Mini_FD '99 Flyin' Miata Turbo Build

1 Attachment(s)
I'm going to start this new build thread with pictures of the items I have already received for my future installation. I have bought a used\BNIB older style Flyin' Miata GT2560R turbo kit.

I also purchased a used Built by Reverant MegaSquirt 2v.3 ecu to run my system. My goals are low and efficient since this is my first turbo install and I'm daily driving my miata. Ive owned the car for 4 years now. My cherry is being popped. I have fiveo motorsports ev14 460cc plug and play injectors with a Walboro 195lph fuel pump.

Here is the first picture

Hard oil and water lines from Flyin' Miata along with an AEM digital boost gauge.

I have the silicone piping and Flyin' Miata intercooler on its way .
This is all I have for now. I might make a for sale thread for the older piping and intercooler. Just not sure how much it is worth for a fair price.

Keep you all updated and I hope I don't disappoint and looking forward to those who contribute on advice and help in the future.

I had that same boost and UEGO wideband gauge in the same a pillar pod on my 2000. The blinking lights drove me BONKERS and were clearly view-able from behind and outside the car at night.

They are nice gauges though :)

Our builds are almost identical ...that is, once I get mine started

BlackBandit 03-02-2014 08:53 AM

I hope that the light doesn't bother me driving at night. They did have a tinted filter that reduces the leds down. Well just have to see. But I promise I won't let you down. I'll also check out your build thread.

EO2K 03-02-2014 09:42 AM

I don't have a build thread up yet. At least, not a turbo one. :loser:

Intercooler, bov, piping?

BlackBandit 03-03-2014 08:18 PM

Intercooler and piping is coming tomorrow from Flyin Miata the forged fm bov is next to the turbo in the picture.

EO2K 03-03-2014 08:27 PM

Looks pretty good other than maybe hardware? I've got my entire hotside assembled with OEM Nissan 8mm inconel studs n nuts. It seems like pretty solid stuff for a street car.

Your oil feed assembly appears to me missing the BSP to NPT adapter, oil T and a 90° fitting? I can get pics of mine if you are missing them (though they should be common enough.)

BlackBandit 03-03-2014 08:33 PM

The first post has a pic of the hard oil and water lines. Could you verify we are talking about the same lines?

EO2K 03-04-2014 01:12 AM

1 Attachment(s)
Your coolant and drain lines look fine, I was referring to the oil feed. Pic will make this easier:

Attachment 239331

The 1/8" BSPT goes into the block and the 7/16"x24 goes into the turbo. They want you to jam your stock 1/8" BSPT sender into the other side of the Tee, not sure I like that. I also have a steel Tee somewhere in the garage, I'm not wild about this brass one. Also, my oil feed fitting at the turbo is unrestricted if that counts for anything. I haven't run it yet so I guess I'll find out if I need one or not.

BlackBandit 03-04-2014 05:50 AM

I'll probably get a new line made for the oil feed line but I believe the ss lines in the last pic was one of them I'm not completely sure. Note they were not part of the catch can lines.

EO2K 03-04-2014 10:38 AM

Hell, that image worked at home, is it not working here? I'll re-upload it

BlackBandit 03-04-2014 10:39 AM

Try to reload the page.

EO2K 03-04-2014 11:35 AM

Working now?

The smaller stainless line next to your catch can looks like the correct feed line, but I didn't see the other fittings. Don't forget to sleeve that thing in something to prevent it from sawing through everything in your engine bay.

Are you going to be running the FM one-piece silicone intercooler pipes?

BlackBandit 03-04-2014 12:35 PM

I am, and I'll make a new feed line. What would I sleeve it with?

FM silicone piping and intercooler by rocketeerbandit, on Flickr

EO2K 03-04-2014 02:39 PM

I always thought black was a good color for the Miata. My NA was black. I miss the color but don't miss washing it

The FM kit for the SS feed line includes some sections of rubber hose of some sort and clamps. I believe the intent is to split it and slip over the SS anywhere it comes in contact with anything behind the engine and on the drivers side framerail. While I'm sure its functional, it looks a bit hackneyed to me. I haven't figured out what to do about it yet to make it prettier. Plastic splitloom looks like crap so I might try some of the nylon "chinese finger trap" style expandable wire loom and rubber coated wire clamps to secure it along the firewall.

Want to do me a favor and measure the length on the aluminum section of your intercooler plumbing? The section right before the throttle body 90° silicone section. I think that's the ONE part I'm missing and I don't have everything installed yet to get a measurement. Pretty please? ;)

BlackBandit 03-04-2014 02:47 PM

Yeah I can I just need to be on the same page as you. Let me check. Also the picture is working now.

BlackBandit 03-04-2014 03:02 PM

I believe now I swear my eyes are playing tricks. It looks like 55-56 mm in length a notch below 7 inches

EO2K 03-04-2014 03:18 PM

Awesome! I'm using a Turbosmart Kompact BOV and I didn't want a bunch of adapters in there mucking things up. Sounds like I can order a 12" stick of 2.5" and roll my own. Thank you very much! :bigtu:

When are you going to start your install?

BlackBandit 03-04-2014 03:31 PM

Next weekend. Man I can't wait.

BlackBandit 03-06-2014 01:31 PM

I was wondering if anyone ran a v6 Mazda millenia oil filter on there miatas? It's a direct fit and the filter is bigger.

EO2K 03-06-2014 01:45 PM

Yep, others have been doing this for a LOOOOOONG time. For Mobil 1 the Miata PN is M1-108 and the the Millenia is M1-110. I've been using whatever the WIX interchange is for the M1-110 since I bought my car.

concealer404 03-06-2014 01:54 PM

They mention a V6 Millenia.

All Millenias were V6s. 2.5 or 2.3? Or are both the same?

Also seeing mention of using an 88-92 MX6 filter. 88-92 MX6s can use LT-5 Corvette filters. They're enormous.

Would be fun on a Miata if they fit, dimensions wise.

BlackBandit 03-06-2014 01:55 PM

I have been running it as well but was wondering it the glowshift sandwich oil adapter will still fit with the v6 filter.

BlackBandit 03-15-2014 09:57 AM

It's official. Installation today and tuning tomorrow.

Long day of tuning and over a dozen pulls. But we are set. I need to get a midpipe, electronic boost controller, and relocate the itp sensor so the car won't run lean.

If I'm reading that correctly, 257hp/259tq @ 14psi on a GT2560R w/2.5" exhaust? Most excellent! :bigtu:

Got a better shot of that boost & afr table? It looks like there is still a bit of taper, I'm assuming you are using some sort of MBC currently?

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 01:33 AM

I'm using a quickly bought vibrant boost controller last minute. Stock midpipe. And I'll take a better picture. We got it up to 267 with e85.

And good job btw. That's healthy power. Get the ebc dialed in and you should see a bunch of lowend torque increase.
Start saving up for a build for when those rods decide they've had enough of 250+tq ;)

Lolwut? Yeah, expect some more efficiency out of a larger exhaust fo sho.

Also: damn you and your E85 availability.

turbofan 03-17-2014 02:31 AM

Seriously strong numbers. Like Vlad said, the rods will likely not be happy for long at 250 wtq (and neither will your 5-speed... You're still on the 5-speed right?).

Now your car has the go to back up the show. Nice work.

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 05:44 AM

The rods will give on any turbo application car it's just a matter of when. And I have discussed with Ken that if it did occur where to go if the situation arises. Ken spent a solid full 24 hours tuning the car with over a dozen pulls to make sure everything was perfect. Now I am aware that I'm drastically cutting my engines life in half but I'm not also hitting it hard light to light. I will be as careful as anyone else new to boost will be lol.

First things first... midpipe and to take your suggestions and raising the car a bit with wider wheels and tires.

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 05:53 AM

Ps we drop the boost down last night as well.

concealer404 03-17-2014 09:06 AM

Damn dude! Nice job, those are REALLY strong numbers. :)

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 09:09 AM

I took it out this morning it it took 5 times before it started up. It kept lighting up and dying. Finally got it. So I didn't do extremely hard driving but I was spiking 16lbs. I'm gonna bring it done a quarter turn on the boost controller hopefully bring it to 15 or 14lbs.

concealer404 03-17-2014 09:11 AM

Needs some cold start work, huh? :bowrofl:

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 09:12 AM

Lol I was told it's just part of the game.

concealer404 03-17-2014 09:14 AM

It is. You'll figure it out. :)

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 09:16 AM

I'm also going to be relocating the air sensor from the ss pipe I got from fm connecting to the throttle body silicone elbow to the intercooler so the car doesn't lean out when I'm heatsoaked.

EO2K 03-17-2014 11:40 AM

This. This is exactly what I want out of my FMII. Can't wait to see what it'll do with an EBC ;)

Where is your source for the WGA hooked up to currently?

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 11:43 AM

I know right. What ebc are you using or gonna use?

EO2K 03-17-2014 12:03 PM

Either the one DIYAutoTune or the one from TrackSpeed Engineering. I've read that the DIY one can be a bit more temperature sensitive than the TSE unit, but its also cheaper. Bunch of other options out there as well, but those are the two I've seen most people have success with here on MT.

Fireindc 03-17-2014 01:51 PM

Excellent results! cold start is certainly part of the game, but it's really not that hard. Read up on it and take some time to dial it in next cold start.

Get some videos of a quick pull, i'd love to see it on the street.

18psi 03-17-2014 02:08 PM

Rough cold starts means you need to tune your cold start. See my thread about it, there are also tons of others. Its one of those things a shop will never really do for you, gotta do it yourself, they just do the easy/fun part of making power, none of the hard and time consuming stuff like cold starts and all that.

Also rods don't "give way on any turbo application, just a matter of when". Many other cars have rods strong enough to withstand 500-700hp just fine. The miata just happens not to be one of those cars.

If you want to preserve your rods and trans, run some crappy tires in the back that will spin all the time lol
But you already lowered the boost so it will probably be fine.

BlackBandit 03-17-2014 06:08 PM

I believe I'm at 14 right now. And I'm prepared to build a motor if it goes. For now more smiles...
