I've been keeping an eye on what people pay over on mnet. Average savings off of MSRP are ~$1500 for sports, ~$3000 for clubs, and about $4000 for a maxed out GT RF. I paid 27300 before TTL for a base club. I don't have much experience buying new cars, so ymmv.

Good to know.

When I get ready to pull the trigger, they'll likely have to bring one in. What they have on the lots around here (only two Mazda dealers in the OKC area) are either:

GT (no GT-S package) or GT RF and auto. No desire for auto or RF.
Club with Brembo/Recaro package.

There are Sports around here too. They are all either white or black, and far less numerous than the upscale models. The price delta gives a lot of money to buy the bits I actually want.

FWIW, Beaker had an OSG in it when we turned it into an STR car. I don't have any feedback on it prior to that (before my time).

emilio700 03-27-2019 12:28 PM

Yup, Beaker had an OSG for most of its life. OEM Auburn is a crude, cheap to manufacture and hot running diff. Better than nothing but the OEM vs OSG is like comparing a 2002 flip phone to the one on your hand.

Yet another reason to seek out a Sport.

emilio700 03-27-2019 01:06 PM

I should also point out that on top of being a hot running diff design, the ND cut the fluid capacity in half compared to the NA/NB/NC. This to reduce weight. Baked diffs in hot weather HPDE are not out of the question.

This is why based on your testing, minimum of engine oil cooler, and only spring/fall track days unless I have the FM or LRR trans/diff coolers installed.

That's info given to us from LRR (Long Road Racing) back in 2015 after initial testing determined the cars would need diff and trans coolers. LRR makes the GCC (MX5 Global Cup Car).
Our experience confirmed.

So far the only issue I've had is that the headrest squeaks against the roll bar hoop cover like a mofo. Anyone come up with a solution? It seems like maybe a little Teflon tape or similar might do the trick.

Blackbird 04-28-2019 01:18 PM

You mean the factory hoop or an aftermarket bar?
The loop part of Velcro tape works well for eliminating noises while being easy on the rubbing surface.

I found someone on Amazon that sells really short rolls of UHMW tape, so I think I'll give that a whirl. It's like $7, so why not.

Yeah, it's OEM seat vs OEM roll hoop cover. When it's cold outside and the car is cornering, the top of the seat headrest is rubbing against the top of the plastic roll bar hoop cover. It's startlingly loud- like lift the throttle because something is wrong loud. This will likely only affect tall people in cold climates, as you have to have the seat reclined back so it rubs, and it needs to be pretty cool weather.

Firsties!

Not prepping this one for track, so no roll bar. Plan is:
300/150 Xida ACE with touchscreen
OFT reflash
17x9 Charcoal 6UL
245/40/17 Conti ECS
Clear bra on front, and rockers
color correct/ clay the rest them ceramic coat
carbon duck tail
Vary style front lip

Asked the dealer to not attach the front plate, not wash it. Decided to leave the vinyl film on to deliver to the Aerowerkz that does our vinyl work.
The guys here the shop think the 17x9's and 245's will ride too rough. I think the ACE will take the edge off. The OEM Club suspension is a bit nervous as it is.

wackbards 07-10-2019 12:43 AM

Congrats! I ended up installing the Paco seat rails, and they gave me some much needed knee clearance for my left knee. For ~$100, you might find it a nice mod for a DD. 100% reversible if you decide you don't like it.

emilio700 07-10-2019 01:33 AM

Seat goes back far enough for me. I'm pretty lean so my hips are right up against the backrest. The little bit of extra reach with the telescoping steering column also puts the wheel in a good position for street. For track work I would want a steering spacer but since I'm not going to put mine on the track I'm going to leave it as is.

turbofan 07-10-2019 02:32 AM

For the record I am fully in support of 9s and 245s, because it will look perfect, and that's important.

Stock exhaust with this? I'm curious about your thoughts on the benefits of a tune, and the reliable limits of power adders. I know, I know- old ground, but you've busted ND transmissions, and you and I both have street '19's...

Godless Commie 07-12-2019 08:35 PM

Regional manager of Mazda Turkey just told me about this today...

221 Hp!

New ND Mazda MX-5 Tuning Pack Gives 221bhp At 7800rpm, No Turbo In Sight

BBR GTI's new Super 220 package or the recently updated ND MX-5 lifts the power to 221bhp without using forced induction

https://images.cdn.circlesix.co/imag...-rear-2400.jpg

You can’t help but admire Mazda for the changes it made to the updated ND MX-5. The Japanese company opened up the car’s 2.0-litre, naturally-aspirated inline-four and popped in lighter pistons and con-rods and new valve springs, all in the name of increasing power without resorting to forced induction.

Proper N/A tuning in this day and age is a rarity, but for anyone wanting a 2019-onwards ND MX-5 with more than 181bhp, BBR GTI has a solution. A solution which still doesn’t involve turbochargers or superchargers.

https://images.cdn.circlesix.co/imag...front-2400.jpg

The Brackley-based firm’s new Super 220 package for the MX-5’s fettled SkyActiv-G engine bumps the power up to a handy 221bhp. That’s a commendable power output to extract from a relatively small N/A engine, and it’s developed at 7800rpm. In comparison, the standard unit makes peak power at 7000rpm and tops out at 7500.

The torque gains are slightly less dramatic - the 220 makes 166lb ft, which is a boost of 15lb ft or so. It develops peak twist 500rpm lower than the stock car, however, at the 4350rpm mark.

https://images.cdn.circlesix.co/imag...ngine-2400.jpg

The kit consists of a custom four-into-one stainless steel exhaust manifold, a cold air intake, a K&N high-flow air filter, a Starchip ECU remap and a reworked top end. The latter part of the conversion involves fitting new camshafts, valve springs and retainers.

It’s £2895 plus VAT to have the package fully fitted at BBR’s HQ in Brackley, or £2235 for the parts alone.

https://images.cdn.circlesix.co/imag...6fc118723f.jpg

If you want something that’s cheaper and a little less involved, BBR also has a ‘Super 200’ pack available. It has all the same bits as Super 220 minus the overhauled top end, giving 202bhp at 7300rpm and 165lb ft of torque at 3950rpm.

It’s a slightly wallet-friendlier £1445 plus VAT fitted or £1245 for just the components.

Stock exhaust is fine with me. Has a bit deeper tone than the ND1. I'm not after maximum power at all. It's whatever I can do while keeping it a nice quiet comfortable street car. I'm sure there will be more power to be had with exhaust system mods, but always at the expense of more noise.

To the best of my knowledge, no one has broken an ND2 transmission N/A yet.

ND2 RF vs ST jiggle-off!

A few short, easy drives in my 30AE ST before dropping it off for paint correction, clear bra and ceramic coat. Brief, easy drive in Sonny's 30AE RF.
The Bilstein shocks on the club feel like the either base gas pressure is too high, volume too low, or perhaps the valving is completely linear. Maybe all three. Too much high speed compression damping generates quivers through the car on rippled pavement.
Base shocks much less jiggle. MSM feels the same way to me, but less severe than the ND2. It's a Bilstein thang.

In the informal jiggle scale, 1 being buttah, 10 being "This is giving me a headache".
ST - 5.5
RF top down - 4
RF top up - 2

Windnoise much higher RF with top down compared to ST top down. To me, this shows the car was engineered from scratch and optimized for the ST, the RF coming along later with some compromises.
Or not. ST still amazes me how quiet it is on the highway. Easily hear folks in bluetooth calls, sound system doesn't need to be cranked. My ND1 was actually less thrummy with top down than top up. An area of the fabric behind and above drivers head wold vibrate. Put your finger on that
spot to dampen the vibration and drop like 5db. A tiny piece of heavy vinyl or fabric bonded to that spot would probably fix it. Don't know if ND2 has that same buzz from the top because I haven't driven with the top up yet. :)

Sonny's gorgeous RF. I think its sexier than my ST. Until I get ACE and 9's on mine anyway :)

Xida ACE with 300/150 rates (50% higher than stock). Riding on 17x9 6UL, with 245/40 Conti ECS. Ride height in this pic is 30mm below OEM (Club). Even with the much bigger, heavier tire and 50% more spring rate it rides better than the Club suspension. Less "busy" over rippled pavement yet handles better when flung into a turn.

Congrats. Such a please car to drive and look at. I'm loving it.

Sonny and I did the same thing as you. Left all the wraps on, unwashed, no plates installed, straight to the detailer. So worth it. Only thing that will ever touch the panels on mine is high pressure soapy water, de-ionized rinse and a clean microfiber towel to dry it off.
If you are going to run those wheels, you can get the coating on them too. Makes it much easier to keep them clean. Sonny and I know a place to get cool aftermarket wheels for ours :)

Here in California they're starting to enforce front plates. Got a fix-it ticket for it last week. There are a variety of tow hook boss front plate gizmos on Amazon, ebay, etc. A few are offset which allows the body color plug to stay in place. No holes in nose that way.

DeerHunter 08-30-2019 11:06 PM

Thanks Emilio. I think of this as my other 949-inspired car (the first being my kick-ass MSM with Xidas). I can't wait to get properly acquainted with it. It's gonna be a fun road trip!

DeerHunter 09-10-2019 01:09 AM

So my son and I picked up our 30AE this afternoon. I've managed to keep this a secret from him for nigh on six months and surprised him after picking him up from school. Once we got to the detailer, I handed him a a special t-shirt to put on. He gave me a funny look but it was all worth it once I took him into the presentation room.

Time for an update: I now have just over 700 km on the odo (mostly local commuting) and close to the 1K break-in mileage (kilometerage?). Then it will be an early oil change, pack the trunk and head off to Miata Reunion. I haven't caned the engine yet (currently up to a self-imposed limit of 6K) but I'm very impressed with just how smooth and torquey it is. One can easily trundle around town in 4th or 5th gear and squirt around traffic with no effort at all. Obviously it doesn't have the mid-range rush of my old '93 but what that would be asking a bit much from a normally-aspirated 2.0 litre. Still, the car is a hoot to drive and I can't wait to be able to properly thrash it on a back road.

A few other observations: The Recaros are wonderful - comfortable and supportive (the bolsters don't allow any lateral movement at all). They remind me of the factory Recaros in my old 2L 16V GTI which, to this day, are the most comfortable seats of any car I've owned. Steering feel is fine, with a lot more feel and heft than the '16 I test drove several years ago. I wish the steering wheel was a little meatier (the Nardi I retrofitted to my NA was far, far superior). I love the heated seats, keyless entry/start and other conveniences (I run Waze using Android Auto, which is very convenient). The stereo is entirely adequate - not brilliant but also not the suck-fest that some tout it to be. The exhaust note is fine - perhaps a little mellow but that may be fixed fairly soon with a HoM. I love the way the inner coloured door trim flows forward into the Porsche-like fender swells. The headlights are brilliant (in all senses of the word). The interior, particularly the Alcantara touches, makes me smile every time I sit in the cockpit. The brake pedal, while not as direct as my heavily tweaked L.E., is relatively firm and quite progressive. SS brake lines will be installed this weekend, along with front track-worthy brake pads (G-LOC GS-1s were installed as soon as I got the car home), so I'm hoping for a bit more in that department. Oh, and gas mileage is great. I'm getting about 30% better mileage on a completely green engine.

Overall, while I still miss my old car, I'm very happy with the change. To my eye, the ND is gorgeous, the colour is sports-car-appropriate and I find myself opening the garage door just to be able to give it another look. Needless to say, it passes the enthusiast test of whether I look back over my shoulder whenever I walk away in a parking lot. It's a keeper!

wackbards 09-27-2019 07:45 PM

Congrats! Regarding exhaust, I went with the GWR super street single tip with the glass pack insert. After it mellowed in a couple hundred miles, it sounded excellent. However, I recently installed the JBR dif mount, and I'm not as in love with the tone now. Weird huh? The dif mount does help with the ol' rubber band drive train effect though. Think poly dif bushings on a na/nb.

DeerHunter 09-27-2019 10:15 PM

I wonder if, just like a drinker, the exhaust moved passed the mellow stage into just downright annoying (i.e. the JBR mount installation is just a coincidence). It could be a resonance issue, I suppose.

A couple of observations I forgot to add in my above post: The car is nice 'n' quiet with the top up. That multi-layer top does a bang-up job in keeping things civilized. While I find the "tippy-toes" stock wheel/fender gap visually annoying, I'm quite pleased with how well the car rides on our bomb-cratered roads. Some speed bumps can even be taken without slowing much at all. I'll reserve final judgement until I drive the car in anger on a non-Prairie road, but at the moment my inclination to swap out the suspension is much abated. Lastly, and most surprisingly, while top-down wind control is better than my old NA, it's actually not a good as the MSM. Maybe it's the taller/wider windows in the older model that make the difference (windows are always up for me at highway speeds).

Openflash has. Shiv, the owner, even bought his own ND2 to make tunes with. I don’t know who tuned the one wack just posted up. I wish I had more than one E85 station, otherwise I would definitely go for that!

I just bought an Eternal Blue ‘19 RF GT-S as a daily. I love how much quieter it is on the highway! I plan on putting on my old GWR race muffler that is laying around and getting Shiv’s tune for engine mods. Then some lowering springs and some sway bars and it will be my daily for a long time.

DeerHunter 11-07-2019 10:58 PM

Geez, Chili, you've gone from an ND1 (IIRC) to an ND2 ST to a Fiata Abarth and now to an ND2 RF. At least you can tell us which is best.

wackbards 11-07-2019 11:02 PM

That's Shiv's OFT dyno. Base ND2 has been dynoing at ~170 whp. Mufflers are looking to be worth ~5whp, and mid pipe another 5-10 whp. Looks like the headers developed for the ND1 only really pick up some mid range torque on a ND2, but no real top end gains. That's ok with me. The catless headers sound too raw for my taste for a daily. I think a tuned ND2 on corn with a mid pipe & muffler could crack 200 whp.

Geez, Chili, you've gone from an ND1 (IIRC) to an ND2 ST to a Fiata Abarth and now to an ND2 RF. At least you can tell us which is best.

I have had a 2016 Sport, 2019 GT-S, 2017 124 Classica, and a 2018 Abarth 124. I still currently have the Abarth. Now I just got the 2019 GTS RF. I keep trying to buy sensible cars for my daily commute, but I get sooooooo bored with them. I bought a 97 Corolla a month ago that has been getting me 33 mpg average for only 2k, but it kills my spirit to drive it. My ND1 and first ND2 both averaged 35+ mpg even with me doing a top speed test (120+ mph) on the way to work. Every. Single. Day. The Fiats struggle to average 29 mpg even driving them way easier.

The RF is overwhelmingly the choice for a daily that won’t see the track. It is so much quieter. I normally have the stereo (Bose in the Abarth and RF) at 40 in the soft top. In the RF, I run it at about 25. I plan on selling the Fiat after returning it to stock and buying an NC2 as a track car. The RF will be strictly a street car! I will get rid of the Fiat payment and buy the NC2 outright. They are getting down to the 10k mark now.

Openflash has. Shiv, the owner, even bought his own ND2 to make tunes with. I don’t know who tuned the one wack just posted up. I wish I had more than one E85 station, otherwise I would definitely go for that!

I have watched Shiv walk away from to many partly finished projects to ever want to give him my money.

Interesting. Well, it seems to be a one man show so far for the ND2. OVT is out, ECUTEK hasn't done anything, nor has versatuner. Near as I can tell, they haven't even started looking at the ND2.

My 30AE has an OFT and Racing Beat axle back. Made an average of about 4whp more in back to back dynos with the off the shelf OFT stage 1 tune. Most gains above 5500. Throttle response a bit sharper everywhere. 200rpm higher redline (I think). Still getting 25mpg around town and I'm not driving slow.
Might be more gains with a custom tune.
