Yes, that was the One Lap 2014 motor.

It was already sick (down on compression 8% in one cylinder) prior to the event. Just got worse and worse during. Massive blowby, too. Post event compression test showed down 25% in that cylinder and down 10% in adjacent one.

We had originally planned to run a different motor (fresh pro built shortblock) but that one had an oil leak which we did not have time to fix (turned out to be through the girdle)

Subscribed for updates... Was considering an ls swap but I'm on the fence now. Too bad I sold the k20/24 hybrid sitting in my shed a year ago :(

Andy, you should do a dedicated build thread for your car.

Just had a thought, why not use the 1.6 miata flywheel and clutch design for this? It would WAY simply the flywheel that you guys have to have custom made. Even a stock k24 is going to be a lot of engine for the stock 1.8 clutch to handle so you're already into having to use aftermarket clutches. Might as well save weight and MOI by using the 1.6 stuff and make the flywheel easier to boot.

It's spelled weigh. And more surface area makes a huge difference not having to put a stupid heavy pressure plate on a miata.

Good question, and one we considered. We decided to stick with the 1.8L setup for a few reasons:

1) Believe it or not, manufacturing cost was identical between the 1.6 and 1.8 style, due to the size of the piece of aluminum used to make the flywheel.

2) We recommend using a full 1.8 drivetrain to handle the additional torque of the K series, and most customers are using 1.8 cars anyway. Many already own an aftermarket 1.8 clutch so this helps keep their cost down.

3) we like the clutch options for the 1.8L better. Take the Exedy stage 2 clutch for example, which is perfect for a K24. the 1.6 stage 2 is only rated for 152wtq, but the 1.8 is good for 208wtq - perfect for NA K setups.

I've been looking for some build threads on these but haven't turned up much. I sure hope they start popping up soon so I can get reading and learning!

weigh simplify the flywheel doesnt make any sense.

The racers who arent running twin disks or anything else with a non-standard flywheel seem to favor the 1.6 flywheel even if they're making big boy horsepower like bundy. Getting a heavier pressure plate is a good thing on the miata, the stock plate is just way too soft of a pedal. Even my 300ftlb rated clutch has a lighter pedal than I would prefer in a racecar its nice on the street though.

That heavy pressure plate isn't nice on the thrust bearings though.

Oh and I got a picture from Kmiata of this,

It looks like a Suzuki cappuccino 3 cylinder in there, compared to a BP with all the crap on it.

Intake manifold will fill the void...at least the one's I'm looking at.

Custom plenum style by either Hayward or Xcessive...or ITBs with custom airbox.

I think it looks at home in it's natural habitat.

Forgot I snapped this at the Dyno Day last month.
