Ive heard that it gets too hot too fast. And thats unfortunate because I track the car. So Amsiol it is.

Yeah, that was my experience. I went to Amsoil and it was consistent, but nowhere near as nice to drive on the street as the ford fluid. If I ever went back to a 6 speed, I would install a pump and trans cooler and try the ford fluid again, it made that big a difference for me.

icantlearn 05-28-2017 11:18 PM

jeez. I might just try it out just to see what its like. Actually thats a bad idea, because then I would want to run it all the time. And I can't do that.

thumpetto007 05-28-2017 11:25 PM

I've tried all amsoil, all ford motorcraft, i think 50/50 mix, and I'm currently using all ford motorcraft with the roush synchros, oem shifter with 5x brass bushing. Shifted like shit on all combinations. This is compared to every other car I've ever driven, but I haven't driven another 6 speed miata. I LOVEd the s2000 shifter, and my 2.5rs 5 speed with basic shift kit from turn in concepts, i think.

icantlearn 05-28-2017 11:27 PM

you should have felt my stock 94 e36 shifter. If you hate the 6spd shifter, that thing would have given you aids.

18psi 05-29-2017 12:25 AM

Let me clarify his issue with the truth:

his OEM 6 speed was COMPLETELY FINE, and felt just like any other miata 6 speed I've ever driven in my life.

he hated it, because for some reason he expected a flawless, s2000 feeling shifter/transmission out of an economy sports car.

I told him it was fine.

He still wasted a METRIC TON of money to rebuild it, using parts I've never heard of before used on a miata.

it came back, after spending what, 2 grand, feeling much worse than it did originally.

to re-cap:

1)if it aint broke, don't fix it.

aidandj 05-29-2017 12:29 AM

lul

icantlearn 05-29-2017 12:29 AM

I remember him rebuilding the trans by those special dudes. And then the bad thing happened where he had to sell everything. But I never head what he thought about it. Thats unfortunate that it didn't meet your expectations. I would probably rage quit after I dumped a large sum of money on making something worse.

What does that mean?

One thing I do agree with him though, is the MR shifter.
It went to junk in his car. Started rattling and got real sloppy.
No idea if he was just man-handling it and hammered out the bushing, or got a defective bushing or what

That no matter how much money you dump into a miata transmission, it will never feel like an s2000 transmission.

aidandj 05-29-2017 12:35 AM

I have beat the shit out of my delrin bushing. No wear.

stefanst 05-29-2017 12:48 AM

Delrin bushings serve in serious suspensions at very substantial loads. No chance a puny human forearm, even as attractive as Aidan's, can destroy a Delrin bushing....

18psi 05-29-2017 12:50 AM

cool story broz.
I'd believe it if I didn't personally take apart his shifter when it rattled like a can full of marbles every time he went past 6k rpm and confirm it's looser than hustler

aidandj 05-29-2017 12:51 AM

There is a bolt that connects the shifter pocket thing to the shift rod. It can come loose. Pat had it happen to him. And the one I took apart from my busted 6 speed was loose too.

Maybe he got the wrong size bushing.

turbofan 05-29-2017 11:48 AM

I thought the shifter in his car felt fine too. No it doesn't feel like an S2000 shifter. No I don't like it nearly as well as my Miata with the MR tall/angled shifter.

But comparing my s2000 vs my Miata, I can't tell you which I prefer -- they're just different. The stook is smoother and lighter, but the Miata has more of a rifle-bolt quality to it which I really like.

I don't doubt that he had an issue with the MR shifter, but his transmission is just fine.

I think he is referring to 99% of folks who might read this, and not whack jobs like you and me, who fix perfectly good working things.

thumpetto007 05-29-2017 01:32 PM

I had a failure in the plastic channel inserts of the mr shifter, and also the bottom shifter bushing cracked.

I ended up discovering the shop that reinstalled the trans and suspension did everything wrong. Thats why the shifter felt worse when I visited V. They were dumb enough to put on the mr spacer bushing clocked incorrectly over the detent pins? and there was a ton of slop.

Now its much better, but I still hate the shifting.

Chilicharger665 05-29-2017 09:01 PM

I have had two MR shifters and they were both awesome. I installed them myself easily and without error. I only have my shitty 01 because of the shifter. It is that enjoyable to shift.

Finally switched over the synthetic. 1319 miles in. Track day on Thursday. Need to check over the valve train, do some more ducting and then it should be good to go. Brake pads and fluid too.

Oh and I really need to schedule dyno time. With all the valve train fuckery I missed everything I had planned

aidandj 05-29-2017 10:20 PM

Valve train appears to be fine. Now it's just brakes and ducting work then track on Thursday
