The Current Events, News, and Politics Thread
I grew up in south FL, Pompano, Ft Lauderdale & then Coral Springs. I miss it often, especially the fishing. My favorite was to fish all the locks and bridges west of Pom, Ft Lauderdale & Hollywood for snook. It was a different time then. Today I bass fish professional team events from my 21xhp Triton.
My son is into any kind of fishing. He's caught a few snook around here. And goes regularly to the lakes that are populated with bass. He caught his first peacock bass a couple of weeks ago. He also likes the pier fishing. Wants me to take him to the Pompano pier soon. Might make a weekend out of it and rent a room in the area before the winter rates go into effect.
But my in-laws live in one in Pembroke Pines and I must say it's not all that bad. They aren't bedridden by any stretch so they can take advantage of all the services they offer. I'm not one for communal living, at least not yet. But taking care of a house is a lot more work and cost than taking care of a condo so much later in life that may be an option. Plus the community can be quite social. Old people can be fun when they want.
But as to your other points about always worrying about your health as you get older, I totally agree. The last time I went to see a doctor was in 2019 when I dropped a bathtub on my left thumb. Pic is of the bandage I put on at work and a bag to keep it from dropping blood on the new wood floors. It pretty much just burst. My wife said it looked like popped corn. That was at 10am and I didn't make it to the urgent care until 6pm. I don't have insurance and wasn't going to pay hospital prices. A couple of stitches to try and put back the skin that was already starting to heal, a tetanus shot, some bandages, and off I went. Never took the pain medicine they prescribed. Hell, when I get cold or flu like symptoms, I only drink tea with lots of honey and lemon and depending on the time of day, a shot of whiskey. I've come to the conclusion that my body heals very well and the mind can be stronger than the body. I, and many others I have spoken with, have also come to the conclusion that medical doctor's aren't what they used to be. I'll leave it at that.

Jorgé, the youngest, died of a heart attack about ten years ago. He was an obese, lazy smoker with uncontrolled diabetes.
The other three all died within the past three years, in their mid to late 70s. My father and his twin brother were both long-divorced and had been living different communities in Florida for years, suffering from moderate dementia. (My father forgot how to speak English in his later years.) The oldest, José, had been widowed for many years, and was living alone in a community near Bullhead City, also in a deteriorating mental state.
That's just not something which appeals to me. I see no benefits to living long enough to have both my body and my mind degrade to the point where I can't climb a flight of stairs or carry on a normal conversation. We have shitty old-age genes in this family.
Palestinian Authorities Cancel Christmas in Bethlehem
“Bethlehem Municipality crews announced the dismantling of Christmas decorations installed several years ago in the city’s neighborhoods and removing all festive appearances in honor of the martyrs and in solidarity with our people in Gaza.”

I told my sons that when I can't wipe my own ***, I want to be put down. My oldest asked "Can you wipe your own *** now?"
I decided I'd post this here...
Not quite a year ago, I purchased a Wilwood 120-9703 Dynapro caliper for $168. Today, they're $256.
Wilwood 160-12283 11.75 disc, $89 in Feb 22. By April 23, they were $120.
Wilwood BP-20s for the Dynapros (a good wet track pad). I was paying $66 not that long ago. They're $117 now.
Black Friday not considered.
FJB's handlers.

Republicans’ views of the economy are completely detached from reality
It’s beyond doubt that partisanship plays a key role in what people tell pollsters about the economy.Boost Czar
