Maybe look to the air bag suspension people for giant regulators.

I'm sure that one of those electric turbos that adds 50 hp would be perfect for helping the big turbo spool up!

In a few years, the car will run on compressed air, and make 800whp doing it. But for now, it's going to have an air tank to spool the turbo so I can get a good launch on the car and quickly spool the turbo when needed. Been busy, but going to try and look at the car tomorrow about if it's possible to put a belt driven compressor on the motor. That would be a lot better than an electric compressor.

I've looked into the electric turbo that do make a few psi boost. All of them are too expensive for what they do. I've looked into making my own, but for now, not pursuing that, too many things to have to figure out and things that could go wrong. But if I ever went that route, my goal would be to make one large enough and powerful enough to make say, 30 PSI boost by itself. I would only do it if I could build one that could perform as well as a regular exhaust driven turbo. Anything else seems like a waste, just run a regular turbo.

Let's assume a 5 gallon tank at 200 psi (this seems to be about at the upper range of what's reasonable to stick in the trunk). That's 18.5 liters at 13.6 atmospheres, or about 250 liter-atmospheres. Assume the motor is at 3000 RPM, is 1.8L, and we want 15 psi of boost to spool it, we need 45 liter-atmospheres per second to make that boost, so that's about 5 seconds of boost.

So OK, maybe it isn't completely stupid for a drag racing application. Looks like it'd need a 1 inch air line to dump those 45 liters/sec (90 CFM) though, and I hate to think how big the regulator would be..

Or he could buy a 4500psi 90cu paintball tank and end up with 460 liter-atmo. And that much air mass is much easier to dump into the exhaust at the 800psi an on tank paintball regulator outputs.

Your HP number seems to spot on for you to not be referencing this, but if you weren't or others didn't know
These guys are about to start production sales on boost in a can last I saw. They go through 1.5 of those bottles in one 1/4 mi pass.
Compressed Air supercharging (CAS) ? Dramatic Power Gains And Outstanding Reliability

Article doing a quicker rundown:
A New Kind of Compressed Air Powers This 9-Second Camaro ? and Changes Everything

Long (27m) but interesting and in-depth interview

Sorry to drive further off topic, but I stumbled upon the vid recently. Did you post a log of your launch? I might have missed it if you did, but would love to see the MAP signal just for fun.

I may have been referencing that.....

Ok, I was! I absolutely wanna try either their setup, or my version of that in the future. For drag racing, that is perfect. It's basically a nitrous motor that doesn't use nitrous.

I haven't posted a log lately I don't think. I haven't launched the car with the EFR yet, hope to do that tomorrow, and if I do, I'll post that log hopefully with a time slip!

Wouldn't dumping air into the exhaust make your AFR gauge inaccurate? Or do I just need more coffee?

You could use nitrogen or CO2 to avoid that (O2 sensor only reads oxygen, remember). But you're only going to be doing this at WOT and that's generally open loop.

Yes it will, but for spoolup that's ok for me. I'll just tune the AFRs without the air system on.

This is the video I was given, check out how well this works! I am optimistic I can get similar results with a similar setup on my car.

Wow, I actually stopped being ilvidiot to watch that. I think this is worth trying. I need to get back to boost.

Small update, I've had a running list of "little things" I needed to get around to fixing or adjusting. All crap like tightening clamps, fixing an exhaust leak at a V-band, fixing a few rattles, and opening the spool valve permanently to see how that affects the spool on the front turbo. Actually it was 17 different items and took all day to do them, and I probably added 3 or 4 more things I found while doing those. It's late, and raining, so no test drive, will do that when it's dry and see how it does. A quick startup and rev seems to indicate no rattles, so hopes that those are history now. Exhaust is louder with the spool valve out, so that is kinda cool. It will be interesting to see how the EFR responds to that change, when I had the ebay turbo the valve helped overall, but I wanted to see how it did with the EFR.

I recently went to iridium plugs to see if that would fix my misfire. I put them in as they were removed from the box at .029". Well, they misfired probably worse than the coppers @ .015", although it was more like an on/off switch with the iridium's. So I gapped those down to .018" and have my fingers crossed that will finally fix my misfire.

Don't worry, the air setup will happen. Not sure exactly when, it's not a huge rush but it will go on the car.

UPDATE!

So.... I've driven the car a few times since running the new iridium plugs at .018" gap and... IT FIXED THE MISFIRE!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank God.

I haven't had a laptop in the car in a while. Decided to pull the logs and have a look. Well....

I'm apparently running 35 PSI, and at 7,000 RPMs the ID 1300 injectors that flow 1700cc/min at my fuel pressure, are at 97.3% duty cycle with AFR's of 10.8. That explains why it fells, uh, pretty fast. LOL maxed out ID1300s! I made a pull to 7500 and it leaned out but was ripping!

Did I mention it's retarded quick? I need more injector, lot more. I wanna run 45 PSI and see what that's like. I'm guessing it's back to 500whp or so right now based on the duty cycle, but now doing that with 1,500 RPM less, and 3 lbs less boost vs two years ago.
