Although I would argue that dumb people intentionally hurting themselves for e-popularity is platform-independent. What I'd deem to be the current wave of such challenges (eating laundry soap, gallon-smashing, eating a spoonful of pure cinnamon, inhaling condoms, etc) really began in earnest around 10-15 years ago, initially on Youtube, and then migrating towards Facebook and Instagram.
TikTok merely happens to be the most trendy platform at the moment amongst people in that age group. If MySpace were still popular amongst teens, then we'd be seeing this behavior there.
Regardless of US govt' intervention, newer platforms will arise, and the youth of tomorrow will react to people using TikTok the way that you & I react to email addresses ending in @aol.com.

You know what doesn't need gender to exist? Evil, like this person.
I've been following this on another forum. What's sad is that one of the news outlets apologized for using the "wrong" pronouns describing this person. I'm sure the parents were upset by that apology. Also, saw some tweets saying misgendering the murderer was just as bad as the acts committed. I would say I was surprised but I'm not really.
