Hi, i am starting the build of what will be hopefully the lightest turbo miata time attack cars in the world. They will have '99 turbo motors, full cage, carbon fibre everything, and as much metal cut out as we can. We are almost finished stripping the first car-



And the second car is yet to see our wicked ways-



The silver car lost it's fuel tank hump, parcel shelf, and seatbelt towers last night.

If you guys have any sugestions, we are always keen to listen.

They are going in next week to get the cages installed.

Wow, that's one hell of a statement to make. Do you know what the lightest turbo miata time attack car weighs? AKA: what is your final weight goal?

Plans to acid dip the chassis to get rid of weather proofing?

I don't know what the lightest car is. But we are going to give it a go. We probably will just grind off the under side with a wire wheel. My na weighs about 1760lbs, and these will be lighter.

OP:
get rid of the steel safety cups on the engine mounts, ditch the intake manifold support bracket, make sure you have the latest alternator (should already have with the '99), replace the front glass with a poly (or get rid of the front glass and wear a closed face helmet)

cut out the trunk pan, replace with flat aluminum

We have cut out the floor of the boot that the spare wheel sits in and the fuel tank hump, parcel shelf as well as the seat belt towers. It will have a flat floor from the seat to the very back of the car. Probably alloy. We where going to do it in carbon, but decided not too.

Yep. The new ones will have a fuel cell next to the driver, on the passenger floor.

Yes, so you can carry a passenger. Why would you want the tank sitting so high? I know some people will say that it helps with weight distrubution. But the rear wing and rear diffuser will add weight to the rear when you are at speed. I was reading the other day- a car with 50/50 weight static,.. when at speed will end up 40/60 due to font end lift going down the straight. That's why you have to add aero. To balance your car while it is driving.

I like to live dangerously. Seriously though, we will have the fuel cell boxed in an alloy box, using the original filler point from the oem tank. And i think it's one of the safest places on the cars. Totally surrounded by a rollcage.

My guess is sitting next to a fuel cell, boxed and barred (cage) in a Miata is probably safer than sitting in front of the OE gas tank. That said, I'm surprised any sanctioning body would allow the fuel cell in the car. I know here they've got rules (build guidelines) that specifically work towards separating the fuel from the driver compartment. Actually the ASN (FIA Canada) allowed the NB Miatas to run with the stock fuel tank because of it's location. It was indirectly suggested that fuel cell was sufficiently isolated within the body/chassis to protect it.
