It is in fact honey wine. I made 5 gallons of it for my wedding and indulgent sampling facilitated one of the worst hangovers I've ever experienced, so I never served it. I think it got the airlock knocked off and became rather oxidized :(

Much like cider its generally very dry so hard to not accidentally drink a lot of it. People tend to ferment it with fruit to give it some more body/flavor/color and my favorites are by far the berry types usually referred to as a Melomel. Brewed with hops and malt and its a Braggot, brewed with apple and its called a Cyser. A very classic preparation is brewing with herbs and spices, then its called a Metheglin.

Its a quite ancient beverage and rather difficult to make well. It most likely predates beer in most ancient societies. In antiquity it was believed to enhance fertility, but I tend to believe it just makes people get it on while they are piss drunk. :giggle:

You should stop me or I'll keep going.

lol
that was actually a pretty entertaining read

Honey is such a simple sugar that the yeast tends to turn it into very high level alcohols, so watch your ass :) It can be incredibly good stuff, but sweet generally indicates backsweeting with non-fermentable sugar (hangover city) or sulfites (red wine headache) so be careful if you are susceptible to such things.

Its dead simple if you want to try to make some. If you have a source of local honey like a farmers market, its always better to buy fresh and cheaper to buy in bulk. I've got about a gallon of simple mead I made about 3 years ago and it just keeps getting better. Methinks I need make moar one of these days.

I take my alcoholism very seriously. Would you believe tonight I'm "beta testing" a cider from a brewery in San Jose?

I made mead once. It looked like piss and tasted worse. I think it must have gotten contaminated or I didnt get all the bleach out of the carboy.

i did mead once as well. I think i did 3 gallons....maybe five... you have to let it age in secondary for like 8 months.

I did more than half has sparking mead and made about 10 bottles.

the bottles were good, the carbonated stuff not so much. I'd like to try it again soon....I'm pretty lazy with my booze making so mead is a good one to do its easy but takes a long time to age.

oh yea its like 17% if done right it will get you *fucked* up if you done use caution

I found a little bar in Indianapolis over the weekend that had ~8 types of mead on tap. I had a very pleasant walk around the neighborhood after that.

Mead is related to the term "honeymoon" if you check the etymology. It is possibly the oldest purposely fermented drink.

Why are you people not in the homebrewing thread?

Just because you can do a thing, does that mean you should do a thing?

What the hell, I'd be up for giving them a taste, but not for 15 f$%king dollars!

I got burned pretty hard by the Rogue/Voodoo Bacon Maple Ale so I'm a bit gun shy.

Good to know. I remember seeing that in the stores. Glad I passed on it now. I still enjoy their double chocolate stout on occasion.

Monk 03-19-2015 08:29 PM

I tried it last year as well. To be fair, it tasted exactly like you would expect.

Add me to the list of suckers. Imagine the worst aspects of a smoked beer and you're pretty much there.

I bought a case of 12 bottles because my coworkers wanted to split it. We opened one bottle in the office to share and suddenly no one was interested anymore. I still have most of the case.
