I had a few Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stouts again. Totally great Stout, definately in my top 5 stouts. I also had a Wells Banana Bread Beer. It was decent. Tasted like if you baked a really good banana bread and dipped it in a yuengling lager.
Then I had a Red Seal Ale. It is a pale ale, but it almost tasted like an IPA. It was pretty tasty, I was happy with it.
I decided last night to buy a bottle of Scotch. I bought McClellands Single Malt Islay. It is pretty wicked, but it has a very strong taste of wood ash. I'm happy with it though as it was $20.

I had some King Cobra today while I watched football. It was pretty good.

so I found a liquor store in MD that has amazing beer selection AND is open till 11 on most days! my inner alcoholic is raving.

they carry this shit:

thagr81 us 10-12-2011 10:24 PM

Have you had the Terrible? It was quite good when I had it last...

Anyone out there have any Cantillon they would ship me? I will return the favor with quite a few brews in return. :)

soviet 10-12-2011 10:40 PM

Yeah, I've had 2 bottles so far and it was amazing. Funny thing is, I used to live in Montreal and could never find Terrible anywhere. Unibroue is in Chambly which is a suburb outside of Montreal.... And yet here it is in stock at some shithole College Park, MD

I dont know if it was because I ate an apple first, but it tasted astringent and very bitter for the first glass. after eating normal food it mellowed out some but I think it was just an off-tasting night for me.

Ultimately I got: dry, fizzy, herbal, citrus, bitter finish but I dont think those are for real. my wife loved it. (she is a beer nerd)

Have to agree with the Peche Mortel part of this post without a doubt. I used to hate Saisons, but there are a few that I can tolerate now as long as the spiciness level is tame.

Haha! He will not be able to find most of those listed unfortunately. I will either have to find a guy with a REALLY good hook-up or travel to Belgium/Sweden/Denmark to get/try most of those (as far as the Belgian based brews). The others are mostly one-off releases that never saw distribution. Have him check and I can Paypal him any money and shipping fees if some of those are doable for him in his area.

Realized that after typing. Then read through the list and saw maybe one or two we might see.

Hmmm have a friend in Belgium now... but flying beer back is notoriously a pain in the ass.

I have six bottles of La Terrible and a couple of bottles of Trois Pistoles in my refrigerator right now. Unibroue is one of my favorite breweries.

y8s 10-13-2011 10:42 PM

I think Unibroue needs to either change its name or changes its logo to:

Cayete, Blondie... There are two kinds of beer drinkers in this world. Those who drink beer with puta names like sunshine, and those who drink cerveza para hombres con nombres 'pistoles' and 'terrible'

I love this stuff.

Tried Delirium Nocturnum for the first time a few weeks ago, and I don't like it quite as much as Tremens. It was good, but had a slight caramel / licorice note about it which I found out of place.

Great beer. Reminds me of Shiner with more hop, the right amount of fix, more complex nuttiness, a bit more smokey, lighter, less bitter...awesome with the ribs I smoked.

Piraat is all the things DT wishes it could be, without the hype. It's a solid beer, don't get me wrong, but I think Piraat is more "fun" than DT.

Normally I do not like IPAs, but a friend of mine, in exchange for some lower control arms and what nots, gave me a pack of Dogfish Head 90-minute IPA. I like it, good stuff.
http://store.liquorama.net/nl/dogfish90minute.jpg

It pairs well with Ritz crackers (LOL) because they take some of the edge off and bring out some of the undertone flavors.

So the only two pale ales I like are Avery Salvation (thanks Hustler) and Dogfish IPA (thanks DVCN). Note that both were provided to me by turbo Miata psychotics.

thirdgen 12-09-2011 11:50 PM

I like the 90 minute very much. The 60 minute is pretty good, but it doesn't have the strength of the 90 minute. The 120 minute is very to potent. It's better to mix with World Wide stout and make a black and tan with.

Tomorrow me and a friend are going to this place:
http://www.thewoodenmatch.com/
I haven't had any alcohol since like November 12th?
I probably will just eat lunch, unless there's something I absolutely must drink. I doubt it though, this list doesn't look too awesome. They have Port Mongo IPA, which is fantastic, but at $12 a glass they can keep it. Southern Tier 2X IPA...that's pretty good. The only thing that appeals to me is the New Holland Dragon’s Milk Bourbon Aged Stout.

thirdgen 12-10-2011 06:16 PM

So I quit drinking on Nov. 12th, but this is what I didn't get shit bag wasted on 1 month later:
Today I went to The Wooden match, which is an old train station in Bethlehem. I had a New Holland Dragon's Milk Stout...Holy fucking wow. This was totally awesome...
Then I had a Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout...it was OK. Very mellow, almost too mellow after the previous....
Then we ditched that place and went to the liberty Taproon:
I drank a Unibroue Trois Pistoles...This was absolutely amazing...I thought it was going to taste like a barley wine, which I'm not a fan of, but it was amazing. Very smooth, yet fruity with a slight cocoa flavor. I really liked this beer.
Next was a Left Hand Wake Up The Dead Imperial Stout:
It was smooth, and that's all I can say about that...10.2%...
Last was a Brew Works Bag Piper Scotch Ale which was 8.5%...it was sweet, but not too sweet. It smeeled sweeter than it was. It was very refreshing, and very tasteful, but yet almost watery.

The soundtrack of the night was Clutch. Songs included, " The Regulator" and "green buckets".

Started tonight with a couple 9% IPAs...for the life of me I can't remember which ones lol. Ended with a couple of these:

Shitty cellphone pic of Ommegang Abbey Ale. A "dessert" beer for sure. Incredibly rich; sweet (but not cloying); caramel, brown sugar, molasses flavors; unfiltered; 8.5%. Like meade, but far richer. Holy shit they were incredible.

I wonder how many monasteries there are in upstate new york....

I think it's awesome that Ommegang and places like Allagash can produce some really good belgian-style beers.

Tonight was dogfish head 120 minute, southern tier oak aged pumking, bells double cream stout, and lagunitas sucks holiday ale.
That pumking aged like that is so amazingly good. I really favored the cream stout as well. The lagunitas sucks ale didn't have that signature lagunitas taste. It tasted similar to Bells Hopslam.

Annual tapping today of the Cherry Awaken Stout at the local brewery, Trinity. They start with the always available Awaken and age it on 1lb of cherries per pint. The result is fucking heaven. The cherries impart a subtle tartness and fruit flavor, but not sweet or over the top in any way. I typically don't like fruit beers at all, but this one is fantastic. Was able to score 2 pints before it ran out.

The list for new years eve includes:
Magic Hat Winter Howl and Victory Storm King Stout (those are the primer beers)
Then we move on to:
North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperian Stout
Founders Breakfast Stout
Fort Collins Chocolate Stout
New Holland Dragons Milk
Then hopefully Southern Tier Mocha...but I have more shopping to do tomorrow before the festivities start.
I may not be drinking those, but serving those as the party bartender to guests who have an appreciation for fine beers.
I'll probably be sipping McClelland's Single Malt Islay Scotch.
We'll see what happens.
