drain plug and rad cap, though I've been told the rad cap is worth replacing. You may need slim fans to fit this one in though, depending on how you routed IC pipes, and how much clearance you've got, its pretty beefy.

We are big fans of the Mishimoto products here, I would say go for it!

^I got so much mishimoto stuff, someone at a meet asked if I was sponsored... I always answer yes when ppl ask dumb questions about my car :)

aaronc7 12-27-2011 08:08 PM

cool. I really don't feel like messing with anything at the moment (car is running well for once, nothing to really work on, lol). When I build the motor I'll go ahead and do radiator then.

Smurf... got a few more questions for ya, but I'll prob take that rad from you. I'll look for you in SF shout. Rad should fit, but I'll definitely need slim fans..biggest issue is clearance with front sway bar.

Well, blew up the transmission today. Knew I was on borrowed time with the 5 speed. 2nd gear WOT pull it just exploded. Other gears 'worked' but you could hear metal rolling around in there lol. I took a video for shits and giggles, I'll post up destruction pics when I get it out.

Guess this means I probably won't drive it until I pull motor to do engine rebuild. Supertech 8.6 pistons, bore over to get 1.9L, Eagle rods, OPG, etc. etc. Kinda undecided on head work. Might try to go in there with a grinder myself for some mild work.

I let off the clutch pedal about halfway thru the video...wait for it...

It's got a nice beat to it LOL.

well.... it runs. been busy with the holidays and getting ready for deployment, but i got it to the point where I can start and drive it at least. So now it's stored at home until i get back!!

Some issues I'm having that I did not have with the car pre turbo (I was running MS pre turbo)... Coolant temp is stuck at 180. The car dashboard (by speedo) is reading temp just fine, but MS is having an issue reading it. Same for AFR...my XD16 gauge just shows "---" which means its getting no signal from the LC-1, and looks like MS might not be seeing the reading at all either. My fuel table was good before I did all this, so I just ran open loop and drove it about 2 miles home it was fine... but I probably just need to pull apart the ECU and check connections it sounds like? Other than that all was great, started up pretty easy, no leaks, etc etc.

At the Auto Hobby shop on Hurlburt, I do miss that place :-(

Well, engine is tore down. Just need to make final decision on which compression ratio pistons I want, and engine bearings, and I'll be purchasing all the parts and hopefully getting it all together here soon.

130k miles on motor. Some of the rod bearings were a bit questionable, possible spun rod bearing not too far down the road he thought. One of the intake shims was crooked, not really sure how that happened, if it had been rebuilt before incorrectly or loose spring was just letting it jump around.

But big picture crank and everything is good to go for rebuild.

As for bearings... I feel ACL Race series may be a bit too hard for my use, and wear too easily and quickly. Want something stronger than oem or oem equivalent, trying to pick something that's a good middle ground.

As for compression ratio, choices are 8.6, 9, or 9.5. Was thinking 9.0 as a good middle ground/all around build. But my new intake cam will lower my dynamic compression ratio, so I might bump it up to 9.5 to make up the difference. Thoughts?

8.6 pistons it is. now just to finalize bearings. anyone have experience with ACL Duraglide? no homo
