This is excellent. Real Ale has a Coffee Porter as a winter seasonal that is excellent as well.

Pours a dark amber, almost brown color, with a huge rocky cream colored head.

Very yeasty nose, spicy, with some vinegar like notes.

Taste is good. Very clean tasting dubbel, classic flavors, and nothing really distracting. Starts out with tart fruit flavors, some spicy yeast, and creamy malts. Finish is dry, with a hint of alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel is nice, prickly warmth, smooth, and well carbonated.

Drinkabilty is very good. This is a very nice Dubbel, fits the style really well. I'd happily drink another of these.

I thought it was pretty damn solid, but I'm not a stout drinker like some of you tards. I'll definitely pick up a 4-pack of this in the future when I get tired of drink my Belgian Champaign beers. I drank it with spicy chicken and veggie red curry.

My daddy had some Guinness and this Sapporo beer in the cooler. I grabbed a bottle of the Asian one. I liked it. (Its Japanese but brewed in Guelph where I lived for a while). Then I went on youtube for shits and giggles. Found this half black half italian guy, names JD and he kicks ass at reviewing beers. Check it...

St Bernardus is close, I happen to think Rochefort 10 is closer, but yes that is real Westvleteren, before I leave europe I'll be making my way to Westvleteren with a reservation for 3 full cases of Westy's 12 (hopefully)

Jealous... :( We had a local beer festival this weekend. Got to tried 43 different brews from around the world I hadn't tried before. All in all, great time. Just hope they do it next year...

Out of curiosity, whats a bottle run at "Mr. G's"?

My guess would be $40+... In for answer.

Had myself a Delirium Tremens poured into a Chimay Goblet last night... Mmmmmmm.

Also hustler, I picked up the Avery Salvation awhile back per your suggestion. I will let you know when I try it... Also got their Collaboration Ale as well.

thagr81 us 04-14-2010 10:19 AM

Picked up a bottle of Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout last night prior to going home. I will report back as the reviews seem pretty good on it.

Cracking open my fresh growler of Barrel Aged Speedway Stout from Ale Smith in San Diego, CA tonight...yes, in Germany.

thagr81 us 04-14-2010 10:39 AM

Just checked out their site... Gawd damn 12% ABV. Not sure if things changed after being aged or not as that was for the regular Speedway Stout.

Barrel aging shouldn't alter the alcohol content at all. Can't wait to crack her open though, only about 2 more hours ;).

thagr81 us 04-14-2010 10:48 AM

Lucky bastard... I can't get it over here due to being on the East Coast. :( But you're in Germany... WTF!? Haha!

That's really not that bad then all things considered. The decent restaurants and bars in Belgium that don't try to COMPLETELY rape you charge somewhere around 5-6 euro (about 8-9USD) the beer shops and asshole-owned bars charge upwards of 16-18 euro a piece. Granted buying from the monastery you pay about 1.80 euro a piece, but it's damn near impossible to do so.

Machismo 04-14-2010 11:03 AM

Hustler - whatever that was that you tried to get me crunk on and "Bro rape" me with was awesome! 10% is def. where its at for a beer! ;)

The trade threads are open to all members, I'm not premium either...there's some features that are locked out but you can still look at the ISO/FT threads and message people with no issues, I've completed quite a few trades lately (including this growler )

Beer #2 for the evening is an Avery Salvation Belgian-Style Golden Ale per hustler's review... Not a bad choice. Thanks for the suggestion.

And for your viewing pleasure.

ZX-Tex 04-14-2010 09:15 PM

So two of these BJ's Brewhouses are being opened up in SA, one close to me, opens next week. It's a chain but supposedly brews beer on-site. Anyone tried any of their brews?
http://www.bjsrestaurants.com/beer.aspx

I suppose I'll be finding out for myself soon enough.

I have not... Report back upon trying them.

The few reviews on RB don't give them much credit, but they tend to be a bit beer-snobish on occasion, go grab a beer and enjoy it, what's the worst that could happen?

This! That is unfortunately the problem with some of the beer review sites, as some beers get bad reviews and everyone avoids that beer like the plague... However, it might be something that your palette truly enjoys. Trust me, I know...

ZX-Tex 04-14-2010 09:43 PM

Yeah I don't think I would let one or two bad reviews from snobs keep me away. All I am risking is a bit of my time and a few bucks after all. Their stout looks tasty judging from the description on their standard microbrew menu.

ecko 04-14-2010 09:47 PM

I've had all of the BJ beers. They're all worth trying and they should have a sampler. I like the dark ones.

Vashthestampede 04-15-2010 07:36 PM

Tonight I shall drink some Budweiser, with a side of Jack from the bottle.

y8s 04-15-2010 08:49 PM

tonight's choice thanks to the lady:
Flying Dog "Garde Dog" seasonal.

thirdgen 04-15-2010 09:19 PM

Yuengling bock beer is out of season now, so I've been drinking Red Stripe....with occasional shots of Wild Turkey American Honey...

thagr81 us 04-16-2010 07:52 AM

Flyin' Dog Garde Dog isn't a bad beer at all... I was actually quite surprised. I still want to get my hands on a Flyin' Dog Ragin' Bitch though. :(

I made it a Saranac night with a Belgian Ale, Winter Lager, and Rye IPA. http://www.saranac.com/

Would it bother you at all if I told you I had a semi-local (roughly 45 minutes out) beer shop where I can get Raging Bitch on a fairly regular basis?

thagr81 us 04-16-2010 08:59 AM

Yes it would... Haha! If you were State-side I would say I could trade some locals with you for it.

I'll try anything, I guess I'm leaning more towards Belgian strong ales and sours lately just given my location in the world, but I'm a big fan of IPA's, Impy Stouts, bocks, pretty much anything you put in front of me that's not brewed by Bud, Miller, or Coor's :giggle: In other words a few good locals'll be just fine by me anytime.

thagr81 us 04-16-2010 10:51 AM

Here are the three breweries local to myself... Make a list and PM me. They will be sent your way upon your arrival in the States.

Everything FD I've found in Belgium/Germany was brewed in MD according to the labels. Pretty neat that it's made it over here but you can't find it there.

Getting FD here is not a problem... It's just getting ahold of their rare/limited releases that are the problem.

KPLAFIN 04-16-2010 11:18 AM

Going to my local taproom tonight... So, too many to list. If I have one after I get home I will share.
