Talking 99 Sport eBay turbo build

This is my first ever turbo build, and i want to create this thread so i can ask questions without creating a new topic each time and cluttering the forum.

Here is my 99 Miata sport, 175K miles, mostly stock, RB header + RB dual exhaust.

My goals is 220-250HP.

Once parts start arriving i will take pictures and post progress updates.

This build could be an epic fail or success, so stay tuned.

Welcome. Clean Car. Maybe find a used FM2 kit?

From which land do you hail?

Im in Jacksonville, FL

I prefer not to go used, and i actually want to create something myself, and from what i see, most people here are scared of ebay stuff, so i wanted to see if i can make use of the ebay parts and actually make them work.

I already ordered most of the major parts and they should be arriving next week.

MS2E from Rev
1.8L T3 tacotaco manifold
27x5.5x2.5 intercooler
2.25" universal piping + 2.25 to 2.5" 90 degree elbow for throttle body
oil line
same turbo as in MK kit
hks ssqv clone BOV

I still need to decide on injectors (any recommendations)?
leaning toward yellow top rx7/8? enough for 250whp?

And not sure what to do with the stock IAT sensor. i dont see how to mount it into the intercooler piping and make it air tight.

Just get the GM IAT and wire it into the maf wiring harness. You'll be using speed density anyway so that plug will just be unused. You can repurpose the wires from the maf for other functions back to the megasquirt if you intend on using an EBC or whatever.

no way to reuse oem sensor right?

ok. so GM sensor + weld bung after intercooler on cold side. no problemo.

now do i splice the GM sensor into the OEM sensor wires so it can talk to MS2E or do i run all new wires from gm sensor directly to MS?

Just tap a hole in the cold side of the intercooler. That way it's as far away from engine heat as possible.

Wire to OEM sensor wires. It's laid out in the install docs on MSExtra.

Thanks for the replies.

ok going to work on the Miata a bit, this weekend im sorting out all the stupid oil leaks. (cap on rear exhaust side, front main seal etc..) plus new timing belt, new acc belts and new fuel filter.

Might be hard to tell but I tapped my IC up front for the IAT sensor. This way you keep it from heat soaking in the engine bay but, there probably will be a change in temp from the initial exit of the air and the air entering the throttle body. Not sure how much of a delta T there is or if it significant. I have zero hot start issues this way on DIYPNP.

Looking forward to see your progress.

You should also look into getting a Wideband Air Fuel Ratio Gauge and Sensor. I have the Innovate LC-2 Wideband.

Thanks, I am researching widebands and gauges.

Probably will go with LC-2 with no gauge.

what i really want is one multi gauge that will show
AFR
BOOST
IAT
COOLANT TEMP.

from what i understand, the MS2E has a built in boost gauge, and then i will plug in the LC-2 wideband into MS2E via digital input. then get something like multigauge2 and it will show me the above parameters via multigauge2 or similar. but i could be wrong, so if any one has a similar setup please chime in.

Making progress, trying to get to the front main seal to replace it.

pulled plugs, they seem awfully white, LEAN?
last week a fuel line popped off the fuel filter and i was spilling fuel all over the road behind me, until some one stopped me to tell me about it. so engine was probably lean due to lack of oil pressure for 15-20mins. im surprised the car still drove and didnt stall.

I would highly suggest getting a MTX-L or an AEM EUGO with the gauge over one without a gauge. It is nice to be able to verify that TS and the wideband gauge match so you know you are not tuning to the wrong AFR's.

Lean probably due to the lack of fuel.

MTX-L user here; AEM EUGO temps me

I like ebay builds

Try and splurge on EV14 injectors if you can, everyone likes flowforce.

Digital wideband input is awesome, assuming I understand right a gauge won't do you any good, digital is digital and has no voltage offset issues that Shuiend is trying to explain. You can get MTX_L and stuff the gauge somewhere, LC2 is fine though.

Don't worry too much about IAT, you'll probably be changing air density correction enough to not worry about it being little bit off.

I was able to run my miata on stock injectors with the relay pulled, guess tank pressure or siphon power is enough to keep em idling. Strange stuff!

Injectors, i haven't decided yet, but i want 100% plug and play
EV14 sound good. like these:
Flow Force 610cc EV14 Injectors from TrackSpeed?

So far i like Innovate SCG-1 gauge and EBC combo. sounds like it could kill 3 birds with one gauge. AFR, Boost and give me EBC function.

It came with the car and could be yours for a low price of one Million dollars.

Why not megasquirt EBC? I'm cheap and that looks expensive.

Those are the injectors though, I like them more than rx8's.
