One of my employees recently retired. Bruce was, in truth, probably my best guy. He'd been here forever, and was a great dude.

Anyway, company policy is that I had to fire him via our online tool:

It really kind of weirds me out that I can fire someone with a couple of mouse clicks.

Even weirder is that second screen where it's prompting me to "Terminate another employee."

I'd rather not.

^ Never mind, I see he was retired 1st... Hopefully

Seriously? I'm not that much of an asshole. I have no problem banning people here in extospace, but I really, REALLY do not like doing it in real life.

True story...

Early on in my career I became one of those low level supervisors. I was told by my boss I had to terminate someone. When he saw that look on my face he said; "look, at the end of today "Bob" won't be here anymore. I can fire him or I can fire you and have another supervisor fire him but at the end of the day the result is the same so let me know how you want me to handle it".

I fired "Bob"

When I left corporate life, at a much higher job level, the stress of terminating someone never went down but I never asked someone in a lower position to take care of it.

Sometimes it is easier than others, but it is never enjoyable.

I ask my bosses to fire me daily.

It must really be tough because I'm still here.

Here I am taking pictures and standing around while my boss gets soaking wet with the pressure washer.

I was chatting with my boss once at a previous job and he related a story where he'd accidentally terminated someone by clicking in the wrong place. Fixing that through HR was apparently a nightmare.

That is just astonishing. I assume that said boss was similarly awful in other ways.

This is the truth.

Heck, there's one guy who I would love to fire. Not because I'm a dick, but because he's lazy, damn near worthless, and a huge drag on morale for the rest of the team. But he's also perfected the art of doing *JUST* enough to comply with union rules, and always has a perfect excuse every time he damages something.

However, I'd still feel bad about it, because he's not a young guy and would likely not be able to get hired anywhere else.

I tend to treat that as an axiom. I wouldn't ask my crew to do anything I wouldn't do myself. And within the boundaries of jurisdiction, I'm usually right there with them when doing heavy / nasty stuff. (Fortunately, there's not THAT much heavy / nasty stuff in TV. Mostly it's weird shit like climbing across structural I-beams 30 feet above the slab at the 105th floor Sears tower, in an area where if you fell into it they'd need a confined-space rescue team with climbing equipment to retrieve the body.)

On the other hand, I am the guy who pretty much always has a coffee mug in hand...

He was. I left 2 years later total of 4 years with them.

I was young and going to school nights but during the day I was a young union member (Steel Workers), rabble rouser and on the negotiating team. I always suspected my supervisor job was the way to get me out of the union (it worked).

If you're like me, you often find yourself thinking "Sure, I guess this ordinary electric pencil sharpener is ok, but what I really could use is a gas-powered turbo pencil sharpener!"

Apparently, others have had this same thought:

These press cars get crushed anyway. It was probably a dealer or someone getting a tour of the car for sales reasons.

Accidents happen.

Unrelated beat down process line at another facility.

Other than "shut the fuck up and post nothing", what the hell do you do when your ex, with whom you parted ways gently and amicably, keeps linking you to photos of her pre-you children?

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5485fec6ef.png

The future is complicated.

(To be clear, I did NOT father this child. It predated me *very* slightly (unknown to me at the time.) And yes, I feel great sympathy for her, despite having no culpability in the matter. Cognitive disability is a hell of a burden to enter life with.)
