It's the smaller diameter gear ring that fails on the 1.6L rears. Be it a vlsd, open, clutch type, 1.5way, 2way, 7way, welded, etc. If the ring gear fails in your vlsd rear, 10:1 odds says the diff is still perfectly fine.

real world example:
Rappadan blew through 4 1.6L diffs drifting: Both open, KAAZ LSD, & welded. IIRC all ring failures.
Upgraded to a 1.8L 7" welded rear, increased his power output. Has yet to fail on a full season of drifting.

obviously a confounding variable skewed your analysis. This guy should keep his 6". If it fails, it was probably a fluke, and should get another. I'll sell you mine cheap. $600 for the stronger 6" vlsd. Let me know.
