fuck the color, do that motor.

twin turbo VQ?

The valve cover needs to be modded after machining being that the center section between cyl 1 and 2 need to be filled with new metal due to the milling.

Do you think -10 or -12 would be best on the valve cover?

Also port out the hole that connects the center baffle to the driver's side baffle and weld the pcv shut.

I have a -12 male bung but just keep in mind that the fittings are pretty big. You can see pics in my build thread. Note that from what I found there are also no off-the-shelf catch cans with -12 bungs. Only up to -10. That said you can custom order a can with any bungs and breather vents you want for cheaper than ebay from petersonfluidsys.com

Personally I think bigger is better. Again though, -12 hose does not have the same bend radius as smaller hose and it takes up more space.

shlammed 03-21-2011 03:38 PM

Fae, im not worried, I do my own fabrication and -12 catch can is only 15 minutes away.

I will just bore the 3/4" npt fittings out of my current can and weld on a -12an fitting to the atpturbo vband catchcan that i currently have.

In regards to the size, the elbow fittings post a fairly large restriction on the size of the through-way. I think the theory behind it is HVLP.. high volume low pressure.. to allow you to not suck oil through the holes. Factory turbo engines for example a 1jz uses 1" hose (or similar) factory (-16AN)

Audi 2.7tt...modded to some extent.

Yah I think that the HVLP has worked for me- I don't see clouds of smoke under WOT behind me at all and I am running a slashcut (vent to exhaust)

ordered pipe to make intercooler charge piping.

2.5" hot, 3" cold. all aluminum.

Also ordered the 1/8 NPT bung for IAT sensor. Debating running it on the Intercooler or adjacent to the intercooler on the cold pipe.

Faeflora 03-21-2011 06:35 PM

What IAT sensor does AEM use?

shlammed 03-21-2011 07:58 PM

Any sensor.

It has calibration for most sensors but if you know the curve for your sensor you plug in the voltage or resistance wtv it is for it's relative temperature.

shlammed 03-22-2011 10:43 AM

Ordered velocity stacks and runner material. Need to get the intake manifold flange ordered and i need to get some material for the plenum.

Im going to be using the stock 2002 throttle body still.

runners are going to be ~7-8" long and the plenum volume i need to calculate... i think the rule is 1.5x the engine capacity on a boosted engine? aka 2.7 liters. So it I make it 2.5 liters i will maintain some throttle response as the 150% is on the high side of the limits.

ARTech 03-22-2011 10:56 PM

Subscribed.

Awesome build so far. Can't wait to see the IM. Are you using a Ross extrusion or will you be making the plenum from scratch?

shlammed 03-22-2011 11:09 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Plenum is from scratch.

This is a design I am working off of.
Attachment 190201

The runner and velocity stacks are Ross parts. Their oval sized type works best with the miata port having overlaid the runner onto the port in cad.

I'm just not sure where to get the quarter dome from locally, so it might be pie cut pipe

ARTech 03-23-2011 12:28 AM

Looks good. Pie cuts are a pain, especially on aluminum. I'd just order a cap or hemisphere from these guys:

https://www.shopwagner.com/nxc/nxcli.nsf

They're cheap.

Gotpsi? 03-23-2011 12:52 AM

Also use a bend in the center, hard edges = bad. Also what size tubing are you using and what plenum volume are you shooting for?

shlammed 03-23-2011 09:25 AM

tubing for the plenum? to be determined by the shape of the plenum to optimize at 2.5 Liters.

should be using something like 3.25" id 0.080 wall pipe cut lengthwise for the top. I was planning on using a flat floor with the Ross velocity stacks flush in there. see the plenum design above.

The inside of the manifold would look something like this if i have my way...

CNC'd aluminum is so sexy :makeout:

sub'd for goodness.

.080" is too thin for an intake. Use .125" at least. As for the velocity stacks, they flow better raised off the floor. I'd try that if you can. I'm not sure if the Ross stacks allow for that. I'm using horns from velocity of sound for mine.

Last thing, this design seems easier to build and is very similar to the one you linked:

http://www.mazworx.com/pics/det_mani_sm_9.jpg

shlammed 03-24-2011 04:56 PM

That design does look easier.
Thanks ARTech.

The large radius bend in 0.125" may be hard to source... but it makes sense.

For the time being, im not overly worried about the stacks raising off the floor because of the shape the ross ones are it would take quite a bit of work to raise them properly.

Once i build mine, I am going to blueprint what I made and offer these as a complete bolt on intake for BP miatas. (with modification needed to cold pipe)

The ross ones have sharp ridges that have to be rounded down to use when raised I used them once and have move to another source for that reason.
