Worked with the Navy and DOD when I worked for a defense contractor. I don't think there is a contractor on the planet that could pay me enough to deal with that headache again.
Some of the stuff that shows up makes me wonder how you folks deal with some of the stupidity at work, particularly from people fresh out of college with a degree that makes other assume they have some basic level of professional knowledge.
I finally blew a gasket a couple of days ago after attempting to deal with what is arguably the stupidest college graduate with a mechanical engineering degree that I have interacted in 40+ years.
I tried for about two weeks to educate this idiot on a couple of basic principles of pressure vessel design.
One being that if you insulate a vessel the temperature on the inside face and the outside face of the insulation is different. The primary reason for insulation in the first place is to insulate. Simple concept.
The second is that if you utilize supporting stays the resulting required thickness of the assembly can be decreased. Think a load bearing stud wall and you get the idea.
I utilize a commercial program to do the calculations to design a pressure vessel and the program kicks out a few hundred page report to give all the little specific thicknesses and dimensions and flags any deficiencies. You address the deficiencies and when you have a clean report with accurate input the resulting report is utilized to certify the vessel for a particular pressure-temperature rating and a minimum service life.
This village idiot engineer refused to accept the 304 page report because it did not match the one line thickness calculation that he had previously performed on a cylinder.
We spent about 6 hours over the course of two weeks going over every area of concern that he had with him simply refusing to concede that he was in any way incorrect.
I very patiently explained how your gas temperature and your mean metal temperature are not the same and how support bracing can reduce the required thickness of a cylinder.
In essence he wants to utilize a 19" thk. cylinder where a 5 1/2" thk. cylinder is sufficient.
Since he is employed by a third party who was paid for by the customer to review and accept the design I finally had to go to the customer and throw up my hands and tell them what an idiot they are paying $200 per hour to.
Just had to vent cause it has been a perfect example of dealing with someone just fresh out of college.
Fun post to read. I build pressure vessels out of fabric, to remain flexible and easily portable. Take that fresh squeezed grad moron and times it by some order of magnitude, when trying to teach these same principals in fabric vs metal..
We have hired many new grad engineers in the past few years and have many interens every summer, it is scary the lack of common sense and practical understanding of things some of them have. The good ones are definitely hard to find and are not always the ones that look good on paper.
If I had to deal with one in a supervisory type role like you, I would probable lose it as well. At least I get to boss them around a bit.
I've been arguing over the last two days with our contractor on basic math. 22.75" is not centered to 48" in case you were wondering. Even moreso when the short side of the wall will get padded ~0.5" more once tile goes in.

I was actually somewhat surprised to learn that it is. These days, if you intentionally give your child chicken pox, there's an excellent chance you'll wind up having a conversation with DCFS.
I had no idea that vaccinating against chicken pox was even a thing until XKCD covered it recently.

The type of food and how it is made, etc. Of course loads of alcohol comes through your pores the day after (if you have never had to work next to someone who tied one on the night before in a hot engine room while everyone was sweating, you have not lived. I'll one up you, . . . that is if you have never been stuck in a small confined air space for any period of time with a thoroughly ripe, brain-addled, homeless person. You get all the BO, plus the added bonus of aged urine and feces. I'd rather lick the cat box clean than endure that again.
yesterday we got behind a bunch of hippies hiking, even outdoors and about 10ft behind, we had to stop and let them go on their way before continuing, because being downwind of them was almost unbearable.
