The manufacturer of those 58mm turbines used the wrong titanium alloy, did not follow protocol - simple as that. They are no longer a supplier as a result. Just because you do not know anyone who received an EFR doesnt mean they werent shipping. If you believe the precision product is good enough for you to run on your car, go for it!

I'm guessing I'm one of the latter ones with this issue.

I really do hope your replacement/exchange goes smooth and drama free.

Because 9 times out of 10 it doesn't

Right now the only thing I fear is waiting for months on a new turbo due to supply issues. I don't think there will be issues with replacement considering the information I just dug up.

soviet 06-04-2012 12:45 PM

The last 6 digits of my serial number is 110025. I think it's safe to say my turbo is #25.

18psi 06-04-2012 12:49 PM

Have them replace it with #69

So what did full race / borg say?

I called them then emailed the picture/video.

Thank you for the info. I'll get this over to production and get back to you shortly.
I'll call them back later if I don't hear by like 5pm (3pm their time).
Basically I want to know if I can make my (already paid for) track day June 23-24.

Just to update this thread.

I talked to Jon @ Full Race yesterday and promised me an RMA. I called him up again today, and sure enough, he sent me the RMA information. Now I just have to send the broken turbo. That's taken care of and went very smooth (so far!). Expected delivery date for replacement is Mid-August - a date which I'm pessimistic about. I'm a consultant, I know how estimates work.

If you read my thread, you know that Bryce offered to sell me his BNIB EFR6258 since his project is taking forever.

So while on the phone with Full Race, I asked - how I would ensure that Bryce's turbo has the turbine wheel issue fixed?

Short answer - you don't. I was told that there have been no new EFR turbos in the country since approximately Fall 2011. That means every EFR 6258 turbo out there is possibly subject to this spontaneous failure. I didn't inquire if this issue affects the larger frame turbos.

What am I going to do? I'm not sure. I'm going to drink a little bit more liquid courage and probably buy Bryce's turbo anyways. I mean, what's another $1500 into a 5-digit budget project, right?

Bryce's turbo is serial 110021. Mine is 110025.

I dunno, I just can't justify 2+ grand on a turbo that an 800 dollar one and 200 dollar wastegate and 200 dollar BOV can perform as good as.

It's fine that you can't justify it, but get your facts right. It's a $1450 turbo, not a $2000 turbo. It doesn't perform "as good" as an $800 turbo - the cheapest Garrett DBB is $1k, and the EFR knocks it out of the park. No Garrett turbo comes close to the same combination of low-end torque and high-end power.

I'm not expecting people to cross-shop them against Chinese turbos, but they are worth every penny of the $1450 BW asks for them.

soviet 06-05-2012 09:08 PM

Also I would like to say that I love EFR to death. Garrett actually sent me an email saying that want to help me out and that a GTX2860R would fit my application. I could do it (probably get a cheap-ish GTX that hasn't been out for 3 months yet). But frankly, I would have a sucky 40-year old technology internal wastegate that wouldn't satisfy my 30psi goals. I would have to get a BOV. I would have to go back to the garage and get dirty.

I just did 5 months of that and I *don't* want to go back. I want to drive my car. Next week. It's glorious. It makes me happy. Sourcing a fabricator to weld a BOV fitting doesn't make me happy. Waiting for parts doesn't make me happy.

I really wish there was more transparency in this issue so at least I could plan for it and be ready. As of right now I'm stuck dead in the water with my only options being
a) bleed money
b) go with a sub-par setup (personal opinion)

I like Garrett and would totally rock the hustler setup. But that means drilling inconel bolts for safety wire. Getting an EWG welded onto my manifold. Getting an EWG pipe welded to downpipe. Getting a BOV. I'm tired. I don't have a lot of money left. I have a house that I just bought and it needs maintenance (for real).

FYI, that's the most accurate date I've heard in months. Last time I talked to FR was in the spring, and they were quoting "4-8 months".
