2000 Mazda MX-5 Miata - $7500 FIRM

Status: Clean Title I have a 2000 Mazda MX-5 Miata for sale, in USA - Michigan. Mileage: 76000 miles $7500 firm price, willing to consider trades for more practical vehicles, must be sortof interesting in some way. But worst I can say is no. Alright guys, putting this car up to see if I get any bites. Just bought it. *****Edit: No more baby, sadly. Even so, we are moving back to Utah before summertime and it would be easier to move without the Miata. That being said, if it's not sold by mid-March I'm gonna register it and keep it.***** Found out my wife is pregnant 2 weeks after buying it. Probably best for me to let it go until I have a real career to get a fun car again. Breaks my heart because this car is an absolute blast to drive. After driving it home from Pittsburgh I was a little down on it (I was being a sissy, used to driving cushy cars), but after driving it around (been parked the last few weeks since the snow came) I realized that it's really a good blend for an everyday car. It runs great off boost, and it goes like crazy under boost. The tune isn't great, but it's totally drivable. Needs more tuning of idle when it's cold but once warm everything feels fine. I haven't tested it with the A/C running, though I have been told the A/C works (been too cold the whole time I've had the car to test it). I've put about 1k miles on it including the drive over from PA. The car currently has around 76k miles on it, and the motor has around 16k on it according to the PO. The turbo has less than that, although I’m not sure of the exact mileage on the turbo. The rest of this post is mostly copy/pasted from the FS thread kiladonut posted just a month and a half ago, with a few bits more information. UNDERHOOD: honed block 9.1:1 pistons m-tuned rods chrom-moly rings new headgasket all new seals/gaskets/etc new water pump/timing belt new serpentine belts Custom coolant re-route new radiator BEGi log manifold Godspeed 3076 .86 a/r 4" inlet turbo internal wastegate (full boost by 4500 ish rpm) stainless turbo feed line custom welded oil return into oilpan custom 3" downpipe custom heat shield off brand strut tower bar custom 3" mandrel exhaust with 6x18 cannister and 2 big resonators custom 2.5" aluminum front mount intercooler kit GM ait sensor forge blow off valve nxs manual boost controller Injector Dynamics 1000cc injectors Walbro 255LPH fuel pump FM Level 2 clutch ROLLERS: Raceland Coilovers TRMotorsport 15x9 +36 wheels Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 Porterfield RS3 front brake pads INSIDE: megasquirt DIYPNP with ms2-extra firmware internal MAp sensor hardwired tuning cable (removable) Autometer boost gauge AEM uego wideband o2 kit (hardwired into MS) MOMO JDM rx7 fd3s steering wheel Pioneer head unit (lights up same color as speedometer) NB2 center console OUTSIDE: Kee soft top with glass window (less than 3 years old now. has 2 small tears under the bottom right corner of the rear window. One has been sealed, one has not. Leaks a wee bit. Rest of top is in great shape.) blacked out 03 Miata projector headlights (I've learned that the hi-beams don't work) Xentec HID kit 6000k Red out tail lights 03 Miata front bumper Optional equipment Front lip Optional side skirts OEM rear mud flaps smoked emblems OEM 01+ Mazda Miata "crisp white" paint job The bad: Paint isn't perfect, there is some chipping at the top of the drivers door. I believe it was due to poor prep from whoever painted it. It is not noticeable unless pointed out but should be looked into. There is also a bit of spidering stuff going on with the hood. You can't see it without looking 2 inches away during the daytime, but at night when parked under a street light you can see it. Car looks awesome from even 5 feet away, but on closer inspection you can see quite a few flaws from a less than stellar paint job. You have to convert it back to na for emissions inspection, as MegaSquirt doesn’t provide a connection signal via the OBDII port like the OEM ECU does. All the parts needed to do this will be included. It's a hacked-together spare exhaust and all other stuff but it works. The car was originally tuned to be run with e85. Here's kiladonut's story about the tune: "The PO had given me a tune for 93 the he used for storing the car in the winter and driving it from Cali to NY but it wasn’t very good. I flashed the firmware on the megasquirt from 3.0.3u to the current 3.2.1 and after accidentally frying the coil pack had it back up and running with the base tune from DIY. The car made ~300hp at 18 pounds on e85 but I currently have base tune timing map loaded and use with 93. Honestly the car needs to get some dyno time because it has a lot of potential and is super conservative. I think I have the e85 tunes I just never bothered to put them on (only one gas station near me even has e85). The tune that is currently on the car is okay but could use some smoothing out. Like I said, I did go to an autocross with this tune and the car drove great." Just as Tim (kiladonut) was, I'd be asking $8k for the car. I will include a small Acer netbook with carrying case and charger. It's actually a really decent little netbook: dual-core Atom processor, 320 GB hard drive, etc. It's basically this one here except with a bright blue top: Acer Aspire One 10.1 In Netbook - Atom Dual-Core, 1GB RAM, 320GB at HSN.com at HSN.com Again, this car really is a hoot to drive. It needs nothing to be a great, fast DD with occasional autocross use. I currently don't have money/a place to do the work to install track bits on this car, so I'm going to just have to revisit the turbo Miata dream at a later date. Just as Tim said: With a little time and patience this car can be a pristine example of a turbo Miata, and should be an awesome street/track/DD-capable setup. I am asking $8k for the car, which I feel is a fair price for a car this well sorted. I’m not really in a rush to sell, I own the car outright, so I have the title in hand. I check the thread regularly as well as my PM's. If you want to talk on the phone or text message, PM me and I'll send you my number. I will take better pictures and upload them within the next two days. These pictures were taken by the previous owner in mid-november. New pics and video, taken 2/9/13: I got it up on a lift and took some pics and a couple vids. For some reason, Youtube videos are double posting when embedding... weird. Deal. Pics from Photobucket: trturbofan's Library | Photobucket Video walkaround of the undercarriage: Video walkaround of the outside: Feel free to laugh when I'm being a dork. Pretty sure you all know what a tire is but thought I'd point it out anyway. |
Dang man... Happy for the baby, sad for the sale.
|
Thanks. We will see if I move it. If I don't then I'll just sell it maybe mid-summer after I've enjoyed it a bit. Kinda hoping it doesn't sell and ill have an excuse to keep playing!
|
And so my 1st slut changes hands yet again lol
|
Vlad...how many times is this now? 3?
|
Yup. Bryan, Tim, now Ed.
Whoever buys it should drive it back cross-country to CA and have me tune it again back to its glory days  |

Haha as strong as these things are with 260-ish whp i can't imagine what it would be like with the HP and torque curves from an LS3. What a little monster it would be.
|
Just saw this on FB. GLWS and the family Ed.
|
Willing to ship? What is the closest port you wanna drive to?
Saw this machine many times up for sale, now its my turn to show some interest hehe. Thanks, Simon |
I ended up working Saturday so I didn't have time to take pictures and the weather was sucky yesterday. Sunny today but working all stinkin' day.
Will get more pics up soon, including pics of any issues on the car. Would consider trades for more track-oriented cars (willing to consider older cars as well).

I found some old build info for this car. Here's the build thread for this turbo setup:
https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...p-49710/page4/ And here is his photoshoots thread. But currently all the pics are broken. https://www.miataturbo.net/media-53/...A-50838/page2/ Vlad, any chance you have any of these photos still laying around? |

I can Imagine that Ed, thanks for your time.
GLWS |
I uploaded a bunch of pics on Facebook. I think you should all be able to see them. If not, then I'll just, uh, upload them here when I get back to work. Tim took these, but still demonstrate the current condition of the car. Car pics | Facebook

No more baby, sadly. But we are still going to move back out to Utah and it would be an easier move without the Miata. This car is still available until March, at which point I will go ahead and register it and keep it.
|
PMd you about a possible trade.

Also sent you a pm.

PM Replied. Uploaded some pics from the PO taken in November. I will take more detailed pics when I can get it in the shop on a lift.

Man its so refreshing to see my 1st love still in 1 piece and doing fine and not wrapped around a tree or riced out.
GLWS man I keep forgetting to link you to all those pictures I still have of it. Sorry, been busy lately. |
Haha I'm glad to see it's not riced out or destroyed either. It's really a sweet car. Needs to get to a tuner though. I've had a misfire two different times under boost. I don't know what it is and I don't think it's going lean. Could be stock ignition. I don't know. Willing to shave a bit off the price to compensate though.
If I keep this thing I'm driving it back to Cali to put in a 6-speed and 3.9 torsen and have you tune it to its former glory. It's not a bad drive from Utah. |
Any chance it's something simple like the plugs being the wrong heat range?
|
Misfire could be because its rich too
|
I honestly have no idea. As Vlad said, it could be because it's rich, it could be a number of different things. I haven't had time to work on it and I can't drive it because sucky weather. It won't be anything real big because 99% of the time I have driven it, it just boosts strong and smooth. It's happened on only two occasions, spaced about a month apart. The first time it happened I was pretty low on fuel so I thought maybe it was that. After putting gas in it hadn't happened again. But the second time I had half a tank so that wasn't it.
|
mine did that exact same thing when it started to get cold and as i got colder out it got worse, mine was caused by a sudden spikes into stupid rich. a retune/ look into the tune for temperature adjustments will probably fix the problem.
|
Well anybody know of any good tuning shops between MI and TX.
|
In TX, but all the way down in Houston. Did FANTASTIC work on my sadly departed, and probably destroyed 94 Laguna Blue FMII. GHM / Gas Head Motorworks home. Clint Host is honest, detailed, and efficient.
|
Lovefab in Traverse City has a dyno and Cody tuned my car. But I may have a buddy interested in it.
|
i'll give your buddy a discount if you let me drive your NSX.
|
Willing to let it go for $7500. Someone come get it before I change my mind and start spending money on it. Just don't have time for it with working a bunch and getting ready to move cross-country. Would be easier to move without it.

Misfire is outside temp dependent...
Whew, 3rd post in a row...
Put it on a lift today and took pictures of the underside. Pics will follow... by Monday afternoon at the latest. Misfire is outside temp dependent. When the temp is in the teens/low 20's, it misfires nonstop. Today I took it out when it was sunny and 28. Had a small misfire, but then several pulls were totally solid and the misfire was gone. Basically the car tells you when it's too cold to drive it. When it misfires, time to park it and get out the winter beater  |
I think its begging you for some COPs. Its on stock crappy ignition after all
|
ed i have a spare cop harness laying around if you want it let me know, theres no coils on it but you can pick up a set for like 50-60 on ebay.

One thing I saw the last time it was misfiring is that the AFR gauge goes to lines during a misfire. It's not showing rich. To me that seems to suggest it's a fuel issue instead of an ignition issue, isn't that so? I would think if it's the same problem as Tadd described with his car, then the AFR gauge would show rich spikes. Maybe that's not a safe assumption. |
Sarcasm? No idea where you got that.
Its actually something I always meant to do and never got around to it. Even if the misfire isn't due to that, the car still needs some toyota or gm cops after that it needs tuning. desperately. it ran like a peach when I had it, and I've a feeling the other 2 owners messed up the tune horribly switching from e85 and moving the car clear across the country |
Just posted the M for sale on here. Hopefully it will sell eventually so I can pick this up before you decide to keep it haha.

If that's not possible, I'll be registering it and keeping it. If I keep it, I'll be doing a coil on plug setup of some sort and getting a decent tune set up on it, and keep it at least for a while. So... It's got until then if someone wants it. If someone wants it after March, I'd probably still sell it but it'd be $8k firm to cover the taxes I'll pay on it. Sucks but that's how it goes. This car is soooooo much fun though. Pretty awesome. Since it wasn't misfiring last time I took it out and the roads were dry, I got to just enjoy it for a minute. You're right about the ride on the Racelands too... It really rides pretty good for what it is. I got it up on a lift yesterday and took some pics and a couple vids. I will add to the first post as well. Just wanted to give ya a bump and say GLWS. I've missed this car a since I've sold it to you, it was a TON of fun!
|
Thanks Tim! I'm hoping it sells for the stress relief it would provide, but if I have to keep it, well, I won't drive it to Utah crying, that's for sure.
|
WOWWW east coast winters/roads/salt absolutely SODOMIZED my baby
I'll find pics of when I had it. On a lift just like that too. It was nowhere near like that. Sorry I've just never lived outside CA so it always blows my mind how badly your guys' climate takes its toll on cars The paint on the other hand unfortunately always was that way. Its not bad, but its not great. I wasn't completely happy with it but its still better than 70% of the miatas out there. |
Yeah, it's not too surprising that it looked much better when all the parts were new. Also, the paint coming off the muffler and stuff makes it look much uglier but isn't really evidence of any serious wear. yes some of the bolts on the underside are starting to get rusty. If I keep this sweet thing it'll be leaving the salt and never coming back. My '04 Jetta lived the first 8 years of its life in Utah driving year round, winter, everything. Put it up on a lift and it looks perfect still, everything looks like new. Utah uses dirt, not salt.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the automakers have something to do with using salt instead of dirt or sand. I dunno. Neither are good, but salt causes cancer. All that being said, the underside may not look like new but I don't feel like it really looks that bad. None of the rustish spots are at all significant, and none will lead to perforation unless the car lives in salt. We shall see how it all goes. Kinda started planning a trek out to Miatas at MRLS at the end of April... yet another reason not to sell it. But at this point it's still for sale. |
Oh, and all the tape on the car... is that when the guy bought it and left for NY? did he tape up the front end to protect it on the drive?
|
Yep. That video of it pulling out is the last day I had it. That's him driving it away.
And don't get me wrong: i'm sure its still in good shape, and probably still better than many others on the east side, I was just stunned to see that happen over 2 years or so because I have almost no experience with rust or road salt at all lol. It would probably take less than a day to clean off all the corrosion, re-spray the piping, etc and get that thing purrrrdy again |
I just don't understand driving a car like this through the winter. I bought a winter beater for about $100 more than a set of winter wheels and tires and parked the Miata.
|
Could someone give me some feedback to confirm that the photos I posted in the original post are, in fact, working?
Also... Mod please change the title to reflect price drop? Thanks!! |
Pictures seem to work. Also videos appear to be working as well.
|
Many thanks sir. Your first prop.

They work for me.
Also I dunno if bryan replaced my coolant re-route with another one, but I didn't have an m-tuned one on there. Its a DIY (and pics look like mine is still on there). Also its a regular begi log mani (IWG), not s5 (which is EWG). Also the high beams can easily be made to work by grounding them (you can follow the documentation to do this on m.net) Just some tips |

One more thing: Yesterday was a gorgeous, sunny day so I took it out again. I can confirm that the misfire is indeed temperature dependent. It ran perfectly yesterday. No funky idles, no misfire, just strong smooth boost, for the second time in a row that I've taken it out.
|
GRRR. Stop updating it with good info! Nobody want's my car :(
