So I have this wheel in my collection of things. It came from the 2000 year BMW V12 LMR race car. Does anyone have any idea how much this thing might be worth? I don't imagine too many people out there have such parts from race cars...

AKM semiconductor has a sense of humor:

(from page 23 of the AK4122 datasheet.)

I'd need more information to go by, but chances are its probably worth something to someone.

Seriously, it looked like the helicopter was completely under control and the pilot literally just flew it into the ground.

Dude was in a helicopter in the mountains (thin air)... Power Available vs. Power Required is taught day 1 at flight school. Dude just totally f'ed it away by allowing his rate of decent to overcome the amount of bite the rotors had on the air.

I had followed the reports of this incident through some official channels over the last few weeks, but hadn't seen the video until yesterday. Video confirms everything I'd heard.

So Sam how close was the guy on the ground to getting smashed by the tail rotor? hard to tell how close he was in the video. I noticed they trimmed that part in the slo-mo replay.

Yeah, that's logical. It did sound like the rotor RPM was quite low. I would imagine he was probably trying to pull the collective right up out of the floor.

The elevator plane actually goes directly over the guys head but he is not hit. Nobody on the ground was injured.

Nothing I have read has said anything about a mechanical failure.

You can see in the photos that there is some upward deflection in the rotor system, but that it's nowhere near what you would expect of a bird whose pilot has the collective in his chin... UNLESS the air is so thin that the blades have nothing to bite on. AHEM. I'm 100% confident that the results of the mishap investigation will show 100% pilot error... and since both pilots walked away with minor injuries, we'll certainly know it all very shortly. I wouldn't be surprised if black-box voice recording shows up on the internet within a few months.

Well, he did say system failure. The pilot is part of the system.

One of my all-time favorite aviation-related "oops" videos has to be this one. Make sure you listen to the dialogue between the pilot and the gunner starting at 0:19
