The research I've found on this says to do this on a car if you never plan on ever painting it with automotive paint. Once you use rustoleum you are stuck with it. Apparently automotive paint and rustoleum do not work well with each other. Once you use Rustoleum you would have to strip it to the metal in order to use automotive paint. I'm sorry if this was already mentioned.

Or at least sand back down to base coat. Paints don't have a conscience, they want likes with likes. Meaning, if using a SOLVENT based paint stay with SOLVENT based. Newer water based paints are the only thing that will be affected here. Then, just getting the primer base coat with water based solvent would be recommended.
Getting ALL the wax off prior is key. Sanding just moves it around, it needs to be chemically removed. It is easily done.

Interlux brightside black, after laying on a thinner coat and sanding with a higher grit, i managed to get a mirror finish, but there are still some roller marks showing through,

Im going to do another 2 thinner coats, and then sand with 2000, and polish with poorboys ssr 3.0, bevause 2.5 takes forever to get the mirror shine i want

Yeah, the interlux black is pretty difficult to get a god shine out of. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get a mirror shine out of my hardtop. I guess I'll have to try again.

I found that i had to spend a fair bit of time with the polisher to get a good shine. Before i was using a shitty little polisher and getting no where, I went and brought one similar to a porter cable with proper pads, and started getting better results.
