Oh i'm not saying you cant polish a turd but at some level the swap becomes much more economical and logical reason. A stock K series makes 200ish hp, Yank the tranny, ecu, and motor and do a direct swap. If you can manage a welder and a cutoff wheel you should easily be able to stuff that in a miata. the kit is the expensive part in the k series swaps.

If you can manage a scalpel and electrocauter, you can easily remove your own appendix. The surgeon and the hospital is the expensive part in appendectomies.

I trust my own ability to fabricate a subframe and oil pan about as much as my ability to remove my own appendix.

Joe, I'll see your 18K and raise you another 18.5K without any turbochargers...
My father (also a car nut) just found a 31K 75 914 that we are resurrecting.
The air-cooled VW stuff is insanely expensive. Raby is sort of King of this stuff and his waiting list is a couple of years long.

The hot ticket for jugs is LN "nickies" A 96mm set with JE pistons will set you back 4k+.
Just pistons, jugs, rings. No German elf to put it together either.

These guys get excited at 150hp!
Miatas are far far cheaper than you can imagine...

A used Porsche 964 engine (260 hp) is worth 37K!
914World.com | FS: 1995 3.6 engine - 17k miles $37.5k
The owner of that is installing Ferrari 3.6L V8 in a 914 and doing a beautiful job.
