There is a Hofbrau brewery in Newport KY, that we are lucky to be close to. Its nice to get a fresh brewed German beer every now and then.
:friday: |
That is Ralph Steadmans art on that Old Scratch amber bottle never really noticed that, I have a few of his prints now I have to find the beer.
|
I am off beer for a couple days after the neighbor had a Keg of Fireman's 4 Saturday night. Talk about a non-productive Sunday.
Chris |
I just put some (1/6keg) Sam Adams Boston Lager into the kegerator, though I wouldn't say it's my favorite beer.

Tonight I had this on tap at the Flying Saucer: http://mesohoppy.dogfish.com/files/midas-touch.png I'd give it atleast an 8/10. One of the sweeter beers I've had with a very pleasant aftertaste. This recipe is the actual oldest-known fermented beverage in the world! It is an ancient Turkish recipe using the original ingredients from the 2700 year old drinking vessels discovered in the tomb of King Midas. Somewhere between wine & mead; this smooth, sweet, yet dry ale will please the Chardonnay of beer drinker alike. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/127/3...ae0888.jpg?v=0 Chris |
Chris -
Just a generic clear glass pint-glass. The noteworthy part was the beer I poured into it... - L |
Had this the other day. Was worried that it was a bit overhyped, but it turned out to be the best IPA Ive had yet.

Makes me sad looking at this thread. I've been trying to keep my alcohol intake very low, just because I have been fighting acne for 10+ years, and have gotten in under control for the last few years. Alcohol of any quantity makes it flare up and it takes a week or two to get it back under control. If it wasn't for that, I would probably be buzzed right now. My beer of the night WOULD be: Abita Purple Haze... but its a Gatorade Rain and an Ambien to put me out for the night. |
A gift from my father. The class six store on base was having a freight sale and at $1.75 for each half liter bottle, he got a case for each of us. I've had it before. It is Krusovice Black. It is smooth and doesn't taste bitter or frankly very dark. Quite pleasant if you are looking for something not too hoppy, but not too light.
And no, I don't know her, but she seemed to be enjoying her beer. It looks darker than it tastes. And it keeps a nice head, but not too creamy. http://engine.koduleht.net/templates..._Beer_50cl.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_RYdGMen_CPY/SE...furt+(309).JPG |
This is what has been in the fridge for the last couple nights. Going to take a while to get through it all.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3071/...4af09106ea.jpg It is much better than you'd think for costco off-brand beer haha. |

I just found out that Krusovice was bought by Heineken. Boooooo!
Press: Heineken in talks to buy drinks group Dutch brewing giant Heineken NV is in talks to buy the Czech Republic’s Drinks Union group, Mlada fronta Dnes reported. Drinks Union produces six brands of beer, including Dacicky and Zlatopramen, as well as spirits such as Stara Myslivecka. Heineken increased its share of the Czech beer market to 8 percent earlier this year when it acquired the brewery Krusovice. |

Forgot about this thread, here's my brew of the day, or should I say week.
|
Kirkland (Costco) has their own beer? LOL that is great. I love Costco. So it is decent beer? I wonder who brews it for them.
I'm with JayL. New Belgium Brewing FTMFW. I have 6-pack of 1554 Ale in the fridge right now so that is my bière du jour/semaine. Love it. Serve it in a snifter or large red wine glass for the full effect, great bouquet. http://www.newbelgium.com/files/beer...png?1229380498 |
slowly working my way through a local brew. nice and dark for a lager. doesn't remind me of something made in a factory.

Somebody removed my chick enjoying her Krusovice Black. Boo Hoo.
Well here's something you won't find locally. My buddy from Liechtenstein, who's products we sell, brought me a local beer from the Vorarlberg region of Austria which is right across the border from Liechtenstein. He knows I like to try different beers. It is Mohrenbrau Kellerbier. It is darker than a lager and seems to be unfiltered. Kinda spicy actually. Mohrenbrau brewery is in Dornbirn which is in a valley in a pass through the Alps. This area was on the ancient trade route through the Alps and the Brewery was named after some of the exotic people that were common only to the route, the Moors, (or Mohren auf Deutsch) or "black people." So just like today when hair care products are "European Formula" for marketing here and in Europe it is "American or Hollywood Formula" for marketing there, so it was back in the old days. Exotic sells. Since 1834. Notes: Bottom fermented, 5.7% alc., unfiltered, ceramic bottlecap. So tonight I drink "Black People Brewery's Cellar Beer" from Austria. http://www.mohrenbrauerei.at/images/...171/media4.jpg http://www.mohrenbrauerei.at/images/...kellerbier.jpg And credit to my buddy Markus Vetsch for bringing it to me. |

two new delicious beers of late:
Green Flash Brewing Co Hop Head Red Ale (san diego) I like my ales with just a touch of malt and a smattering of hops and this nails it pretty well. It's maybe a little bitter-er than average but very drinkable. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_lCrjr42cSg...sh_hophead.jpg The Brewer's Art "Resurrection" Abby-style Ale (Baltimore, MD) This is a super tasty ale. Drinkable like the hop head, but with a smoother finish. it plays up the more sweet flavors of the malt instead of the bitter of the hop without being "sweet" at all. It is pretty much what I'm looking for when I want an ale. The waitress told me "it's dark like guiness" when I asked what it was... very glad how wrong she was. It was friggin delicious. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vbczmt9LYR...rt%2BRezzy.jpg |
I'm drinking #4 again.

I just realized that my post of Resurrection was resurrecting this thread.

Kloster Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel, one of three I "tasted" less than 500 yards from the brewery about 45km outside of Munich, Germany today. You get a liter or nothing when you get a beer here, awesomeness.

mmmmmmmm doppelbocks...
New Belgium Brewing Company comes through again. Last night I tried the Mothership Wit for the first time; it is part of a New Belgium combo pack being sold at Costco. I have a thing for beers with coriander in them and this one is no exception. It is on the light side but really tasty. I think I will go get one right now. http://w.newbelgium.com/files/beergl...png?1229380416 I am not one of those organic types. I just like the beer. |

Unibroue Don de Dieu. Triple wheat ale. A little sweet and wheaty with that 9% warmth. Their website says it goes well with meats and cheeses and charcuterie. I'm drinking it with cold pizza (extra pepperoni). Close enough. |
Bought a case of the Costco beer last night:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3629/...a50f14485b.jpg Have only tried the Amber Ale and Hefe. Both were mediocre. The Amber Ale was better than any cheap American brand, but worse than any micro that I've had. The Hefe was a major let down, but still better than Bud Light Wheat. I don't like Pale Ales so we'll see how the German Larger is. Overall, good for the price ($18.99 + $1.57 TX tax = ~$.85/beer). Buy it for parties or for your friends that need to try new beers but won't appreciate the good stuff. Chris |
I'm surprised the hefeweizen was no good, I've yet to find one over here I don't like more than ANY US beer.

I have been searching for y8s suggestion "Dom De Dieu" but have not yet encountered it locally. I'm still working on finishing a case of Spaten "Oktoberfest Ur-Marzen" and a case of Blue Moon's "Honey Moon Summer Ale" that I got from the freight sale at the class six store on base - $6.99 a case! They discount them drastically when they get close to expiration of the freshness date. |

I have tried this one and the problem is it doesn't really taste like a hefeweizen. No tart crispness, no hint of clove or banana, and very little wheaty flavor.

Incidentally I was just at Brasserie Beck here in DC and they had some fabulous blanche on tap but I forget what it was. |
Hey sixshooter...you're avatar's are making me wish it was spring already so festivals will start again, knock it off.

But like sixshooter said, it didn't have the standard Hefe taste. Chris |
Beer of the night: Schwaben Brau Meister Pils $15 @ the class 6 for a 20 case of .5L bottles, pretty damn good for the price, especially considering that's with the deposit for the bottles.
http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...a/SDC10328.jpg EDIT: One of the better "cheap, everyday" hefe's I've found over here, pretty good IMO. Franziskaner Weisbier, their Dunkel Weisen (dark wheat beer) is phenominal. http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...a/SDC10329.jpg |

Have you tried Aventinus made by Schneider and Sohns from Munich? It was discussed earlier in this thread. It is a doppelbock weizen and is complex and delicious. Y8s, Blue Moon and Wittekerke are known to me and are commonly available on tap around here and are good. I've seen the Blanche de Bruxelles but have not yet tried it. The place that has it usually has Paulaner or Franziskaner and occasionally Aventinus on tap, so it is tough to pull myself away from those. But next time... |
The Costco/Kirkland German Larger is about the same as the other too, mediocre but good for the price. It's like Costco is defining the generic beer.
It wasn't too bad to simmer some venison sausage and onions in though. Chris |

I need to try some of that Franzinskaner. That sounds tasty. I recognize the label so I have seen it around.
I know I sound like a broken record, but Aventinus on tap FTMFW! I need to call the Flying Saucer and see if they have it on tap right now. It is pretty good in a bottle but muuuuch better on tap. Tonight's selection is the Hoptober from New Belgium. It is the remaining beer in the sampler pack I bought. From the title and the fact that it is an ale I figured it would be a hoppy IPA style brew. I am not into IPAs at all. Well, it is indeed pretty damn hoppy but I am going to finish it anyway. You IPA fans are welcome to drop by and drink the rest of what I have in the fridge. I will be switching back to the 1554 for the next beer. http://w.newbelgium.com/files/beergl...png?1250191850 |
Here's what I'm drinking at the moment. Victory Moonglow.
http://atlantabeermaster.com/blog/wp...on-225x300.jpg It's an unfiltered weizenbock. It's got plenty of yeasty spiciness and a fruity phenolic aroma that's almost like a Belgian. Lots of sweet malty goodness, quite bready, and a bit warming on the finish with 8.7% ABV. This isn't as dark or chocolaty as Aventinus, but it's a very good example of the style. |
tonite: starr hill amber on draft. deliciously drinkable. especially at a movie theatre watching "the hangover".
followed by a dogfish head chicory stout. who knew beer and st john's wort could be friends? |
Cool, a beer with St. John's Wort. Perfect for chasing away the holiday blues. Love it.
|
EDIT: One of the better "cheap, everyday" hefe's I've found over here, pretty good IMO. Franziskaner Weisbier, their Dunkel Weisen (dark wheat beer) is phenominal. I found one of these and drank it today while firing off the potato cannon. It is indeed pretty tasty. Apparently I got a reasonably fresh bottle because it was not skunky at all. I could not find the Franziskaner Dunkel Weisen. |

Two more I figure I might as well share while the threads been revived. Weihenstephaner Vitus, a Weizenbock so essentially a stronger unfiltered heffe. Nothing to special, but still pretty good and 7.7% to boot. http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/SDC10404.jpg Bottle everyone should keep there eyes open for, undoubtedly the best beer I've ever had, hands down. Andechs Dopplebock Dunkel. http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/SDC10403.jpg |
My German beer supplier here in Baumholder hooked me up with a few of these specials seasonal Kirner Schinderhannes Bocks tonight, definitely worth trying if you can find it stateside.

I got a six pack ($15) of these a couple weeks ago:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2635/...d2f4ca776e.jpg http://www.saintarnold.com/beers/divine.html Very intense. The pumpkin was not over powering and this was smooth for a stout. Chris |
Made a special Christmas Eve trip to "The Bottle Shop" in Idar-Oberstein Germany today. Had over 280 different bottled beers, guy that was working was awesome, cracked open several beers for me to try right there on the spot. I ended up walking out with 11 new beers and 2 new glasses.
This one is only brewed on nights of a full-moon (Vollmond means full moon in German apparently) and isn't bad at all, not sure what style I would classify it as, it's different to say the least. http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...erVollmond.jpg Also finally found some Aventinus, still got my eyes open for the Aventinus Eisbock though. |
I'm missing some Belgian Orval tonight, I need to find Augustiner Dunkelwiesen locally as well.
|
I found Thomas Kemper Integrale, sipping ATM.
