You can't just jump into ring training. You will destroy your elbows, guaranteed.

Check out Gymnastic Bodies. I have done a seminar with them in San Diego and they tend to attract lots of rock climbers. The programs will humble you, guaranteed! Especially flexibility.

You are basically tricking yourself with something that tastes good but with none of the calories your body is used to with the association of good drinks/food with calories. So when you take the second part away your body starts to crave the calories it thought it was ingesting. So you start to crave what you usually get when you drink regular soda so your body responds appropriately to try and get those calories it feels it should already have. Its kind of like classical conditioning in a way but with a twist. This is just my opinion however, not a doctor nor do I have any medical/dietary education.

Happened to catch this episode on the radio this afternoon on WBEZ.
Thought it was interesting. Fat-acceptance gone awry. Apparently it's no longer ok to think that people who deliberately make unhealthy decisions are deliberately making unhealthy decisions. |
The simpson have an episode on this. I just watched it. "Walking Big and Tall"

-Lindy West, professional fat person https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d55883656a.png Just kind blows my mind. 18 months ago, I was well over 220 lbs, which at 6'2" put me right on the scary edge of the border between "overweight" and "obese." 167 lbs this morning. That's over 50 lbs of lard gone in about the same time as the gestation period of an African elephant. 50 LBS! That's a whole sack of Quikrete fast-setting concrete mix (Home Depot SKU #842303) that I'm no longer carrying around every day. And yet, since moving to the midwest, I see these folks everywhere. I work with one. I have no idea how much this guy weighs; I'm terrible at estimating such things, but 300 lbs easily. He works in master control, which is on the 2nd floor of the building. He's the only person I know who uses the freight elevator to get up and down rather than the stairs (we're a pre-ADA building, and have no people elevator), and any time I see him, he's got a bag of Fritos, or a cinnamon bun, or some other horrid thing in-hand. In the radio show I posted to above, the first-act fat person talked about chairs, and fear of destroying them. Reminded me of an afternoon about 12 years ago, when I was building some new studios for Clear Channel Radio in LA. It was towards the end of the project, and we went out to lunch with the chief engineer of KFI. He was a large gentleman, again, well over 300, all of it blubber. It was an outdoor cafe, with plastic chairs around round patio tables. He sat down, and almost immediately the chair fractured and collapsed, spilling him onto the ground. He died of a heart attack around 2008. He was my age (40) at the time. More insanity: Fat and happy: No one tells author Lindy West what to do | The Seattle Times |

That was a while ago, how'd you do, what'd you total? I train for powerlifting, though I'm not competitive and I'm not quite at my old peak (which wasn't really very good anyway). I'm not sure how it is over in the US, but there is a fantastic community here in Australia with some excellent strength gyms in most large cities.
Just competed last weekend, actually. Went 7/9 - 507, 303, 578. Missed my 3rd bench at 308 and my 3rd deadlift at 601. The deadlift was completed perfectly but the judge decided to not give me a down command...I sent the videos to the state director of the federation and he said I was robbed, basically. Total ended up being 1,389 instead of 1,411 because of the deadlift controversy. Powerlifting is blowing up the in the US. We have too many federations, though. I stick with USPA who are the main rivals for the USAPL (US affiliate of the IPF). They are doing tested meets now so I'm excited about that. |
Good lifts man, well done grinding through that squat! That sucks about the 3rd dead lift though. Hook grip made me wince in pain just watching!
|
Great meet man. I will bow down to you and your squat and deadlift. I can't seem to make shit happen nowadays. Hoping this coming months shows good progress.
|
yeah, that grind through the squat must've taken some dedication!

Hook grip is wonderful. Once you can learn how to abduct your thumb across the palm you're golden. It doesn't hurt anymore, plus I get to train with straps 99% of the time and then just hook a few times when I prep and enjoy the symmetrical life. For extra grip work I just use my hands for everything else besides deads and use my Captains of Crush grippers, do farmer's walks, etc.. My best double overhand dead is 405 and I've done 10 wide grip, dead hang pullups at 230lbs with my bare hands. Make the switch, man. It's worth the learning curve.

In training my heaviest squat was 476, heaviest bench was 305, heaviest dead was 585 (near maximal effort/ RPE 10). My openers put me at 1300+ total which was my total from 6 months ago and I'm much leaner this time around. Squat was a +33lb meet PR, bench opener was +6lb PR, 2nd attempt was +17 PR, deadlift 2nd attempt was +6lb PR and 3rd would/should have been +28lb but that's another story. This off season I'm gonna focus on getting bigger arms and see what I can do about my squat technique. My low bar positioning is so aggressive that it always takes away from my bench. My bench blew up dramatically once I got some decent calories. Actually, all my lifts blew up. I'm really excited to finally start making gains again. Dieting sucks.

:likecat: I'm finding this out myself. I've effectively stopped going out to bars 2-3 times a week to just once maybe every other 2 weeks. Liver & wallet both seem to be happier.
Went to the doctor's today for congestion/allergies and weighed in at 177lbs 5' 7" :eek3: Time to get back to working out. I've been slacking! This also means my cheap scale is cheap and is off by 10lbs or so. |
Have no evidence, but all of our overweight folks are drinking tons of diet crap and are only getting bigger. So I would assume this means...nothing really. It's probably hot much they sit or work-out, eat/drink other food. Most of them drink a crap load of beer. One of them stopped for a while and lost a lot of weight, but then started drinking again.

You guys wanna lose weight the easy way? Try opioids!
I'm not kidding. I took just 2 every six hours after my operation for the first day, and then cut it back to one every six hours for about another day to day and a half. This completely killed my appetite. Not just for those couple of days, but pretty much for the first week. I tried to eat, but it just wasn't happening. It wasn't that the food tasted bad (hey, even in the hospital a carrot stick is still pretty much like you'd find anywhere else), it was just that it had zero appeal. I did experience hunger a couple of times, but a few sips of water usually quenched it. So, here it is, about 2.5 weeks on and I'm down a good 10-12 pounds. They even stuffed in a couple of feet of stent, so it is actually more than that. Diet/appetite is back where it was, but I'm not overeating, so I think I can keep it off. |
