Do you remember what you paid for that unibroue variety pack? I just saw it today at the local distributor...can't remember the price though.

All that amazing stuff and they throw in a Heineken? That stuff tastes like lawn clippings fermented in piss.

Meh...I'm not down with the Blithering Idiot. It's a barley wine...not my bag, baby. I like their (Weyerbacker) Double Simcoe IPA a lot. They make a decent stout too called "old heathen".

1. on draft: Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye.
OMG. This is a delicious hoppy beer with a super long malty finish. I could have had 10... and yes, it's brewed with rye. 2. on cask: Re Ale Extra. Hard to follow #1 but this had a great smell and much milder hop flavor. had some interesting spice notes but wasn't overwhelming. I guess it's a saison? #2 was probably the best italian beer I've ever had. which is not saying much when you consider peroni and birra moretti. I'm gonna say it here: just about every non-beer country (you know: the ones that aren't germany, belgium, usa, GB, Czech, etc.) has what I like to call a "shitty foreign beer". vaguely lagery, fizzy, skunky and mediocre by any measure. I'm talking your japanese, italian, french, and the like. I still can't believe we found an awesome microbrew in Bali, Indonesia. |

I will be in ST. Louis this week.
I will most likely be checking out this place: http://www.ciceros-stl.com/weekly-draft-beers Let me know if there is anything on the draft list that you guys HIGHLY recommend, or if anybody from the St. Louis area would like to stop out and drink a beer, on me. I'll probably try the Unibroue Terrible, I've had Trois Pistoles and loved it...but never had the Terrible. Also never had Shiner Bock which I've only heard about on this forum. I'll probably have Bell's Hopslam or Southern Tier UnEarthly, cause I like that stuff. I might try (cause I've never had) Schlafly Coffee Stout, and Left Hand Milk Stout. |

Left Hand Milk Stout is pretty tasty, give it a try for sure.
Drinking Upslope Brown Ale tonight, from Boulder. Yummy, smooth, malty, hardly any hop bite, goes down waaaaay too easily lol. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1329717727 |
shiner is not a bad beer to drink, hop slam is one of the best beers bells has put out if your into Ipas, if you happen to come across widmer brothers dark saison out there that's one I highly recommend last tkme I was there they at least had it in bottles
|
I'm not a saison fan...I agree with you about hopslam though.
|
that's too bad ended up being the best saison I have tasted
|
shoot I almost forgot about this thread!
My saturday was actually more of a Beerturday. A neighbor had a "barrel aged" tasting. Lets see if I can remember em all: (in no particular order, except I know Dominion was first) Dominion Oak Barrel Stout Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter, Whisky Barrel aged Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout Schlafly Oak aged Barleywine Old Rasputin, Bourbon Barrel Aged imperial stout Heavy Seas Below Decks Oak Aged Barleywine Victory Dark Intrigue (Storm King Stout aged in Jim Beam barrels) Founders Backwoods Bastard bourbon barrel aged ale. New Holland Dragon's Milk Oak Barrel Aged Oh and we ventured over to the beer haus down the street for a draft of hopslam. EDIT: added the founders. |
Old Rasputin is in my top 5 favorite stouts...I bet the bourbon barrel aged brew was f'n awesome!
I never had any schlafly products, but my brother says he picked up a variety pack of it, and that bar I linked in a previous post has like 4 or 5 different schlafly brews on tap. |
the schlafly stuff is good.
list updated to add the Founders. |
y8s have you tried New Hollands Dragons milk? aged bourbon barrel 15% real Damn good
|
Dragons milk is also in my top 5 stouts.
|
well god damn. I asked the host for any I left out... he did not mention the dragon's milk. next time I will demand a tasting list.
we did have that on saturday as well. Actually I think I know why he forgot it... he's keeping a scrapbook (I told him to call it a "flat cellar") of all the beer labels from beers he drinks. Anyway, a few of the google images of the bottle show a silk screened bottle. Not so easy to flatten! list updated. |
dragons milk and old resputin are in my top 5
|
List your top 5 stout's.
I'd say these, in no specific order... Dragon's Milk Old Rasputin Founder's Breakfast Stout (including Kentucky breakfast stout) Young's Double chocolate Stout on nitrogen There is a microbrew pub near me called "the bethlehem brew works" they have "Steelworkers Oatmeal Stout". That stuff is AMAZING and might be my #1. I really need to add Southern Tier Mocha to that list. Actually, I favor pretty much any Russian Imperial Stout, also chocolate or coffee stouts. |

This + vanilla ice cream = mouth orgasm |
your pretty much listing my top ten! i wish the bank would approve my loan so I van get my microbrewery started in time I guess
|
I'm at my brothers house about 15 minutes outside of St.Louis...he picked up a variety 12 pack of Schlafly. You guys are on crack if you think this is "good beer". In PA we have a variety case called "Dundee" and it reminds me of Schlafly because it's a cheap excuse for a good quality microbrew.
I mean, it's OK, but it's not something I'll brag about when I get home. There's a reason why they sell this stuff at Target in the cooler next to "Shock top" which is a budweiser product and is the absolute worst excuse for a micro brew ever to hit the market. |
ok maybe the barrel aging helps.
I thought I had had another one of theirs on draft somewhere and recall it was good but I forget what it was. |
I wonder if you guys know about Chambly, in province of Quebec. I used to live there.
There's a beer pub there called ''bedondaine et bedon rond'' that has a collection of over 15000 unopened beers. It's impressive. The owner, Nicolas, brew over 15 differents beers during the year with around 10-15 seasonal brews that come and goes during the year. If you guys like baltic porters, les 3 mousquetaires brew a 2010 gold medalist in PQ called ''Porter Baltique'' is excellent. Also the brewer ''Dieu du ciel'' is a 15 minute car drive in Montreal. They are renowned from the péché mortel (expresso imperial stout 9.5%, aphrodisiaque vanilla, cocoa stout and my favorite L'exquinoxe du printemps is a maple syrup scotch ale, dont think too sugary on that one, it is sublime. I happen to own a couple to those beers perfectly aged in dark, cool environment. If you guys want to trade beer Quebec vs USA in well packaged boxes, im willing to trade the experience with open minded people that likes to suggest US brewed beers. I'd like to try more of those imperial russian stouts, barley wines and other ''tough'' beer you guys brew. Contact me. I can try to find Quebec brewed beers for you, especially Dieu du ciel. |
I stand corrected...Peche Mortel, is most likely at the top of my stout list. I forgot about that, but I knew I was forgetting something important...that $hit is soo good. I was at a bar, and I was sketchy about buyin it cause it was like $9 a bottle...the bartender saw what my tastes were for the night, and he said "I'll tell you what, try it, and it you don't like it, I'll pay for it." Needless to say, I LOVED IT.
|
here, it sells for 2.99$ at the grocery store 12.99 for a sixxer. The flavor development in american brewed dark beers tends to become richer and diversified, the oak aged beers are among my favorites.
|
Tonight I drank a Left Hand Milk Stout. It was very smooth, similar to Youngs double chocolate stout, but better...
Then I drank a Six Row Vanilla Porter...AMAZING. It wasn't watery like most porters seem to be, yet it wasn't thick, and it had a strong vanilla extract flavor to it...I really enjoyed this brew. Six Row is brewed in St. Louis, MO, which I really enjoy considering Schlafly is brewed in St. Louis and I think it's crap. I also tried a Arcadia Loch Down scotch ale. This was a great ale, as I like the sweetness of a scotch ale. |
Tonight, I drank a Rigor mortis from dieu du ciel. The malt has a good balance between acid and suggar for a dark beer. I also had an Eisbock from l'alchimiste from Joliette, PQ. On of the final preparation step of that beer is freezing it then removing a percentage of water in the beer from the icing process. It becomes thicker and richer from behing ''deluted'' from water. Heavy stuff aged a year...9.5%.
|
something i realized on saturday about tasting beers... I think trying to taste more than 3 or 4 is a waste. It's hard to remain objective and even harder to remember them all after too many. they all sort of smoosh together in your brain.
|
I notice that happens if I drink the same kind of beer. For instance, if I drink like 4 stouts, I can't make an accurate description of the difference in flavoring. If I drink a stout and then a water, then something like an imperial IPA; my palate is cleaner and I can distinguish differences better. However, if I go from a stout to an ipa or whatever (mix types of beer) I usually get all messed up in my stomach.
My best luck is if I'm gonna drink a bunch of beers, stick to the same beer type. |
If you guys feel like trading beers quebec brewed vs american brewed, let me know.

Got off work 30 minutes ago, went right to the Friday night pub. Dogfish 60 minute was my first choice, then I sampled a grimbergen...tasted very similar to trois pistoles, sampled a Lancaster milk stout...very strong chocolate smell and flavor. I choose a Lancaster Baltic porter...pretty tasty. in the words of Forrest Gump: "That's all I have to say about that."

There is a place near me called Union Jack's. They serve a pile of microbrews. May 5th they are having "Cinco de Lagunitas". I will be there, and I have a feeling it's going to be awesome.
