So swapped them out (I missed having an easily accessible fuel rail) and this had to at least be hurting performance a bit... One was literally missing a quarter of itself. Another crumbled as I removed the injector. The other two only had hairline cracks. Also the o-rings rolled off the fuel injectors with zero effort. I plan to either send in my spare 460s for testing/cleaning or get new injectors soon so hopefully the rubber holds for a bit. EDIT: Butt dyno seems to think it felt better. It was hard to tell but I think I have full boost by 4000 now. I'll have to set the ebc to 14psi and do a log tonight. It is 105 out so that might effect some stuff. |

Well this is a monumental improvement. I wish I would have started the 4th gear pull at a lower rpm... but watching boost it's at 10psi by 3500 which is what koto said was usual. The run started at 4500rpm and boost was near instant.

Injector duty cycle remains at ~70 until 5700rpm where it's back up high again which is odd... but the rpm jumped at the same. That boost is dead straight though which I'm very happy about. Holy schnikes! Those o-rings were new when I last fooled with the injectors, which was sometime in 2009. They've taken a lot of abuse since then though, including long periods sitting (deployments). Fuel smell gone?
WRT the pressure switch: I don't really like that style, no, but it's what came with the DO basic kit. There isn't really a good way to mount it solidly to something in the engine bay and it's difficult to read where you've set the system to turn on. I always aimed for 5 psi. FRT - something to think about if you use that direct port hardware ;) DC at 90%.. yeah. 460s are just about maxxed out here. Depending on how much you want to mess around with it in TS you might consider upping the size to ~550 and re-tuning fuel. As a bonus, injector technology has improved since the '80s so you'd get the better spray pattern and atomization too. |

For the record when I bought the car I didn't think that I'd be getting a brand new car. It's 20 years old, so I'm not worried about having to replace things like this ;)
Moving on to fun things: I found yet another TB. Looks like a 1.8, but it has the exact 4 wire pig tail I need. Cleaning out the garage always nets at least one good find. But looking at this thing.. it doesn't look like any TB I've seen on a 1.8. Is this an auto one? It is a 1.8 right? Just don't scrub off the black coating on the butterfly edges. Idle will be fucked up and eventually you'll get a new TB. |

its a 94 throttle body. They had that weird 2-lever thing for 1 year.

In other news I've decided on my engine. It will be a 1.8 with stock internals. I'll run 10psi daily and 14psi for fun. The AEM EBC makes switching boost painless and stock can handle that easy. I will only have to make small modifcations to make it work. Replacement manifold and typical 1.6>1.8 conversion stuff.
I sent out my 460cc spare set to DW today. So should have some fresh injectors. I'll be doing a reroute when I assemble as well as multi-port WI which will be done on a spare 1.8 manifold. And of course I'll switch to 4 wire TPS. |
Here's a stupid question: Will the NA 1.8 Intake Manifold fit on a 99' head?
I know the 99' IM has VICS, which is part of the reason I don't want it. I hate how it loops over so close to the head, making it a PITA to do anything in that region. I know it's really not *that* much of an inconvenience, but whatever. I guess I'll have to see how much of a performance gain I will get from VICS if use it. you want VICS and it takes like, I dunno, 30 seconds to remove the upper half.
Unless you are fitting a squaretop IM, I will ban you if you don't use the VICS IM you have. I extend that to actually utilizing VICS as well...I will ban if you install the head and fail to control the actuator. |
If that damn thing is installed it will be working. I just like the openness of the NA manifold. Oh well, one can dream.

how often do you need to fondle your injectors? I pulled the upper for the first time on a car i was tuning (i had to confirm the check valve was in place), it was a non issue and came off easily, without issue, and it wasn't even a deal.
