The town of Port Charlotte, FL, where I grew up, is comprised largely of strip malls of varying age and size.

One, at the corner of US-41 and Forrest Nelson, was especially memorable. It was a duplex, with a gun shop on one side and a cupcake store on the other.

We used it as a landmark. "Guns 'n' Cupcakes." Pretty much the most American thing imaginable.

Judging by google street view, the gun store half is still around, although the cupcake half is now a vape store.

As a member of the Old Media, I try to bear in mind that what you see reported in the news is, in general, a highly sensationalized version of reality.

Like the Florida Man stories. To look at those headlines, you'd think that every single person in Florida was a meth-addicted pedophile who dabbles in beastiality when, in reality, less than half of the population of the state is actually like that.


But then there are those situations in which the thing being reported upon is so reprehensible that its mere existence, no matter how limited in scale, is abhorrent.

 

True but the other half of us either are meth-addicted or dabble in beastiality, just not both at the same time. That would just be stupid. Tell me, since you were from Flo Rida, how long before these irrepressible desires/addictions fade away after moving from the state? Asking for a friend.

 

Consider that some of the stories are pure Kabuki theater. Take the Russian invasion, for example. Our "sanctions" of two banks is ridiculous, given that we send Russia about $10,000,000 daily to send us oil. Kabuki theater. If we actually cared--at all--about Ukraine, we could start up our oil production and drop the price of oil to $40-$50 per barrel, starving Russia of profits. Russian oil is more expensive to get out of the ground.

Do we do that? Nope. Does Germany or the rest of NATO make a good faith effort to wean themselves off Russian oil? Nope.

Blame Russia, blame Trump, blame whomever the boogeyman is this week. It's all bread and circuses, except we're doing with less bread now. The "Great Reset" rolls along in the background...

 

Strongly disagree. Kabuki theater is entertaining, refined, and has a rich heritage.

US politics are, admittedly, entertaining on some level, but more in the way that seeing a man hit in the crotch with a football is entertaining. It grows stale quickly, and becomes painful the more you watch it.


Wouldn't work. The current President ran on a platform of opposing national self-sufficiency. His supporters would lose their minds if he proposed something as racist and patriarchal as providing for our own needs.


Also wouldn't work. Northern Europe is oil-poor, and Germany in particular needs all the fossil fuels they can get as they rapidly dismantle their nuclear infrastructure.

 

It's all for show. No need to be on the edge of your seat, as the outcome is predetermined. Of course there'd be a different outcome if Trump was in office...

Remember when Biden said Russia was likely to invade Ukraine? Usually our Central Planners have a few more brain cells to rub together. In Biden's case he does not. It's elder abuse at this point, and by extension abuse of everyone else but the 1% and our governmental overlords.
