It was. Turbo and transmission were the next upgrades on the list. However, after I built the motor last spring I started to think about what Minnesota winters were doing to my WRX. The swap to a larger turbo (20G XTR or something similar) + 6 speed (04' STI or alt option with supporting mods.. axels, hubs, brakes, diff) would run me similar to what a clean NA can be found for, maybe more. Watching my cousin build his 92' NA for 14 years had me set on a NA for a project car. The idea was to keep the WRX as a DD (and track car until the NA was up to speed) and pick up an NA. However, with a small child in the picture my NA bank account did not grow as large as I wanted it to. With my cousin swapping his NA to a turbo LS setup his whole car would need to be parted out to make way for the LS swap. He is a tech by profession and his car is OCD clean. The parts and everything in that car was done correct and the best way possible. In my mind I wanted to mirror his setup. It wasn't until we got talking about his LS swap that I realized I could actually buy this setup because he had to part with most of it. So, this spring I put the WRX up for sale and crossed my fingers that I could pick up a solid DD and buy and NA + his car parts with the funds. Lucky for me the WRX sold right when a clean Miata with a solid base for mods came up for sale via one of my friends who races.

Now waiting for him to get married in Aug so we can start my swap and his LS swap this fall!

Very cool. Good timing.
I love my GR but its just not anything like my NB. Having both is bliss

I love leggies too, but the ones around here all seem to have so many weird oddball issues, its so weird.

took a field trip to the track with the wrx wagon I built and tuned, and that white 11 wrx I tuned.

The wagon guy was first time out at a track in his life, so as expected he couldn't drive to save his life :giggle: it was truly sad.

The car, however, was quick:
This is in 100* heat, with terrible driving. I think its got low 11's in it maybe even high 10's with that trap speed.

The white 11 wrx guy did better, consistently in the 12's with a slipping clutch, trapping 111mph. More pics/videos later.

Yeah, but that would require someone to like, do something. How often does that actually happen around here? :giggle:

Wagon is bauce, a sleeper for sure. Good jorb!

Thought I'd share a few pictures of a guy in our SCCA region that autocrosses a heavily modified gc8, some of you may have seen it at nationals . I'd looked at getting a 2.5RS instead of a miata, and still would like to own one, so I've been a bit jealous of his car. lol. Motor is a built Ver7 JDM STi Spec-c Type-RA, making somewhere north of 380whp. Car sits on 315 hoosier A6s.

That looks serious. Very very nice

Schuyler Jul 14, 2014 11:19 AM

I've ridden along with him a few times, it's a pretty intense experience. lol.

Here's a video or two.

First event after he did after some major repairs that had him down for a while, he missed a gate, and did a fucking HUGE power slide. There was a line of people waiting to do ridealongs after he finished his pro runs. lol.

The PO of my LGT had some pretty crappy HIDs (HID Kit) installed in my car. One of the headlights was actually turning purple. So the DDM replacement kit came in the mail while I was out of town. Took some time and installed the new kit tonight. I was very happy with the DDM kits on my WRX. As well they always had great customer service if a part failed. Can't beat that lifetime warranty. $3 postage to ship them the broken part and they ship back a replacement for free.

Top was the old kit, the other side of the ballast was really rusted.
Bottom is the DDM kit.

The PO did not seal his dust cap and rubber grommet. So I am debating baking the headlights and cleaning them out later this summer/fall. They are nice headlights (modified from OEM) and I hate that they have a slight film on the inside.

I hate that this Subaru is keeping me from working on my Miata... :vash: ... If it doesn't shape up soon I am burning it to the ground.

So Wednesday night I ended up getting some horrible misfires coming back from picking up some food. Pulled over and cylinder #3 was throwing misfire CELs and running a roughness of mid-20's on the AccessPort. I cleared the codes and limped it the 1/2 mile home.

Last night...

I started on the passenger side because I was getting a misfire on cylinder #1, and had 2 or 3 misfires on cylinder #3 for the 2k miles that I have owned this car. I pulled the silinoid above the injectors, it fell apart.

So I picked up a new one from my buddies shop (NF Performance). Then I pulled the coil packs to see what condition they were in, and they were toasted. I should have taken a picture, the metal on them was falling off in my hands. I flipped 1 to 3 and started the car to weed out the coil pack going bad. There was no roughness on the AccessPort for cylinder 1 or 3 (engine still cold?) but cylinder #2 was reading 100. I believe cylinder #2 was gone on Wednesday night, but I was throwing CELs on cylinder #3 so for some reason I only checked the roughness on cylinder 3 with the AccessPort when I was driving. So I pulled the coil packs from #2 and #4 and they also looked toasted. I swapped the coil packs for #2 and #4 and started the car. The roughness moved to cylinder #4. So today I am going to pick up 4 new coil packs and 4 new spark plugs. I hope this will fix everything,

I couldn't get up the driveway and into the garage yesterday so I had to get crafty with my lighting.

Picked up new coil packs from Subaru on Friday. Picked up some new NGK plugs from NAPA. As you can see they were toasted.

Cylinders #2 and #4

As you can see the spark plugs looked trashed. When #1 cracked it really got me worried. #3 came out fine, but #2 and #4 were seized or over torqued. They were in there good, they got pretty busted coming out, but I got them out.

Yeah that is what led me to selling my built 09 wrx. Minnesota winters eat cars! I am glad I have my rust free Miata to work on as a project. It is in the garage and only comes out to play in the sun. The LGT will slowly be killed by cancer (rust) so the Miata can live on.

Welcome to my world. That's clean compared to what I normally have to deal with. One reason that I am starting to hate working on cars.
