Meanwhile in children's literature:

While I have no problem with prostitution in general, I do take issue with teaching children about it, just because you're a disgusting pedophile and you want to normalize your awful behavior.

My new hobby: seeking out people on Facebook who are offended by trivial things, and thanking them for being offended, as this affirms my existing prejudices:

I'm a bit saddened to see that people on the right-thinking side of the spectrum have begun using words like "destroyed" and "wrecked" and "ruined" to mean "I said a few words to someone I disagree with."

This cheapens all dialogue.

Some of the stuff that shows up makes me wonder how you folks deal with some of the stupidity at work, particularly from people fresh out of college with a degree that makes other assume they have some basic level of professional knowledge.

I finally blew a gasket a couple of days ago after attempting to deal with what is arguably the stupidest college graduate with a mechanical engineering degree that I have interacted in 40+ years.
I tried for about two weeks to educate this idiot on a couple of basic principles of pressure vessel design.

One being that if you insulate a vessel the temperature on the inside face and the outside face of the insulation is different. The primary reason for insulation in the first place is to insulate. Simple concept.

The second is that if you utilize supporting stays the resulting required thickness of the assembly can be decreased. Think a load bearing stud wall and you get the idea.

I utilize a commercial program to do the calculations to design a pressure vessel and the program kicks out a few hundred page report to give all the little specific thicknesses and dimensions and flags any deficiencies. You address the deficiencies and when you have a clean report with accurate input the resulting report is utilized to certify the vessel for a particular pressure-temperature rating and a minimum service life.

This village idiot engineer refused to accept the 304 page report because it did not match the one line thickness calculation that he had previously performed on a cylinder.
We spent about 6 hours over the course of two weeks going over every area of concern that he had with him simply refusing to concede that he was in any way incorrect.
I very patiently explained how your gas temperature and your mean metal temperature are not the same and how support bracing can reduce the required thickness of a cylinder.
In essence he wants to utilize a 19" thk. cylinder where a 5 1/2" thk. cylinder is sufficient.

Since he is employed by a third party who was paid for by the customer to review and accept the design I finally had to go to the customer and throw up my hands and tell them what an idiot they are paying $200 per hour to.

Just had to vent cause it has been a perfect example of dealing with someone just fresh out of college.

Yeah, sounds like a shoe-in as a spec writer. Probably took and got an A in gender studies classes.

He's going to build 19" thick cylinders for everyone, and make Mexico pay for it fund them with a tax on "fat-cat Wall Street speculators" (eg: literally everyone who has a 401k or an IRA.)

Yea right, lots of jokes but no sympathy.
I am scheduled to talk to his boss who is not an engineer later today.
We will have to see what direction it goes from there.
Just hope it is someone who can understand some basic design concepts but not hopeful at this juncture.
My practical argument for the uneducated is this,
"Any idea why there are expensive programs out there to run 300 page reports when one calculation on a napkin gives the correct answer?"
Maybe it is a good argument and maybe it is not but I am hoping to get the chance to actually make that point.

I got the Trump references there Joe. Smooth, real smooth.
Poor old Trump.
He is the butt of every joke thought up in the last couple of years.

If I was inclined to waste more of my time I could work up a quote based on a 19" thk. shell and submit it to the customer as a cost adder but that would probably make it seem like I buy into this idiot's crazy idea.

As someone who has worked on both sides of this business, sometimes the correct answer to that question is "because the such-and-such contract requires a 300 page report, and you and I both know that [name of bureaucrat] isn't going to believe that a single page of calculations scrawled on the back of a wine list from The Spearmint Hippo can possibly be correct."

Nah, AOC and Sanders are providing much more fertile soil in which to plant insults these days.
