oh, they are -10an? you should be fine. I have a single -12an to a breather can.

Yeah, the lines are all -10AN for the catch can. I drilled the valve cover out to match too.

I love every last bit of this build.

there will be quite a bit of suction coming from the intake pipe to the catch can...I'm curious if you'll be oiling the intake too much in the process.

That thought has crossed also my mind as I originally had to tear down my motor due to oil in the intake. If I start to have any issuses I might try to reduce the line from the catch can to the intake, maybe that would help. I really don't want to go with a VTA setup though.

We went to a VTA setup after Solo Nationals. Planned on doing it before but ran out of time and didn't think it was going to be 'a big deal'... Well it was when the car was sucking tons of oil after PCV failure, so we deleted all the re-circulation stuff. It was smoking so bad we thought it had a broken ring land and didn't finish running the car Day 2.

So why exactly do people run such huge oil catch can lines?
I honestly don't know, I have a feeling I'm asking a stupid question.

Maybe since I'm not running a PCV and I have a modified passenger side valve cover baffle things might be a little different? If not, a catch can redesign will be in order with a breather added to reduce the suction or just VTA. Either way, thanks for the input I'll definately keep an eye on that issue.

So today was a productive day! Installed the starter, bled the clutch, installed the radiator, filled up all the fluids, primed the motor but we weren't quite able to get it to run. It was getting late so tomorrow after work hopefully we can get it running on some kind of base tune for clutch/motor break in.

larger lines slow down the velocity of flow, preventing it sucking excess fumes or going even faster and turning into a black hole vacuum cleaner (sucking in your oil)

to those who have had oil control issues....if your running -8an sized, go to -10 or -12, maybe add another breather hose...that type of thing and you will have less issues.

Venturi in exhaust tube -w- check valve instead if it gives you troubles and you still don't want to go VTA?
Still not convinced Venturi systems work with even a hint of an exhaust baffle though.

Faeflora ran a slash cut in his exhaust, IIRC it was one of the few successful parts of his build.

WAITWUT?

No. Not at all. He specifically said it sucked and he wouldn't do it again if given the chance.

I even still have the email where he told me that it was a pain in the butt and he doesn't like it.

thenuge26 10-23-2013 03:44 PM

Wow, either I missed that or it's the only thing he didn't complain about in his build thread.

18psi 10-23-2013 07:30 PM

Lots of failure points.
Lots of clutter.
The check valves get clogged/fail
You get to smell burning oil all the time
Your muffler and tip and bumper are coated with burnt oil

It sucks.

So the car got put back together and was ready to start up but there is an issue with the MS2e not sending spark to cylinder 2 and 3. The coils were swapped and the issue stayed with cylinder 2 and 3. My tuner is currently working with Reverant's to to and resolve the issue. Hopefully they will get the issue figured out and I'll get to drive the car again sometime soon. I'm definately not going to make it to the HPDE event on the 2nd-3rd of November.

Didn't blow up from EFR awesomeness?!

Breaking is going well! I'm up to about 200 miles so far and the car drives amazing with the Megasquirt.

I've been neglecting updating this thread due to the excessive amount of shit that has gone wrong with my project. The latest issue was a catastrophic failure involving spun rod bearings on cylinders 1 & 2 that appears to have been caused by oil starvation at some point in time. The tear down showed a seized oil pressure relief valve in the shut position on the oil pump and the gears had been rubbing against the housing of the pump itself.

Motor had 566 miles at tear down.. :(

The main bearings (clearance was .0025")

Three of the rod bearings.. I didn't get a picture of the bearing at cylinder 2 but it was pretty badly gone (clearance was .0024")
