Is it as much fun as your turbo'd NB was? |

This car is disgustingly clean. Srs. Props to you sir.
The last time I saw an FD this clean and this stock was being driven by a middle aged woman in Pacific Grove. White FD with black interior, manual trans, would probably make Vlad pass out what with his white car fetish. :giggle: I was waiting for a friend to come back with the moving truck when I saw it so I walked over to drool. The lady came out and caught me gawking and I said: Me: This is probably the most beautiful FD RX-7 I've ever seen. How long have you owned it? Is that the original paint? Her: Please don't. Its my only car. I really need it. Me: Excuse me? Her: Just please don't. Me: Don't what? I just wanted to say that I really liked your car. Her: :eek3: Then she walked away. I'm still baffled by that interaction. Am I that intimidating? |

That montego RX is disgustingly clean. I'm super jealous. That car and color got me INTO Mazdas 20-ish years ago. "It's my only car. I need it." - THAT is when you start using "ma'am" and holding your hands out in a non-threatening way. lol |

Trust me... :brain: FDs on the other hand have retained their value, they are timeless machines to be exact. to remind you FDs are 1993-1995 cars and still look compared to sport cars available today, and in such condition they are hard to find. |

I can't believe how futuristic the gauge cluster is arranged. It's one of my favorite parts about the car.
Also the car gave inspiration to the nb. I see so many parts and angles of the fd that are similar. |

I installed two new Mazda belts. Sucked because I did it all on no knowledge. In doing so I did break a bolt head off the airpump which we tried to extract. Made a new tap and the new bolt pattern wouldn't fit through the bracket underneath the airpump. So I said fuck it. I'll get one at pettit racing for cheap.
Not so much, it cost 100 but it was a low mileage pump. I could have deleted the pump but I'd rather do so with a powerfc so the car runs better if I did a delete without the powerfc. Anyways I got everything together and it's running perfect. I also installed a new mazda fuel filter. Tomorrow the aluminum air separator tank will go in with a new from mazda center console bezel. |

I have contributed my first "How to Thread" on a shifter rebuild.
This is what I performed this morning" This morning I gathered the parts to rebuild the shifter top to bottom. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_074513 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr I started by removing the Center Console Bezel and un-clipping the connectors to the fog lights, defroster, bulb to the ashtray etc. There are 4 10 mm bolts for the upper dust boot. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_071956 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr One of the reason why I am rebuilding the shifter is because I know how 21 years is on rubber. Especially brittle mazdas' shifts boots from my previous ownership of a 99 miata. They are very similar in design and parts. So this rebuild is very familiar to me. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_072301 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr After removing the upper boot, you can see the lower boot torn as well being held in place with 3 10mm bolts. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_072405 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr In the file folder of receipts that I inherited with the purchase of my rx7 last month from the one owner who saved everything, I saw that the bushings were replaced a while back but still wanted to do the job myself to have that security of knowing it is new and done in my ownership of the vehicle. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_072944 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr The Paper Gasket that is married to the lower dust boot from factory is now stuck on the turret. I had to scrape it off carefully https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_073058 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr Down in the turret you can see a bushing and underneath that is a spring washer. To get this out I need to use a hammer and a socket extension that fit perfectly to nudge that pin back. replace the broken spring washer on the bottom of the lip first then the bushing. The cutout of the bushing should be facing where the pin will be reinserted. I used a crowbar to push the pin back in. This was the only part that I felt need attention. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_073811 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr When I removed the bushing the flex washer was broken so be careful not letting the fragmented parts fall in the turret. This is what I pulled out https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_074159 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr I reassembled the shifter with new parts and very mildly lubed the shifter to slide the lower dust boot over. Prior to doing so make sure the new bushing and clamp flexed washer is connected. You can see indention on the bushing where the washer clamps over. Be gently not to bend the clamps. The was faces up. I put 4oz. of transmission fluid in the turret. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_080925 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr Now we need to make sure the bushing that we inserted on the side of the shifter ball is facing that Pin we talked about earlier. I used a rubber mallet to tap the shifter back in place with the bottom bushing inserting into the turret. Again, gentle. I slipped the upper boot over the shifter with some lube so it was easy to slide over and tightend the nuts done in a star formation. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_082529 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr The top boot I received goes over the shifter and has a lip to go over the dust boot/middle boot and fits perfect https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_082657 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr Place the new heat shield over the shifter like so and reassemble the connectors to the center console and were done. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=141208516120140930_082749 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr |
Amazing how similar that is to the Miata shifter. I wonder if a Miata shifter would fit? The business end looks extremely similar to the NA.
|
If the lore is to be believed, the transmissions are the same.
|
|
Apparently it is. Whatevr.
|
Pretty sketchy add, very few pictures and they mostly seem to be your pics too.

but it's 260 RELIABLE horsepower and torque. It's up to it.

Maybe they will blow it up before it sells.

So a few things:
Kept checking my oil levels and the oil gauge on the cluster was acting sporadic. Oil wwas decreasing but I wasn't seeing much on the ground where I parked. Just a drip. So I called Lowes automotive and brought the car in where the motor was completely rebuilt by the shop.- Come to find out, the oil send get unit seal was leaking and it was replaced under there warranty even being the second owner. They were very helpful. Thought the motor is not a year old yet. So I found out yesterday that the drivers side fan isn't kicking on. Checked the fuse and it's still intact. The passenger is working fine. I confirmed the malfunction turning on the ac when both fans are supposed to kick on.- So I'm trying to find out if I should get a new oem fan motor or go after market and purchase a fan setup like spal? Also, does anyone know of any nice gauges other aem |

I just ordered two new fan motors. Gonna replace both while I'm down in there. Mazda sold me the pair for a little under 200 each which is 7 dollars above cost for them. They were awesome and helpful. They are probably going to be installed tomorrow |

So I was pretty intimidated taking the entire front assembly of the motor apart like airbox, battery, intercooler, and upper radiayor hose but it wasn't all that bad.
Found out why my temp gauge started to creep and a burning electrical smell. It was the fan. So on Monday I'll be ordering two new fans with new hardware. I absolutely hate rust but love airplane stripper. That stuff ate up everything. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413131437 20141011_103236 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413131437 20141011_103248 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413131437 20141011_121124 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1413131437 20141011_133118 by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr |
Thanks for taking pics. I need to get in there and upgrade my radiator. Nice to get an idea of what is all down there.

I am going to make a write up since there isn't one. I can help you out with the process. I had to figure it out.
|
I forgot to make a how to.. pm me so I can write it up
Regarding suspension in the rear, I'm replacing every bushing. Though some are not available in the aftermarket world and need to be directly sourced through mazda, I don't know of I want to stick with all oem or go stiffer? I was wondering if there is a compound that is mazda competition stiff but stiff provides a comfortable ride. |

Nope. FD is an "R" box. I was also curious about the shifters, though... I have a B2600 transmission sitting here that has an RX7 shifter in it, so that works, and i'd assume vice versa. I suppose i could throw a spare Miata shifter in there and see how that goes. Would love to have a MiataRoadster tall angled shifter in my FD box end game. |

That would be nice to know. Maybe if they fit I can order one and quite possibly have miataroadster become an rx7 vendor

I have some issues I need to clear up like Why am I keeping my hand on the shifter for so long? Why am I not having both hands on the steering wheel like I should be doing instead swagging it out one handed on the course?
Need to work on that. Also the video is my best time. 49.813 I was getting 50.2- 50.7 all day long. So I was enthusiastic about breaking under 50 |
Looks like a helluva course, and looked pretty fast to me. Nice work.
|
I felt the course was tight and constricted. It had two slaloms one going into a a left turn down a straight at beginning and one towards the end of the video where after a straight went into a slalom with a tight left and right.
Regardless I was happy with my results completely stock and torn bushings. Today the car is getting the front windshield pulled to replace the moulding and stripping around the perimeter. It's curling and exposing what's underneath. I don't want a future problem with rust where water seeps in little pockets of the old adhesive. I was told that the previous owner also quite possibly tried to add a adhesive himself to fix the issue. So I'm going in there with oem seals getting the job done right. |
The car is getting a complete sequential system service;
Update the crankcase and turbo vent breather system by passing the warm up system "Florida is warm already" and fuel regulator switch Fit sequential control system with HD hose and install over boost safety circuit calibrating system actuators tune up: plugs, wires, fuelfilter, servicing ignition system, fuel system, airfilter, tune and adjust for optimum performance and longevity Install thermostat, fan switch, replace turbo cooling hoses, flushing system, pressure check cooling system, service cooling fan relays, update central system, verify proper operation 185f fan switch Green engine sensor temp Cold air induction system with ICD cover kit, dual K&N filters and "V" duct inlet system off road use Cool power kit, twin turbo 20ft. The car is at Mazda right now. The reason is because after I installed a remanufactured alternator, it seemed one of the wires to the sensor clip that plugs in the alternator was stripped out of its connector.
The power supply cable from the alternator started to burn and melt causing a plastic burn smell. I got the car towed to Mazda from Orlando to Melbourne using AAA. So the car is getting a new Co-harness to fix the burnt current one. The cars low beams also are not working simultaneously as this all happened. I also am getting a full inspection done because I'm driving to DGRR and afterwards taking a cross country trip in the Rx-7. So while the car is at mazda, I'm getting brand new coil packs and in the next couple weeks having mazda replace all the bushings. Now you think I'm crazy having the dealership work on the car and pay dealership prices but I'm receiving quality work on one special mechanic who has worked on rotaries since 1990 and I'm paying for oem parts at wholesale price. I can't wait to get my car back. |
Stock Rx7 pull:

"This video is private"
I'd love to see it. |
Okay so it's finalized.
Speaking with James from Mazda competition has been extremely pleasant. He helped me out multiple times and we together made sure what I needed. J-auto helped me out for 40 mins on the phone for everything else Mazda competition didn't have. We went over my order from Mazda and created an order over the phone on his Web site to make sure the entire job was complete front to back.- I purchased Mazda competition bushings. They are stiffer rubber oem bushings that are not available in the factory.- I went with j-auto pillow balls with j auto toe links, inner/auto tie rods/ boot covers, ball joint boots, and super pro trailing arm bushing.- After the help here online and to James and j-auto, I feel like I am making the right decision. |
So I got a used exhaust from Pettit racing because there is a giant hole that's unrepairable on top of the oem muffler. It's a 3 inch far can. Well see how long this will last. I have my eyes on a full titanium cat back.
