Today's beer to quench the hot weather: Fordham copperhead ale.



We had been wondering what happened to Old Dominion brewery. I guess they merged with Fordham a few years back.

 

Sort of a dark ale, although the brewing process makes it not entirely fit that definition.
I used to drink it pretty often before I started branching off into different styles.
It's pretty common and reasonably priced.

I keep seeing this stuff at the local Safeway, was tempted to try it, but didn't. Now I will.

I believe I have had one of these. No idea which one, but I seem to remember the name. Gonna have to check out the local beer store.

 

They're certainly ok, but they aren't exactly what I'd call inexpensive.

I don't know what kind of pricing you'd see in your locale, but a few of the less expensive imperial stouts that I find to be a good value in a pinch (flavor and ABV vs. cost) are (not surprisingly) from the larger craft breweries:

Lagunitas Brewing's Imperial Stout or Cappuccino Stout 22oz. bottles = $3.50










North Coast Brewing's Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout 4x12oz. = $7.40





Sierra Nevada Brewing's Narwhal Imperial Stout 4x12oz. = $10

 

Cappuccino Stout sounds tasty. I like coffee/chocolate overtones in my stout. I've taken some notes for my trip to the local brew store this evening. Thanks.

 

Tried a bottle last night. TBH, not something I'll try again. Left this strong sweet chemical taste in my mouth that took a sixpack of this to get rid of.

 

That seems cheap.

For instance, Green Flash is typically $11/ 4-pack out here, big bombers of good beer will be between $6-12/per depending on exactly what it is. For instance, most Rogue stuff is around $7.50 per 22oz.

Looks like alcohol is about the only thing that isn't cheap here in the buckle of the Bible belt.

 

The Costco stores around here sell 22oz. bombers of that Rogue Double Chocolate Stout for somewhere between $11 - $13. It is good, but not $.50+ /oz. good. I will say that's not at all unusual anymore. The prices they charge for these bombers nowadays is approaching that of wine purchases.

Gonna head down after work and pick one up, as well as see what other stuff they have in bottles. Lots of selection, so I should find something good.

 

Are you sure that's a stout? When I google it, I only see them coming up as an IPA.

 

And IPA with no bitterness? Hell, I might actually drink that.

I think almost all beer is far too hoppy these days. It's supposed to be a slight finish, not overpower the malt. I really think that most people really don't like beer, but are afraid to admit it, so they drink this hoppy ****. Like "dry" wine.

^^ That Goliat does look nice. I've have tried their regular imperial stout, but not that barrel aged version. I bet that one wasn't cheap.

 

I think it was $18/bottle. Worth it just to try. I probably won't make a habit out of it, but it's going on the list of "if i find a twenty spot on the ground, i'll probably buy another bottle."

I had a bunch of others that night, but it appears i may have been too drunk to continue taking pictures. Delermium Tremens was on the list.

 

Wut? I only drink "dry" wine like Cab's and Syrah, I hate sweet wine. It has the mouth feel of syrup.

And it depends on the beer, for instance, we have a local company that makes an IPA that's outstanding, Lagunitas IPA? I think is way overrated.

Fantastic beer. Also try their stout, I think it's Delerium Nocturnal.

 

Last night after dinner, I took the wife to Beers of the World. They have a huge selection, but also a very knowledgeable staff. That helps to find exactly what you are looking for, and they provide samples of the beer on tap to help you decide.

The Saratoga Deathwish is indeed an IPA. Great malt flavor, but it is ruined by the hugely excessive, overpowering hops. Had it not had so much hoppiness, I would have gotten it. Making it an IPA ruined it entirely. Instead, I got a growler of Sam Adams Robust porter, and another of Rorbach's (local microbrewery) Vanilla Porter. The Sam Adam's is very strong tasting, almost harsh. The dark roast of the malt really comes through. It's fairly well hopped, but needs to be to offset the very strong malt flavors. The Vanilla porter is much more mellow, and the vanilla really complements the dark malt. That one is much cheaper, at only 8 bucks a growler. I will be going back for more of that in the future.

ALso picked up a bottle of Mississippi Mud Black & Tan. Very smooth, but fairly sweet. Made a great counterpoint the the Robust Porter. Bought it simply because the bottle - which looks like a little brown jug - caught my eye. Glad I got it.

And just because I have had it before, I bought a couple of bottles of Arrogant Bastard Stout.

Spent the evening sitting on the neighbor's porch, drinking beer with several neighbors while the kids played in the yard. Later, we retired to the back yard so the kids could swim, and sat around the fire pit. Nice night, great neighbors, good beer. It doesn't get much better than that.
