DELICIOUS. A hint of cherry in the aftertaste that was more evident in the smell. All over a delicious wheat beer that i love. I must find more of this.

I puked from that sam adams cherry crap. to each his own haha.

skidude 11-06-2012 06:21 AM

A lot of people don't like the cherry wheat because the cherries are more like cough-syrup cherries than fresh cherries or something, but I think it's delicious.

concealer404 11-06-2012 07:55 AM

Weird... i got a "fresh cherry" vibe from it.. and it was really faint either way. If it was a LOT of cherry, i'd probably hate it. :P

Got a chance to visit a Chicago microbrew a few weeks ago and work on some of my equipment they have on their packaging line....

Revolution Brewing
Revolution Brewing | Chicago, Illinois

Their "EuGene Porter" is amazing. one of the best porters I have had. not too heavy.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1353111765

Their "Bottom Up Wit" is a great Belgian style similar to a hoegaarden.

If you are in the Chicago area give them a try!

Tonight's offerings:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1353118236

Red Rye P.A. from Founders.
YUM. Notable hops with a smooth malt balance.

Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald Porter.
For the wife. I tasted--it was good. Wife says it goes well with the dark chocolate.

thirdgen 11-17-2012 01:49 AM

I really like the Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale from Founders, but my favorite Founder's product might have to be the Breakfast Stout.
I went to the bar after work and I drank a Lost Coast Double Trouble. It was a Double IPA, 8.5%abv. I wasn't that impressed with it. I then drank an Angry Orchard Cider...I thought it was a decent selection just to switch it up from what I'd normally drink. The bar I went to didn't have any draft under $4, so I wasn't too eager to spend $30 to feel the night.
I'm home now, drinking a Smutty Nose IPA. I have a cold though, and this actually goes well with the taste of Afrin Nasal spray, Chloraseptic throat spray, and halls menthol cough drops. It actually makes it taste almost as shitty as the Ithaca Pumpkin Ale I had on tap last night.
My pumpkin ale favorite? Southern Tier Pumpking is #1. If you can find it on draft, Southern Tier Pumpking "oak aged" Pumpking beats regular Pumpking, but good luck finding it.
Every other pumpkin ale is generic. I use the word "generic" as referring to a "wanna be" or "immitation".
The Sinead O'Connor song "Nothing compares to you" was actually written about Southern Tier Pumpking.

uhh
well it SMELLS like slightly roasty maple syrup (yum)
but the flavor is distinctly smoked beer (well)

anyway it's interesting. I first saw it at the Portland Voodoo donut and did not get it (just a bunch of donuts because damn, couture donuts) so when I saw it at the local whole foods... bought. Figured it'd make an interesting sip for after thanksgiving.

Tonight's choice after spending the whole day black Friday shopping with my 4 month old son (who is the best behaved little boy ever), my shop-o-holic wife, and my mother in law...it's time to cut loose.
I bought a variety case of Flying Dog last week. Tonight I'm drinking the Oyster Stout, and chasing it with Midnight Moon Apple Pie Moonshine. My buddy thinks it's real moonshine, but I beg to differ. I mean, come on, it's 70 proof and you can buy it at a liquor store. I had to try it anyway cause I hear so much raving about it...and holy SHIT. This stuff is AMAZING. I think it should be at least 100 proof, cause all I taste is apple pie, a little alcohol would give it that extra that it needs. I recommend spending the $18.99 on a Mason jar of this stuff and trying it!

hector 11-23-2012 10:45 PM

Well after weeks of being sick and not having any taste buds or spending too much time putting tile in my bathroom, I have never installed tile, I finally got out of the house for a tasty brew. I had a couple of Kwak,s, a rather tasty Belgian ale. Now I'm having a Winter Solstice by Anderson Valley Brewing Co. Rather good and a nice change of pace. Very much like an English ale but with a note of caramel yet not sweet so its perfect after the Kwak. I would take a pic but my phone has no flash and the light sucks. Thankfully the beer doesn't.

old school 11-24-2012 12:01 AM

Yeah we get all the best beer here in humboldt County in Eureka California. Last night I went over to Mcinleyville and got a chili pepper ale over at 6 Rivers brewery. Now that's the best beer ever.

Oh is it? Cause I beg to differ. Even though I haven't had it, I can say that if you make a black and tan out of Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA and Dogfish Head World Wide Stout, (it's called a Heaven and Hell), I'm pretty certain it would be way better than a chili pepper ale.

hector 11-24-2012 12:24 AM

Old School, I cant imagine liking a beer with chilli pepper essence but you left coast guys have Lagunitas. Mama said give credit where credit is due and thats all I have to say about that.

old school 11-24-2012 12:26 AM

I do have a soft spot in my heart for black and tans but we have seven exceptional breweries here. Humboldt bud money speaks volumes.

Andersons Summer Solstice is probably one of my absolute favorite beers ever. Every once in a while my girl will steal one and make bread with it, fricking amazing. An Anderson Valley Hop Ottin' IPA was the first tap handle I ever stole :giggle:

Lost Coast is pretty decent. Great White is my "go to" when I can't find anything other than macrobrew, and the 8Ball stout is pretty great as well.

But seriously dude, are you from Humboldt or did you get stuck in Arcadia after college? Get out and travel man, there is great beer (and weed, if thats your thing) all over this country. The cascades happen to be blessed with great water and perfect hop growing weather, but NorCal is not the be-all end-all location on the planet. Go to Russian River and get a Pliny the Elder or Damnation on tap, or head up north the visit the guys from Rogue, Deschutes or Ninkasi and check out what they are doing. Go to Colorado and visit Avery or Left Hand. San Francisco has 21st Amendment and Anchor Brewing (who make the only surviving example of the first native style of beer to the US) or head further south and visit Stone or Ballast Point. Seriously man, get out more.

I'm currently working my way through Blue Moons winter sampler. Up until recently I pretty much just drank cheep beer (bud light) but lately I've been trying to expand my taste. I had a Guinness but I didn't like it if I'm honest (even though im no shit Irish). So far I've really enjoyed the Spiced Amber Ale and Belgian White.

Had a bottle of Black Diamond's Grand Cru tonight.
I bought it on a whim because of the reasonable pricing and my love for dark, strong beer. I wasn't disappointed with this one, definitely a great qpr- I think it was $8-9. Its a dark belgian-style ale. ~9% abv, deep without being heavy and thick tasting (so decent with a meal or after dinner). Smelled like chocolate and oak, tasted like vanilla and cherries. I would have liked a bit more of a yeasty/bubly-ness to it, but I'm not at all dissatisfied.

4 oz. Cacao Nibs in the secondary (1 week so far)

Chocolate Milk Stout - FUCK YEAH! 39 more pints to go!

Hi g , that beer you made looks and sounds amazing. I want to come to your house and drink your beer.
Had a pigskin pumpkin ale at six rivers before dinner. That was really nice and refreshing. Then had the sasquatch strong ale. Wow that was nice.

Now trying a mad river brewing company, Jamaica sunset India pale ale out of the bottlle. Not bad.

RedCarmel 11-28-2012 01:33 AM

I have to say that Six Rivers has got to be one of the worst brewpubs I've ever been to. Horrible beer and horrible food. Most insulting to Belgians everywhere was the Raspberry "lambic" kool-aid drink.

However, most beer from Mad River and Eel River are very nice. Lost Coast has a few good session brews.

Just came home from the SeaBright Brewing Co. Where I had the 8 pence porter. Very smooth with a nice chocolate flavor.

Now I'm drinking/eating Willett poured over trader joes coffee ice cream :)

Hi gesso! :wavey: Damn you, I'm jealous. I haven't had a good porter in a long time, and you know I trust your judgement on beer. Burbon & ice cream sounds amazing! I also wish SeaBright had better distribution. Remind me next time I'm in your neck of the woods as I have 6 5 22oz bottles of beer/cider hybrid for you from when I kegged it. I also have a bottle of my holiday saison for you if you didn't get one already.

I kinda brew... a lot. I've still got 5g of straight cider still in the carboy that I'm waiting to clear. It started at 1.080 and it looks like it ended around 1.002! That's 8.3% ABV for you non homebrewers. It may need some additional time to bulk age and mellow itself. I've also got 5g of California Common that I need to keg and faux lager and 5g of my "Millennium Falcon IPA" that I need to dry-hop. :bigtu:

All night at work I was craving a 60 minute. I'm home drinking a founders harvest ale. It is everything I hoped it would be. It kicks southern tier harvest's ass. Kind of reminds me of a 60 minute with a seasonal taste to it, if that makes sense. I kind if get a hint of simcoe hops?

hector 12-07-2012 08:41 PM

Started the night with a Piraat. Very nice Belgian with a not so dry finish but not overly sweet. Then had an Andersons Winter Solstice and was just as good as the first time. Great seasonal beer. Now working my way through a Schneider Weisse Aventinus. My taste buds may be skewed by the sausage and mushroom pizza but I taste licorice in this. Nice change of pace and not that we have seaons here in SoFla. But a nice winter beer after all.

A Sign From Above? Needing New Roof, Monks Sell Rare Beer In U.S. : The Salt : NPR

The 12th day of the 12th month of 2012 is not a day of deliverance but of delivery for devout American fans of Westvleteren 12, brewed by the reclusive Belgian monks at St. Sixtus Abbey.

The celebrated beer — often called the best in the world — is usually only available for sale at the abbey, located in the Belgian countryside. But starting Wednesday, buyers in the U.S. and other countries can purchase the beer at select retailers for $84.99 for six bottles.

Why this sudden blessing for beer lovers? The abbey happened to need an expensive renovation recently. But its 21 monks live an austere life — which means, among other things, that they purposely lack cash reserves. So the monks reluctantly made the decision to export small amounts of the precious nectar overseas for the first time.

And, says Mark Bode, the longtime spokesman for the Westvleteren Brewery, "I think it will be the last." Bode is one of very few people privy to the monks' views, as no visitors are allowed inside the abbey.

"They say, 'We are monks, we don't want to be too commercial. We needed some money to help us buy the new abbey and that's it,' " Bode explains. "Back to normal again."

At the abbey in western Belgium's countryside, "normal" entails a life entirely focused on prayer. The monks rise at 3 a.m. to start the first of seven prayer sessions per day. In between, they busy themselves in the kitchen and the garden, and with tasks like painting — and brewing.

The monks have brewed the same amount of beer every year since 1945 — about 3,800 U.S. barrels, just the amount needed to sustain the abbey. Sales of the beer are tightly controlled.
TL;DR: YES

(2) dominion oak barrel stouts
(2) founders backwoods bastards
(2) Troeg's mad elf
(1) leffe brown
(1) Firestone Union Jack
(1) spire mountain cider

(2) Sierra Nevada celebration ale
(1) national bohemian beer
(1) hacker-pschorr Munich gold lager
(1) fat tire new Belgium amber ale
(1) ranger IPA
(1) Orval Trappist ale
(1) flying dog imperial coffee stout
(1) Oscar blues g'knight
(1) Maui brewing coconut porter
