So I keep hearing about certain things that we used to do in the 2019 era are now available to people who are vaccinated. For example I heard on the easy listening radio morning show that the Miami Heat are going to allow more fans ,at a relaxed separated distance (whatever that means) and of course wearing masks, to attend games in a segregated section. So a vaccinated person can still contract the Chinese flu, can still pass on the Chinese virus, but gets to attend an NBA game with "relaxed social distancing guidelines" because ........ Oh yeah, if he does get the Chinese flu and has a hard time with it, he will likely not die, like 99% of people who get it. Wait, so why does someone who has the same infection possibility get special access? Oh yeah, duh, because he's vaccinated. Wait.....

Honest question because I do not keep up with all this stuff: is there a vaccine that can prevent you from getting/passing on the Chinese flu? Then I would understand. Otherwise I don't and anyone who would has failed at reasoning. But hey, maybe they're good at Science.

I don't want to dig into the identity politics here (ironic because thread), but from a purely scientific point of view -- yes, data from Israel (which has a very high rate of vaccination and collected health data on all citizens taking the BioNTech mRNA vaccine as part of their purchase agreement with Pfizer) has indicated that the risk of asymptomatic transmission is vastly reduced (>90%) among those who received the BNT162b2 vaccine (https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-re...iveness-pfizer , https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2101951). It is still very much so possible to pass on or contract SARS-CoV-2 after being vaccinated, but data suggests that this will almost always cause symptoms in the vaccinated individual, the main difference being the risk of hospitalization for that individual is reduced ~94%.

So, given that the overwhelming majority of epidemic dynamics modeling studies suggest asymptomatic transmission is the primary driver of community spread of SARS-CoV-2, this data would support the NBAs decision provided all attendees agree to self-screen for symptoms of infection before attending the game. Alternatively, it would indeed make temperature checks at the stadium effective, rather than the pandemic-theater they have been up until now given the relatively small role symptomatic transmission appears to play.

Disclaimer: Am scientist. Did take the Pfizer vaccine when it was offered to me, and I feel great about it! (remember it is literally free for anyway who chooses to take it). I guess the downside being I had to wait in line for 10 minutes and sit around for 15 minutes after each dose? Easy trade it my book, can't wait to attend an F1 race this year with no worries on my mind.

 

The whole fever thing is a bit odd to me. I had the Chinese flu, or at least two independent tests said I did. At the first sign of flu-like symptoms, I took my temperature and no fever. Same thing next day, and no fever. Went to work for an entire week and spent some time in places where they check for fever. No fever. So I never bothered to get tested. Then after 5-6 days of when I first started with flu like symptoms, they went away and my wife started feeling sick. She did run a fever and after three days decided to get tested. She came back positive. So I went and got tested and came back with the aforementioned positive result, albeit 10 or so days later.

So I don't know about the whole fever thing as being a way to be detectable as I am fairly certain I was positive since I later lost my sense of smell and taste and actually haven't 100% recovered them.

Oh yeah, and our 10 year old son never had any issues. If you ask me, he's the one that brought it to us.

I guess I'm trying to say is that I don't believe anyone has a real handle on this thing. Ans since I have personal experience with it, it's going to be tough for me to believe anything for a good while.
