There is a list compiled of the Top 10 most dangerous dogs. Out of the 5 links I've read, they are all the same; so I think this was a statistical basing. Good - that keeps it fair for this posting.
Do any of you own any of these types of dogs?

And another question. Were you surprised to see your dog on the list?
My family has had Boxers and Rottweilers. Also a Bouvier des Flandres, which isn't on the list, but since she was 29" at the shoulder and 130 lbs, most people considered her "scary" enough.

And we took great care to make sure they were trained properly and never out of our control.

I'd like to hear the other side of the Original story.
People tend to lie after the fact.

I wanna know what the guy that shot them has to say. Or bystanders/witnesses.
Here you go...

mgeoffriau - I've owned a Malamute as well. I was surprised to see it on the list.

I'm not surprised. A lot of the sled dog breeds are too much dog for the average pet owner.

If the cops showed up in my neighborhood and there were 3 pitbulls loose in the street they would shoot them for you. No question.

As the owner of two German Shepherds it is my responsibility to keep them restrained. If they get out and get hit by a car or shot in somebody's yard where they don't belong it is MY fault. It isn't the dog's fault, it isn't the driver's fault, and it damn sure isn't the shooter's fault.

You are an irresponsible dog owner. You are reaping the results of your actions. You are to blame for the death of your dogs and it makes you sad. I get it. You want to blame someone but you still aren't manning up and taking responsibility for your actions. I know it hurts and I get it. But you were responsible for their safety and you didn't take that responsibility seriously enough. It's really too bad for the dogs that they did not have a more responsible owner. It wasn't their fault. They were just being dogs. Be mad at yourself.

It sounds like the homeowner was LEGALLY justified. Whether it was the nice-guy thing to do is quite irrelevant. And as for the choice of which gun to use, the answer is obviously whichever is handy and loaded.

As an animal lover who has shot at a neighbor's dog who was in my backyard killing my animals before, I wish the dog owner hadn't put me in that position. I aimed at the ground and only nicked the dog's foot, and thankfully the dog owner was impressed enough by the situation that the dog was never loose again. I had words previously with the owner three times about it in the past to no avail. It's funny how someone can find a way to keep their dog in their yard when properly motivated. I buried three kittens that day and their momma got multiple stitches.

The info in that link is just horrible.

Here's a good way to scare people

The pit bull was bred especially for dog fighting and, sad as it is, they’re still used for this purpose today.
And no other info. Many experts will tell you that they can make great family dogs.

Slow down Tex...
1st - Florida has a ban on Pit bulls, yes? Atleast in Miami? This isn't Florida.
2nd- Yes, our responsibility to keep dogs contained. No contest here.
3rd- These were not my dogs. My dog is the bitch of Lexus/Diesel, and sister to Mack.
4th- Making people aware makes me to blame?
5th- I don't see where I have blamed anyone.
6th- So I am supposed to be held responsible for 3 dogs 2 hrs. away which I don't even own?
7th - It is too bad that a responsible owner had their electrical fence malfunction.
8th - Can't be mad at myself for that.
9th - If these dogs were on your property, then by all means...unload your arsenal.
10th - So you are stating that any incident is merely a lack of motivation?

11th - And most importantly - Identify the problem before committing to an answer.

What I don't like about this story is that these dogs weren't even on his property. The witness says the kids were outside riding bike. So I assume they were going up/down the street, saw the dogs, got scared and rode home to tell their parents. The father then got his gun and then IMO hunted the dogs down.

probably. i mean who's walking around with an AK, gets attacked by three dogs and can pull off three shots before he looks like the above?

Truth.

I've met plenty of humans whose life isn't worth near as much as a dog's.

Yes. Like Tony the dipshit...

And that picture brain posted is exactly why I wouldn't "wait to find out if the dog is friendly" or "call animal control" if I see it running at me. Those things do some damage.

There are differing levels of interest one can attach to solving/preventing a problem.
11th - And most importantly - Identify the problem before committing to an answer.
Que?

And with regard to Brain's pics, how does the dog know the difference between a burglar and a cop? Or the neighbor's kid? It really doesn't. That's the wildcard that scares everyone except the owner, because he's the only one not at risk.

Thanks to all who signed, and thanks to all actually. Glad to see this topic didn't resort to an off topic debate about pointless BS and spiral down in flames.
All points taken whether opinionated or factual. That's what keeps a community spirited. Anything else would just be plain boring.
Cheers!

No worries Sixshooter - and very good point with your closing. I'm right there with you on that. Dogs are still dogs and do what dogs will do. Fight or flight - that can't be changed.
I didn't know you born in Texas. What part?

Edit: (Spank my ***... I should've bundled those two posts together) Duh!

Dogs DO in fact, "snap". It's not a feature of any particular breed (though a breed may be more prone to it than others), it's a result of poor training and the general inability of people to read dogs accurately. People think they know a lot more about dog behavior and signals than they really do, and frequently will not pick up on "aggressive" or "uncomfortable" signals from a dog until it lunges at them or at another person.
wow, somebody makes an intelligent statement regarding pitbulls in a forum thread!

But let me also be clear that the "child" left on his own to roam the neighborhood; was safely inside before the guy went after the dogs to shoot them. Hell, his wife had to wake him up off the couch. The police found no evidence of any injuries. Period.

So everyone saying "the breed" would feel differently; if say, the dogs were Poodles instead?
Would you feel differently to hear the body hanging from the tree was a white guy?
Would you feel differently to find that the drug dealer was your Preacher?

It doesn't matter if you are stabbed with a pocket knife or hunting knife. Still will hurt like ****.

The owner of the American Staffordshire Terriers is the girlfriend of my cousin. She is a Veternarian and the dogs are AKC registered. I had to go through a background check before my purchase. I also was required to register my dog. She raises and sells these dogs and has been for quite some time. Until proven other wise, this is not a crime.
true, many times the dogs in question are not even pitbulls, but some mutts that may have had pitbull seed some generations ago. but what makes bigger headlines? "mixed beagle dog attacks man" or "pitbull attacks mailman"?
also, i know it's splitting hairs here, but a "staffordshire terrier" isn't an "american pit bull terrier". the stafforshire terrier is a designer breed developed not that long ago as a show dog. only the dogs with the biggest heads, broadest chests, and shortest stockiest bodies were bred to make an exaggerated, almost cartoonish appearance of what is traditionally thought to be a pit bull. sorry, to the op. i didn't read the article, but if you normally have your dog's under control and a malfunction caused them to get loose, i'm really sorry for your or their (the actual owner's of the dog's) loss. i know i made sure whenever my pit was out in the yard, she couldn't break loose of the serious chain with serious hardware. you'd be amazed what kind of things a pit can break loose from when they really want to.

One time a kid hopped our fence to b&e our house (he hit a few others). Well, when he hopped the fence he landed on the lab and got bit in the ***.

The parents of the kid tried to take the dog to destroy it but my father put up a fight. My dad won that battle. I think in todays world they would have tazed my father, arrested my mom and sister and beat the dog all while being caught by the neighbor filming it on his iphone to which he would be charged for unlawfully filming the police and would be subject to jail.

You know what else is vicious, cats!

I wanted to be fair so i did search for Jack Russell Terrier Kills and got one about them killing a cat and some rats.
