I have no idea what mechanism is causing the variation in swing demonstrated in this video clip, but I find it fascinating. Perhaps the rotation of the earth plays a part, but I am confused as to how. Perhaps an engineer, physicist, or educated soul among us could respond?

Same as water going down a sink drain. One way North of the equator, other way South.

The strings on one side are longer. Look up pendulum wave.

Now that makes sense. The video did not make them look like they were different lengths but everything makes sense now.
