A lap of a local road course. Lead and follow with crappy (overheated and greasy) 195/50-15 all season radials on 15x5.5 steelies. It was probably 6/10ths driving (short shifting, not braking hard, coasting...) but when pulling off the track after 15 minutes the coolant temp was 100°C and the IAT was 31°C! Not too bad for a stock radiator.
In front is a 99 sport driven by a CS national champ and in front of him is an SM2 'vette.
Also, wheel hop may be gone. I'll start a new thread and post pictures on that one.

No leaks, no cracks..... knock on wood! It's been getting abused very regularly, 2-4 autox's a month plus street driving. I'm really asking for something to go wrong, but I have yet to tighten a bolt. Maybe I better go check all of them right now.
There was/is a semi minor issue. I have a slight knock under heavy load, probably due to carbon buildup. You can't really hear or feel it, it's only on the oil pressure gauge. I'm going to rig up a water drip to take care of this.

I've been too lazy and I was going to wait until something broke before redoing the exhaust. (knock on wood again...) It is still the same open dump wastegate exhaust.
In that video (and on that track) I was trying to keep it quiet by short shifting and feathering the gas. The track had noise limits. There were no db meters out but I was told by many that I had the loudest car when I opened it up. There are a couple spots in the video that the wg is wide open.
In an open area it isn't that loud. If you are next to another car, wall or city driving it does get a lot of attention.

Not sure if this should go here or in the media section... just thought it might be interesting to compare this autox video to the one on the previous page. The difference in the car setup now is the 6sp, water injection coming on at 3psi, boost controller set up better but still around 12-13psi here and the used R comp tires have about 140 runs on them compared to a lot less before. There is a lot of shifting with the 6sp/4.10. I never drove the course well or even shifted in the right places but you get the idea. I was called for 2 cones, I think I hit 5 which is a new record for me!
At the end of the back straight the shift light came on at 7100 in 3rd gear. The rev limiter is set at 7400 but due to the bumps the peak was over 7800.
The passenger has the fastest local SM2 car which is a turbo S2k that traps the 1/4mi at 122mph.

almost two year update
Since the last update there have been no problems I can remember. The Chinacharger is still going. I plan on running it to failure, however long that takes. I have set up three stage boost control, ZX-Tex may have already covered it. I'm able to run on wastegate, ecu controlled EBC (with dash mounted **** to vary between 8-15psi) and a ball/spring MBC. All this works with one solenoid, a couple of switches and a big ****. I'm happy with it.
The chassis now has 274k miles and the 96 1.8 (with JB Welded key/pulley) has around 203k miles. The 6 speed probably has 185k-190k on it. Average gas mileage has gone from 26-27mpg to 25-26mpg. I think I'm driving worse and the compression can't be going up.
Haven't been down the 1/4 mile in a while, need to go back soon. Here is some recent autox footage just to prove that it's still running. BTW, on the rev limiter in 3rd gear is 75-76mph.

When it happens I'll post pictures and if we're lucky, video! Odds are that I'm going to put rods on the ground and pistons on the moon before the Chinacharger gives up.
I have an insurance policy - I picked up a 99 motor to build.
More like a poster child! I don't think I ever posted how little this setup cost (for the potential power level), most wouldn't believe it.

The knockoff bov leaked from day one then had catastrophic failure. The wg had issues with the diaphragm and just acted weird.
Knockoff bov and wg were around $110 shipped each. Real 2nd gen HKS SSQV was $190 shipped. Real Tial 38mm was $210 iirc.
The chinacharger, ic, cheap silicon connectors and T clamps are all hanging in there. The cheap thin wall 'guaranteed to break into a zillion little pieces' tubular stainless exhaust manifold has been flawless too.
I sound like a broken record, but these are just my experiences, YMMV.

HAHA , alright thanks for the heads up on the ebay wastegate, i actually saw the same one you had going for $75 shipped now but i guess i,ll save my self the hassle and go with a tial WG, i too have also had my share with ebay BOV's and they suck butt, leak no matter what like you said.
i,ll take my chances with the ebay turbo too, its been holding up for you so why not give it a try eh? only about $150 shipped.

Take the picture from post #12, add an intercooler, a plastic cold air area (not really a box) and a lot of dirt and grime. I go offroad almost every day and never clean the car. My setup is not pretty. Most people that look under the hood wonder how it runs at all.
