B-W isn't the only one having issues with ti-al turbine wheels. Porsche is recalling its ti-al equipped Panameras and Cayennes for turbine wheel failures:

2011-'12 Porsche Panamera Turbo, 2012 Cayenne Turbo Recalled, Stop-Sale Order Issued

lol!
That's awesome, thanks for sharing.

Well it looks like M.net is right. Superchargers are the only way to go.

I agree, innovation is terrible, nobody should ever try to improve on the status quo.

I think most of the people on here are actually pretty stoked about the new technology and give props to BW for stepping up their game. This design is HUGE for the turbo industry and will force other companies to improve their designs to compete. Personally, even after knowing about this hiccup (and knowing that its going to be taken care of.) I'm still excited to see where this design change is going to push the turbo industry. Sure this is unfortunate for consumer and business alike but this is life and it happens.

Unfortunately when BW says things like this in their marketing videos:
EFR Turbo Series from BorgWarner Turbo Systems - YouTube
it makes the mentioned series of events a little harder to swallow.

soviet 07-21-2012 01:32 AM

lol, that video is great.

my question is... if only the small frame turbos are affected, why are ALL EFRs are out of stock in the whole country?

They cant make them fast enough, but it seems like their manufacturing capabilities arent that good. I say that because if they were well setup they would come back in stock in spurts of a handful every week, rather than ALLOFIT in september.

When people read speculation like this, the company gets a bad rep. It may seem like it but it may not be the case. maybe the delay is completely unrelated to their production capability or the quality of their process. I haven't toured their plants so i don't know.. This raises another question though. Why does BW allow their customers of failed products to speculate by keeping them in the dark? This seems like a poor business strategy to me but i am no expert.

Sierra Sierra Evo > turbo Miata

Leafy 07-21-2012 11:28 AM

Well the 2nd part is speculation. The first part is not. The last report I heard from them was that they were unable to keep up with demand which is why they are out of stock. Though that report also mentioned that they were being made to order if you ordered one.

I'm just going to post the whole email because this is fuсking mindblowing

subject: Re: EFR6258 turbine wheel failure

Hello Lenny,

We contacted Borg Warner about your turbo and the turbine wheel disintegrating. Although we agree that it is a default in the Gamma-Ti turbine wheel, Borg Warner does not and after talking to them it is clear they are not going to cover it under the warranty. We disagreed with them on this conceding that the Gamma-Ti turbine wheel is what has been causing the delay of the EFR’s . They view the turbine wheel damage as impact related and not covered under warrantee. We are happy to still take the warranty steps if you still wish to try but can assure you they will not accept it.

As a seller we like to make it up to you the best we can and offer you a discount on a new EFR at our cost when they come in. We do feel that you might be better off looking into a Garrett GTX-R Dual BB turbo instead and will also offer you a discount on that too. We believe that you will be much happier with the GTX and will enjoy it for years to come.

Please let me know what you would like to do and I will be happy to help you and answer any questions that you may have.

Braineack 07-24-2012 12:46 PM

hey lenny.

remember when you broke your turbine wheel when the pavement impacted it?

soviet 07-24-2012 12:50 PM

I'm going to rip BW a new -------. They have picked the wrong customer to ---- with.

- 2 blown up EFRs, identical failure
- Garrett was ready give out a free GTX
- Drove over 500 miles since the last turbine failure. If it was something in my engine, it wouldn't be running right now.

TurboTim 07-24-2012 12:52 PM

That's insane and a bad move on Borg Warner's part. If it's true and not just Himni saying it is. A few times we have had our dealers say we refuse to warantee a part when in fact the dealer never contacted us and just wanted to sell another kit 'at cost', to our great detriment on the online community.

And Garrett was/is going to give you a GTX-R?

I was thinking this same thing as soon as he said he would sell you another unit "at cost". I would get in contact with BW directly if I were you to verify this. I find it suspicious.
