the companies that had the data, couldn't even use it themselves.

Even if it its deidentifiable, there's a chance that it exists in identifiable form at some point and can be intercepted or stolen.

I've made this point in the past, and I'll make it again...

We've been buying and selling your TV viewing habits for decades. It's gotten much easier since the advent of Dish / DirecTV, "smart" cable boxes, and similar devices. We know what pay-per-view events you bought, what parts of the show you rewinded on your DVR, etc.

Why are people paying attention to this sort of thing only now?

Market research stuff is pretty freaking fascinating.

Companies track everything you buy (say if you only shop at target) and then populate ads to you that are relevant to those things and who they think you are slash what you're interested in. I've read at least one instance where a woman started getting ads and coupons for diapers before she knew she was pregnant. I.e. their algorithm was able to track her purchase history and compare it to others and figure out that that's what was coming...

I find it amusing. I click on something someone posts, and the next ads I see are for something related. I do research on a type of product (say an air compressor), and weeks after I already bought one, the ads are all for air compressors. Laughably too little, to late.

Yes I do believe they will anonymize the data. The telecommunications act still prevents them from selling your individual specific data. It all has to be anonymized and sold in bundles.

You guys are really way late to this party if you are just now freaking out. My company works with "big data" and the amount of **** we track about you visit our sites and what not is astounding. There is nothing overly new that your ISP could sell that is not already being sold about you.

Ghostery and No-Script are plugins/addons you want in your browser if you are serious about cutting down the information that gets collected about you. Also delete your FB account completely, then format your drive, then never visit FB again.

Politicians always fail to deliver everything they hope to accomplish, typically because others are involved in the process. I expect that. My support last year was based upon the perceived danger to our well being by persons who were already selling favors to foreign governments without shame. And for smaller government where possible. In the primaries it was a vote for an outsider because the opposition party was taking its constituents for granted. I still stand behind the decisions for the reasons stated.

But according to much of social media I'm supposed to have voted the way I did because I have something against brown people. So I guess that must be it. I'll be sure to explain that to Fernando over salchicha y huevos this morning.

You're not allowed to enjoy that dish, that's cultural appropriation and I'm offended.

I realize you typed that with tongue firmly planted in your cheek.

However, re: being offended. So what? Be offended. I neither care, nor do I wish to change my behavior/language/attitude because of it. Your being offended makes no difference.
Once people stop caring about offending anyone, we can get on with living our lives like adults, and maybe address actual problems instead of worrying about political correctness.

when the truth doesnt fit your narrative:

FBI Director James Comey Tried To Reveal Russian Tampering Months Before Election

FBI Director James Comey attempted to go public as early as the summer of 2016 with information on Russia’s campaign to influence the U.S. presidential election, but Obama administration officials blocked him from doing so, two sources with knowledge of the matter tell Newsweek.

Well before the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) accused the Russian government of tampering with the U.S. election in an October 7 statement, Comey pitched the idea of writing an op-ed about the Russian campaign during a meeting in the White House Situation Room in June or July.

“He had a draft of it or an outline. He held up a piece of paper in a meeting and said, ‘I want to go forward. What do people think of this?’” says a source with knowledge of the meeting, which included Secretary of State John Kerry, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and National Security Adviser Susan Rice.

But many in the room didn’t like the idea, and White House officials thought the announcement should be a coordinated message backed by multiple agencies, the source says. “An op-ed doesn’t have the same stature. It comes from one person.”

Haji would gang rape and stone that bitch to death for standing just like that in 1/3 of the muslim world. The disinformation and propaganda is deep with these people. It's a shame she's so smart and can't figure that out.
