Yeah, I thought Motorcraft would be mandatory, but the guy was like:
"you can use whatever you want, as long as it's for gasoline engines and correct viscosity"
-"....really?"
-"yup, no big deal. just save your receipts for proof of oil changes"
-"........welp, that's cool, thanks"

at the Subaru dealership, the convo woulda went like this:
-"Can I use a different oil?"
-"OMG YOUR WARRANTY IS VOID JUST FOR SAYING THAT, AND WE'RE GONNA MURDER YOUR FAMIRY!!111"

:D

ON A RELATED NOTE, I did a thing yesterday

Why would you guys think that? Have you never heard of the Moss-Magnuson act?

Subaru didn't even bat an eye when I had them switch the entire car over to Motul synthetic.

18psi 08-03-2016 12:31 PM

That's cool, let me know what happens if you ever bring the car in to them with a spun bearing.
No one bat's an eye until there is a replacement engine claim on the line.

That looks like a shitheap. y u do dat

I guess. It's an unusual situation. Long story:

My brother has basically the same car, '05 LGT 5mt. We both get the letter from subaru say 6 months ago? he calls up local dealer gets added to list. Typical me I procrastinate and call a few months later. Lady says I have to come in for a multipoint inspection to get added to the list. I say that's unusual, talk to 2 other reps there who say it's normal. No charge inspection, they run thru to see what else needs done (rear brake line TSB, etc), and I'll get added to the list. I even call SOA and that lady confirms I shouldn't have to go in. Anyway, I bring the car in for a 45min checkup and they add me to the list (Say my 3 week old rear brake pads need replacing ASAP, that tells you the type of place I'm dealing with). They call me a month ago saying the airbag is in. I've been dodging them since, because I don't feel like removing my gauges.

My brother has never had a call back. :dunno:

hi_im_sean 08-03-2016 01:36 PM

I got my notice 6 months ago. Called, said I was added to the list and would be contacted when the part came in. 6 months ago. I should start becoming a PITA. Its kind of nice being able to use my 4 seater as a 4 seater. I hate having to drive that fuking jetta when we do the family thing. Anyone want to buy a jetta?

No, I'll be out of this car before the FA20 can blow up on me.

why are you worried about the gauges?

good strategy.
Yeah it's basically a roll of the dice when it comes to Subaru. I've seen many people get their claims denied from silly stuff like this, so I wouldn't put it past them.

Would you trust a dealer tech to remove and reinstall gauges? I trust them to use a pair of diagonals to cut the hose and wires.

The entire dash has to come out of the car to get to the passenger airbag. Gauges are in the cubby in the center of the dash.

18psi 08-04-2016 09:15 AM

Oh wow didn't realize the lgt/obxt needed the whole dash pulled. Yeah, I'd not trust them to do that right.

It's funny they're doing a recall on cars 10+ years old, basically saying that you've been driving with a serious, life threatening issue for 10 years.

Yeah, it's looking more and more like I'll move in with the girlfriend sometime in the next 3-6 months which means I'll go from a ~40 mile roundtrip commute to about 100 per day. And I have absolutely no desire to put down that kind of mileage in the BRZ.

JasonC SBB 08-09-2016 11:08 AM

OK Subaru pukes.

I might buy an EVO X in great shape but which has a mystery flash which causes overboosting and limp mode. I need to bring the flash back to stock to pass CA smog.
Turns out Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 works on the EVO X.

Is it just a matter of buying a Tactrix OpenPort 2.0 and flashing in the factory tune?
Is the factory tune file just floating around? Is there a website where people post tunes?
Can I save the tune that's in the car for me to examine and play with later?

Cheers.

18psi 08-09-2016 11:11 AM

Yes, if its not locked tune from cobb.
Yes, google it.
Yes, see #1

JasonC SBB 08-09-2016 12:17 PM

So if it's a locked Cobb tune I can't replace it with a factory tune?
What then?

18psi 08-09-2016 12:25 PM

if it's locked by cobb, then you borrow someone's cobb, marry it, unmarry it, and it gets unlocked.

evo's are among the most abused, molested, and potentially hacked cars out there, be careful and make sure to really inspect that bad boy.

there's a local guy that buys and sells a ton of them, he basically keeps me on retainer to come over, find the billion mods and hacks on them, tell him what to revert back to stock, and reflash cars back to stock for him. 9 out of 10 have been modded by idiots.

another fun factoid for ya: the stock tune and boost controller are 100% maxed out from the factory. you usually can't up the boost at all without replacing the dual solenoids (stupid setup too).

so I'd want to know why it's overboosting if the car is stock. even with a "tune"

JasonC SBB 08-09-2016 12:39 PM

OK the car is in my buddy's dealership in San Leandro. How many cases of beer and crates of kitty litter will you charge to help me with this car? :D

Thanks.

So after unlocking it with a borrowed Cobb, I still need the OpenPort 2.0 to flash in the factory tune?

18psi 08-09-2016 01:05 PM

I would, but too far. I'm in suckramental. if you're ever up here and want me to mess with it, shoot me a PM.
Actually it should revert to the default OEM map.
If you're not going to tune it, I guess you don't need the tactrix.

they're pretty limited on evoX's anyway, lots of hacks needed to the software as well as map to be able to actually log and tune the thing. its a huge pain
