Elaborate on suspension mods. I don't think slicks alone are going to do it. You're going to need weight transfer. Miata's are very poor at it.

Without upgrading the drivetrain now, I think it is dumb to put slicks on the car. Unless you buy another car to have as a back up ride.

Here is a company which supplies conversion kits to place a Cadillac CTS diff into a Miata: http://www.v8roadsters.com/ FlyinMiata is now a vendor for them: http://flyinmiata.com/index.php?dept=115 The nice thing about the package that these guys sell is that you can keep your Miata hubs with their 4x100 pattern.

What kind of transmission are you planning to use to get 500 HP from the flywheel to the diff?

450hp with a Link piggyback?? That doesn't sound right for some reason.

You should note that flywheel HP and wheel hp are two different things. He's refering to flywheel HP. If you do a custom rear end setup, the Lincoln Mark VIII's have a the ford aluminum 8.8 IRS suspension. (same setup as a Cobra Mustang). Would be a bullet proof rear end. And the automatic in those cars is the strongest ford ever made for a 4 speed.

They seem cheap everywhere but my local area. Hopefully after all the work required to even get it in there it will prove to be strong enough. Unfortunately if it does hold up, something else in the drivetrain will most likely start breaking.
