As some of you already know from my dyno/timesheet thread, I had a problem with my 5 speed at the drag strip this week. Don't worry, I made it home and my car still functions.
So for some background, I already had the most complaining, whiny, grouchy tranny ever. When you start it up it is nice and quiet, until you let the clutch out, then it starts to complain. Been like that for a while.
So now, it shuts up when you put the clutch in, until you select 1st gear, then the thing starts bitching and moaning. No apparent difference other than the new noise.
I have done quite a few 1/4 miles on the Mt 90 in there but I don't recall exactly when I changed it last.
I decided I would change the oil a couple times with cheap stuff and see what happens, before I swap in my spare. There was plenty of fine sparkly material in the oil and on the drain plug, but no large pieces. I tried some Lucas 80 90 last night, took it for a brief test drive, no real difference yet.
Used redline gear oil sure smells a lot better than even brand new regular stuff. I had forgotten how bad real gear oil smells.
Unbelievable, after 4 short drives about 20 miles total, the new noise seems to be completely gone. The old whirring sound in neutral with the clutch out is still there, but like I said it's been there awhile.
Maybe I should decrease my tranny oil change interval to 6k or so. At this power level maybe every other engine oil change it is necessary to do the tranny too.
Maybe I should change my diff fluid too, IIRC I did the tranny and diff around the same time.
I might be calling an early fate for this 5 speed. The noise is back and I am on my 2nd oil change now. The thing still functions fine but the sounds are annoying/embarrassing.
In other news, my 2nd catch can finally seems to have a little oil in it.
Can't remember the mileage when I put it on but I think it's been thousands.
Ok phukit, I am over the embarrassment, my sheit is still as fast as pretty much any average driver's anything for the first 100 yards or so, even here in super car land. These folks can't drive, I swear.
Further more I kept turning the music off to listen for my biatching tranny, now I crank the tunes, annoyance gone.
I got up in the tranny and pumped it full of fresh lube twice, man I'm tired.
This tranny is a huge ***** weasel. Well I've never phucked a weasel, but I've blown a tranny, a couple rear ends and even a few seals.
Maybe I should just tear apart my spare and cryo treat all the steel, like thumpetto would do. Supposedly my LN2 dewar is coming soon, I don't want to be down tho if my current tranny fails completely (coming soon I know.)

This is most definitely a pilot bearing. And you mention the clutch goes in, noise goes away, then once in 1st it comes back.. Is the "once in 1st" condition after you let the clutch out and drive away in 1st or before? Throw-out could be worn as well. Both of mine were trashed when I pulled the trans to replace the clutch. Just thinking about this since most trans that fail go boom and 'splode, I haven't seen or read many that make warning noises.

The local brewery had my favorite"San Quentin Breakout Stout" in 22oz to go bottles. It was a sad day when I learned that they sell 22oz bottles to go for 1/2 the price of a pint to stay. I will bring a few bottles when thumpetto shows up.
Also I couldn't disagree more about the throwout bearing. IMHO the throwout bearing makes noise when you step on the clutch pedal, not the other way around besides it is relatively new, compared to the 240000 mile bearings in the tranny.
I think the whirring sound in neutral with the clutch out comes from the input shaft bearings. That is why when I step on the clutch it slowly stops spinning and becomes silent as the motor isn't turning the input shaft anymore.
The new noise in 1st gear while stopped does seem like it could be a pilot or throwout bearing but I suspect that it is actually related to the synchros and gears somehow. Just going on my experience with this one, the new sound also started after abusing the thing pretty bad. I don't think the throwout bearing cares how hard I launch, the pilot bearing might though. The oil change improved the noise significantly too but maybe some leaked into the pilot bearing?
Who knows, I will learn soon enough.
I think that once you're finally ready to replace, you do a video of 5500rpm spark cut LC with extra fuel enrichment launch from 3rd gear and just ride her out until she goes.
A glorious 5sp such as yours deserves the most honorable last hoorah she can get

But yes, bearings do wear, especially at that mileage. Another thing to consider, a worn pilot bearing is only audible in neutral because you are sitting still and can actually hear it. From a design standpoint, if its worn and audible while sitting still with the clutch out, its the same with the clutch out in gears 1-5, we just can't hear it because the car is in motion. Or maybe, you can in your case if its bad enough.

Both the clutch bearings are relatively new, I am aware that they can fail prematurely due to contamination, poor QC, ect, ect...
But the pilot bearing only spins when the clutch pedal is depressed, otherwise the crank, flywheel and input shaft are all spinning the same speed. Firmly engaged by the clutch, I do agree that the new sound in 1st could be the pilot bearing, but again it's much newer than the tranny.
