So I never had to change socks or fuel filters on my Subie when I was running E85. Why do people feel that you need to change these on the Miata when swapping over?
It's not mandatory, but good practice.
I guess that makes sense. I will have to think about adding that to my project list. Hope to fire my 1st E85 tank tomorrow night. It will be nice to be back in a turbo car running corn.
In the mazdaspeed world T6 doesn't like e85. People run Penz Platinum when they're on corn. FWIW.
I know it's apple to oranges, but on the HPFP T6 + e85 creates black tar buildup, when people ran PP there was less/no tar. Not the same for a miata, but since you'll get some dilution no matter what it might be worth it to switch oils.
In the Subie world people run T6 and never have a problem with E85. Most of the built subies coming out of my buddies shop are on E85 and 90% of the modded subies in the metro seem to be running T6 (because we get it at $15 a gallon). I have never heard of any issues with the gas and oil. This statement confuses me too.
I ran E85 in my car for a year and a half, always used T6 and had zero issues with build up. When using E85, oil contamination is going to happen...just increase the frequency of your oil changes and it'll be fine.

So, I normally run T6, but I was having weird issues which I attributed to the thickness of the oil. Don't get me wrong, it's a great oil, it cleaned **** out real nice, but I noticed my oil pressure gauge wasn't really moving (stuck at 60psi constantly, yes aftermarket gauge), and I was blowing oil through the turbo really bad. Like, coming out of my BOV bad.
I put vacuum on my crank case a bit better (was venting PCV to atmo before, tied both sides of the valve cover into the vac now) and switch to a 5w30 mobile 1 (yes, i know it breaks down quicker, and isn't quite as nice, but I change my oil pretty frequently) and both of those issues went away.
That said, I think I'll pick up a set of DW800s and call it good. They're only $60 or so more than the others that I was going ot get, and they're 100% rated for corn which I like.
I'm fairly familiar with the process of retuning and all that by this point.. I've done 4 different MS installs, and swapped injectors on 2 cars after the MS install.

I've been on E85 for about a year, integrated flex fuel sensor, too, but not on MS. I'm using FIC880's (more like 840cc in truth), and I'm at 65% duty cycle at about 275whp per Virtual Dyno.
Black gummy residue is a result of petroleum solids dropping out of solution as the atomized E85 mist passes the end of the hot injector. It'll make injectors sticky if not cleaned out manually or by running a tank of pumpgas every couple of months. That's the easiest way to keep everything nice and clean.
Edit: I've never had a problematic amount of the residue on this or my previously converted turbo car, but plenty of guys I know have.
