I won the IRPerformance street motor mounts so I just installed those. My motor mounts were pretty bad so anything would have felt stiffer and balance the cars drivetrain in a way we're it wouldn't have mattered what type of mount I put in. It would all felt equal and amazed me how well it feels. I really did want the Mazda competition mounts but hey are 900 dollars shipped.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1466388254 Untitled by Gerald Mugar, on Flickr Today I was let aware by the pictures I posted of coolant dripping on top of the motor mount was installed incorrectly. The red bushing, bolt, nut was supposed to be underneath the subframe with the bolt gravity fed. I also fixed a vacuum line that I had connected with a fitting to another line to extend the length to reach a port on the manifold with new silicone 3.5mm black silicone hose. I bought 10 feet of it for future fixes. I also purchased 7 feet of 6mm silicone hoses. I installed a new start Lev-r cap for the AST. And today I ordered new high rated 500•F rated rubber caps from McMaster-Carr for my new intake pipes. I changed out the plastic fitting going into the housing that twists itself to the heater core line running on the back side of the firewall. I believe that was the cause of the leak. I also replaced the 90* elbow hose from the bottom of the throttle body as well for good faith. I also burped the radiator system and added more coolant.

Just installed the HKS RS Intakes. I don't like the red caps that are high temperature rating.

So this is how I've been cooling the car down after driving it around town and park it in my garage. I see high temps when I come back to the car after going into a store but they quickly drop once I start the car. It doesn't run hot. Just sits hot at unsettling high numbers.
I have a 3 Fan set up. The 2800cfm air mover gets placed in front of the opening of the bumpers mouth, the white fan sits on the bumper mounts and in front of the intercooler while I remove the pressure chamber to the side to get air pushed under the intake manifold, then the oscillating fan to bow air to both of the other two. LOL paranoid yes. Getting the car to cool down faster, Yes. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1467820695 Untitled by Gerald Mugar, on Flickr https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1467820695 Untitled by Gerald Mugar, on Flickr |

Videos of this past weekends autocross at the Lake Tech center in Tavares
|
All 9s ngk plugs
Spark plugs were installed in January. I've done 4-5 autocross events, Deals Gap, mainly run on 93 non ethanol, use 20/50 idemitsu oil, and 1/2 oz per gallon of Idemistu premix on every fill up of 16 gallons. And HKS twin power https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8588/2...fd441b0b_b.jpg Untitled by Gerald Mugar, on Flickr |
Well, the car was towed to Kilo Racing and the motor is going to be rebuilt. I won't know exactly what the cause was until he finishes up a couple jobs. So when he's cracking open the motor, I'll make sure to take pics so we all can Oooo and awe.

well that sucks.

Oil is extremely sticky and it's accumulated and puddled a quarter size from the downpipe connecting to the midpipe.

Bummer. Goes to show that even the cleanest, nicest, most well kept examples of these are horribly unreliable and live up to their reputation.
Still one of the sexiest cars though :) |
I agree. I'm wondering how it happened though. Maybe the previous builder? Maybe it was me going top speeds? I don't know. But what I do know is it'll be fixed up and ready to enjoy again mid-September

Lol or like crazy eyes Steve buschemi when your rotors go opposite direction

Rofl
So guess what?! It was the primary turubo oil seal that blew! Not the motor. So the motor is still pulled out of the car. Kilo says that I have a slight e shaft crank pulley wobble. Says the motor is fine for another 3-5 years. I'm sure I'll be back on this thread in 2 years saying the motor blew. We'll see. So I just bought stage 3 BNRs for my replacement turbos. Stock setup. Flows even better then the 99 twins and 2x as much as the oem. Runs cooler and pushes out more power. |
Well that's good news!!!
This thread still terrifies me... |
Am i the only one that is confused about the path of exhaust gases through that turbo setup?

Boost Control Info --Ian |
I still don't get where the air flows, but that is helpful in understanding how the turbos play together.
It looks like both turbo outlets to go the same place with no outlet. Must be some passages inside that manifold. Funky. |
Your looking at the turbos up top. The Manifold is at the bottom
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ddb3ea1426.jpg |
Oh ok, so there's an exhaust outlet that isn't shown in your photos. That makes a lot of sense now.
Pretty serious stuff! Incredibly complex. It's kinda funny. "Let's build an engine whose main characteristics are small size and simplicity, and add a heavy, large, elaborate turbocharging setup to it." Seems to work well anyhow, especially this BNR setup. |
It's overly engineered along with twice as many solenoids, vacuum lines, etc.

I suspect the long-term answer is going to be a motor/generator attached to the CHRA like they're doing in F1 right now (MGU-H). Use battery power to spin the turbo up, then take power off the turbine shaft to recharge the battery once it's making boost instead of using a wastegate. --Ian |
You suppose that will be implemented in the new RX-9 with there 400+hp goal?
|
Still need an intercooler, tune, and maybe a mid-pipe. I'm pumped with the numbers...
|
Why post a dyno video with no numbers?
|
Enter suspense:
311hp no torque numbers. Dyno was held for a meet and didn't have the equipment for a rotary. I am going to upgrade the fuel pump to a Supra tt running constant 12v to it. Then get a medium stock location intercooler. |
no torque numbers. dyno doesn't read that low of a tq figure
:giggle: jk jk 311hp or whp? if whp that's a good number for that car for sure |

What Irperformance indicated why my motor blew:
It was a complete rebuild with new housings and rotors from mazda individually. I have the receipt from the previous owner and the shop the built it in Sarasota. Irperformance discovered that the Endplay was too loose because the rear spacer was grinder/sanded down and reused. The Irons had too much heat and failed The catalytic converter melted The crank angle sensor was over sighted and the bracket was broken so it wasn't reading the trigger wheel accurately. Ultimately the apex seal chipped from detonation. If Irperformance wants to comment, please feel free to clarify even further. pictures: https://flic.kr/p/Tf6Bxwhttps://flic.kr/p/Tf6Bxw by https://www.flickr.com/photos/geraldmugar/, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/TQaaBrhttps://flic.kr/p/TQaaBr by https://www.flickr.com/photos/geraldmugar/, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/SAmKaXhttps://flic.kr/p/SAmKaX by https://www.flickr.com/photos/geraldmugar/, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/TQaaJkhttps://flic.kr/p/TQaaJk by https://www.flickr.com/photos/geraldmugar/, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/TCH1RKhttps://flic.kr/p/TCH1RK by https://www.flickr.com/photos/geraldmugar/, on Flickr https://flic.kr/p/TLxb7Ahttps://flic.kr/p/TLxb7A by https://www.flickr.com/photos/geraldmugar/, on Flickr |

The Oil Mixing Pump was heavily scored. Its being replaced with a new one.

Wow, that's some serious carnage.
Good ness I love your car. |
Damage notwithstanding, that engine is remarkably clean for a rotary. IDK about RX-7 circles, but I do know in RX-8 circles, it is recommended to inspect the cat frequently for any signs of clogging. It is also recommended to replace the ignition coils, wires, and plugs every 20K miles--more often if you frequently take advantage of the high redline. Generally speaking, a weak ignition system results in a clogged cat, which then kills the seals.
I LOVE your car, but reading this thread reminded me of why I can only own one rotary at a time. |
Oh my god your car is gorgeous.

404hp 356tq at 15lbs |
Had a blast with the car at Deals Gap Rotary Rally. We had to replace the oil restrictors though because there is a lot of blow by in both the hot and cold side of the intercooler piping collecting around the silicone couplers. I'm monitoring the car to see if the new custom oil restrictor bolts that Irp made will help out. Fingers crossed.

Neat thread -- I just picked up an identical car (93 MB Touring, 55k miles). What do you think of the Ohlins on the street? My car has some Eibach/Bilstein setup and it rides like absolute garbage. The Xidas in my NA are like a Cadillac compared to this thing.

i would certainly buy ohlins again. They handle so well street or autocross. Make sure to get some battle versions arms from J-Auto and any bushings you might need that squeak or pop driving the FD. Nice find and keep her simple and clean. i want to share with everyone the accident i had 8/17 that totaled the FD |
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
that's such a bummer. hope you're ok are you going to fix it? looks repairable |
I had driven the FD from Florida to Iowa to visit in-laws for a week. The car did a wonderful job with 0 issues on the way up. We took smaller roads to enjoy the scenery and small towns every state had to offer on the way up for 3 days.
Within the last 30 miles of the trip and 45 mins away from our destination, I had been using cruise control as I had been for the majority of the trip. Certainly saved my foot from falling asleep. 1,400 miles will do so. So the county road we were on had beautiful fields of corn and soybeans growing on either side of us with the hills rolling like a ship at sea going up and down waves of the ocean. I was on cruise control enjoying the dusk colors and Jeanne was dreaming out the window. As I was set on cruise and approaching the top of another hill and the county line was switching over, so did the road conditions. We had went from full black top pavement to rough gravel in a blink of an eye. I had yelled at Jeanne to Hold On! I cancelled cruise control as we were already on gravel road going 55 using the brakes as an instant reaction. No feet were on the pedals prior because of using CC. The car swerved left and I corrected. It swerved right and we were facing a deep embankment. I corrected again. The car then swerved left and was slowing down but not fast enough before going off into the left side of the embankment. We were both okay and no airbags deployed. We had landed perched on top of a tree log that had stopped us. A branch went through the mouth of the bumper and the drivers side took most of the impact. We waited for four hours to get ride from the two company. Brought the car back to the Family Farm and waited. The negotiations took a while for the value of the vehicle which turned into months. The car stayed on the Farm over winter and once I had bought another FD 6 months later(this past february) we shipped both FDs to IRperformance to start the healing process. They swapped pretty much everything we had previously done to the Montego blue to the Chaste White Rx7 and more. The damage isn't as dramatic as the pictures look so we were able to successfully swap from one car to the other. I brought the both cars back to Florida and they are sitting in the garage. I also have hagerty insurance on the 95 Chaste white for an agreed value so that we don't take such a loss financially again. We were able to brush our knees and elbows off this situation and come out very lucky with the new Rotary. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1936/...0d927c4b_c.jpgDSC04983 by Gerald Mugar, on Flickr |
So glad to see you're back on the road again in the new (to you) RX-7! Will you be bringing this one out to any central FL events or autocrosses this fall? Also, is that a Velocity Red MSM rearview mirror?
|
We shall see about autocrossing. And the mirror is a VR Msm mirror. I had one in the black nb. I desired to have one for the Rx7 and the red just pops on the white and black. I had a new windshield put in and was lucky to find the mirror at the same time so they can glue it on. |
So you got an even better looking one :D nice

It was rough on the outside. The interior was mint. People stayed away from this rare 95 because it was automatic. Irperformance did a full manual swap on it. |
Happy Halloween!!!
