Hey guys so, problem.
Noticed my crank pulley was wobbling. Took it off, found this.

My question is - can I use this crank or am I fucked? I guess worst case is that I would need a new crank and possibly new bearings, depending on crank wear.

rleete 06-27-2012 09:06 AM

Crank, possibly. JB Weld is your friend. Supposedly, people have repaired worse and run then for quite a while.

Pully is screwed. Replace it.

I just have speakers. I was thinking about just wiring a small 2 channel amp and using my phone. The amp is like <10lbs. I was looking at Boston Acoustics GTA-502

Well then look at your corner weights and use the amp as ballast.

Oscar 06-27-2012 06:51 PM

Given your background, connect some potatoes in series and weld that key in with some jumper cables :giggle:

I just read this whole thread and it is epic!

The crank keyway looks fine in my opinion.

Thanks man! Yeah I kept it as-is. A new crank pulley arrived so I can FINALLY run a god-damn 36-1 tooth trigger wheel.

Oh and the car has 4000 miles since I built. That's about 4000 more than I was expecting out of an engine I built myself.

soviet 07-03-2012 10:37 AM

I think the car is sentient. There was some drivetrain noise so I jacked the car up, checked the diff oil level (full) and the trans (not full). Ordered 4 quarts of MTG for future hoarding. Adjusted the clutch because 1st gear was difficult to get into unless the clutch was ALL OF IT IN. Guessing my clutch is close to end of its lifespan. I bought it used. From Faeflora. I'll probably just get a new clutch disk.

Anyways, after basically doing nothing car runs great and drivetrain noise is gone. So what the fuсk? I basically give it some attention, do nothing and it runs great. I guess I built Christine?

18psi 07-03-2012 10:45 AM

Just wait til she kills your girlfriend*

And if you bought the clutch from Fae it was most likely destroyed before you even put it in:giggle:

*boyfriend

soviet 07-03-2012 10:51 AM

Girlfriend? Can't afford.

Clutch is great actually. Very grabby. Hard enough to drive that most people fail at it, yet not too bad that I can dd it smoothly.

"You can drive my car until you stall it" works great too. Because it happens in first 10 seconds and they haven't backed out of the driveway yet.

Braineack 07-03-2012 10:53 AM

ha, ill keep that in mind.

Faeflora 07-03-2012 11:44 AM

Naw dude clutch disc should be ok unless you havr been doing lota launch etc

There are two cluth adjustment bolts

Did you do both?

One kinda raises the pedal. Also check clutch juice and you got rid of the rubber clutch hose right?

Faeflora 07-03-2012 11:44 AM

That said replacement disc is only like $150

soviet 07-03-2012 11:51 AM

yes, clutch disk is cheap.

2 bolts for clutch pedal? I just adjusted the rod that goes into clutch master... yes it raised the pedal a bit but also less free play. I'm almost maxing out that bolt, though.

Sorry bby but I'm not letting anyone drive my car until a "fixed" replacement turbonator arrives.

Here's what happened last 3 times people drove my car:
1st guy - return fuel line came off, sprayed fuel all over engine bay.
2nd guy - misshifted from 3rd into 2nd
3rd guy - turbo exploded (yes, someone else was driving my car when it happened)

that being said, there was one guy who drove my car with 0 issues. he also owns a turbo miata, though. so maybe that's the secret to not failing? :)

18psi 07-03-2012 12:14 PM

brain has a turbo miata, but its a 1.6, so maybe half a turbo miata:giggle:

Braineack 07-03-2012 12:15 PM

Lars let me drive his car home from a dyno day once. I dont abuse other people's cars, nor my own.

My bff can drive my car any time he wants. You should also be able to handle the puck clutch. You ran one for a while in your car.

Braineack 07-03-2012 12:22 PM

I don't usually drive other people's cars, and If I do, I treat them gently.

But my own I thrash.

soviet 07-03-2012 12:35 PM

inb4 Braineack breaking my car.

Faeflora 07-03-2012 12:36 PM

Yup two---

here are good instructions

http://www.flyinmiata.com/support/in...isc/Clutch.pdf

Faeflora 07-03-2012 12:39 PM

Nobody has ever driven my car since it was over 250hp. Frankly with my current setup, boost and therefore power delivery is very very different in each gear and someone unfamiliar with that would have some sudden surprises. Plus the likelyhood of something falling off or severing itself has proven itself to be very high.

soviet 07-03-2012 12:44 PM

the other rod is the clutch switch. i'm not really using it (although apparently it affects deceleration settings so I should wire it in...)

Today, I got my transmission oil. Go to fill it up, open the top plug... fluid comes out, meaning it's filled.... thanks car, 2 days ago you didnt do this. Thanks for regenerating some transmission fluid.

So that was the last thing I wanted to check. Then I setup launch control and put on the ALL OF IT wastegate. That one hits about 15 to 17 psi just on wastegate. So with some boost control loving, ALL OF IT is possible. I got to about 22psi. Holy jesus christ!

Launch control is also incredible. I can build like close to 20 psi, launch in 2nd and lay down 150ft of tire marks, basically all the way to 55mph or whatever I hit in 2nd. Its great. Obviously I did it right in front of my office, so I can brag tomorrow.

Launch control datalog. 3900 rpm spark cut retard to 1* launch

lol. ALL OF THE Gs

18psi 07-06-2012 11:59 AM

also we'll need logs of your spool in reverse....if you don't hit ALL OF IT in reverse by 2k, your setup sucks.

Leafy 07-06-2012 01:30 PM

Wait, 20 psi on launch control? Is that just 2-step spark cut or anti-lag?

soviet 07-06-2012 01:53 PM

2 step, 100% spark cut, retard to 1*, 3900 limiter. I've only launched it like 3 times but the log does show 20psi....

Leafy 07-06-2012 01:59 PM

God thats insane. I can't wait till I have my 6258 setup on a tubular manifold and vvt. I'm glad I read this whole build at work, I like the way you ran the coolant line.

weeee. i still have to sort out the launch control. on boost gauge it definitely looks like 5psi, so I dunno why log shows 20... I can't tell.

i dont see why not, I could easily make 15psi on launch control like that.

turn antilag on and see what happens...lolz

pusha 07-08-2012 02:43 PM

yes you need antilag

soviet 07-09-2012 12:01 PM

I have issue with launch control. With it enabled, sometimes when I'm casually shifting it would think I'm in launch control mode and basically go spark cut after I complete the shift.

It's lame. How to fix it? Add an inline switch to clutch switch? Raise launch min TPS?

Leafy 07-09-2012 12:11 PM

Add I'm a maximum speed based off of front wheel speed. Easiest way to do it is with an abs hub.

soviet 07-09-2012 12:15 PM

Nah I'm just going to hook into the RSW speed connector on the gauge clsuter. Unfortunately I don't think MS3 has an option for maximum speed on launch control....

simply turn on flatshit to rev to 7200rpm and raise the TPS% a bit.

I agree with a speed for launch control, I thought that was added, you can tap into your VSS off your cluster and run it into the expander for the speed...

but seriously, post antilag videos now.

Leafy 07-09-2012 05:45 PM

I thought the vss for the cluster was taken off the tranny so it gave you rear wheel speed. Thats not all that useful in the launch control aspect especially if you have it set for too much wheel spin. You want it to cut out just before your actual speed matches your rear wheel speed.

soviet 07-12-2012 09:12 PM

I think blew something up :)

50/50 engine or turbo. Not quite sure. Limped 2 miles home. Doesn't appear to be leaking massive amounts of oil. Vacuum is fine.

Video of how it sounded once I got home - you hear a rattle that's directly linked to the RPM. Also it doesn't *seem* to build boost but not sure.

18psi 07-12-2012 09:14 PM

welp.. that was fun....was it 1600 dollars worth of fun?

soviet 07-12-2012 09:14 PM

fuсk yeah!!!!!

worst case scenario is that I blew *both* engine and turbo up.

18psi 07-12-2012 09:22 PM

welp thats all that matters.....I vote borked churbo again but dunno
